Green Day’s first attempt at a political song in 2000. During President Bush’s administration they felt that Conservatism within the Republican Party was swinging into popularity and they wanted to be the minority. The lyrics where they say “Down with the moral majority” was a reference to televangelist Jerry Falwell and the Moral Majority an American political organization that he founded to advance conservative social values. They were not in agreement with n prayer in schools, banning abortion or pushing Christian right views. Their views may have been unpopular but they wanted to be the minority because that’s what they felt was right. |

I think this guy is in love with a really hot sexy high maintenance girl. Trying to understand her and what she wants is exhausting for him. Yet he can’t stop being attracted even though he’s weary about her and her drama and expensive tastes. She reels him in, but it isn’t clear if she cares much for him, because she’s all about the high life and partying. So because of that he tries to treat her as merely an option as well when he’s actually enthralled by her. He longs to understand her but eventually concedes he never will. |

I love that this song shows the vulnerability that men also feel about love and sex. It’s widely known that women feel this way, but it is reassuring to know that so do men. It perfectly shows the tough questions you should work out with your partner before or during your relationship to ensure they are on the same page as you so no one gets hurt if the other is not as serious about the relationship or committed to being with you long term. |

I think this song is definitely from the viewpoint of a lover who was an abusive, manipulative and probably malevolent force towards his lover. He viewed her as an innocent angel originally implying that he pulled off her wings and laughed as he took joy in creating her pain. However that pain and sullied influence he introduced to her (whether drugs, sex, violence or all of the above) transformed her into something else. He now likens her to a common fly come to feast on scraps and pestilence and that now loves this version of herself to his horror. She would easily blow him away and it even seems like he longs for it due to the guilt he feels after tormenting and transmuting her from what she used to be. |

@[coold00d:43555] I would add that many of their songs can easily talk about power dynamics in every other major country in the world as well though and not just the U.S. The title of this album “Evil Empire” is based off of Ronald Reagan’s description of Russia. This song’s context could easily also be applied to China, Russia, Germany during WWII, and other major world powers as this tactic is generally used by anyone in power to stay in power. |

I was just telling my husband to at when I was in high school and first heard this song I experienced it from the perspective of a parent consoling a child who had awoken from a dream or nightmare. Once I was older I understood it as lucid dreaming. Only recently did I listen to this song and hear this new “dimension” to the lyrics. I absolutely think it’s meant to be this way. I even feel like you could listen to the first verse thinking of a child and parent, the second verse and think of learning to lucid dream while also mastering manifestation in the reality as well, then the final verse brings to mind angels watching over us or the collective unconsciousness of other beings, loved ones and ancestors guiding us through the process of life and especially death (or the reconnection to our real lives). I’m glad it resonated this way with others as well and was pleased to see your interpretation. |

My interpretation of this song is someone who has been in a relationship with someone who is smothering and badly wants their relationship to be their forever relationship, but the singer apathetically disagrees. The singer feels blamed and judged by the other person and like they’ve always made them out to be the bad guy passive aggressively. They’re finally sick and tired of it. They just want their freedom back and for the other person to wake up and realize that things weren’t working out between them and to stop forcing it. The singer is indifferently mocking them “No time to search the world around, cause you know where I’ll be found when I come around”. But they aren’t going to come around, and they don’t want to be blamed anymore. So they’re telling the other person to go out and find what they’re really looking for, and to do it wisely, so they don’t end up making themselves out to be a martyr/victim again in another relationship that’s just not working either. They’re detached and no longer care what they say about them anymore. |

I think this song is about someone who is truly perpetually living in their “id” from Sigmund Freud’s theory of the human psyche. They use drugs, alcohol, sex, or whatever they want for their own pleasure with no regard to how it affects others. I also think the person described in the song has strong narcissistic tendencies as well. They willfully build up others to enjoy tearing them down. They chew through the centers of people and then leave them destroyed. They use all the tools of manipulation to achieve this by pleading to be trusted until it turns into them commanding to be trusted and no longer asking. They are abusive and vindictive and underneath it they are most likely riddled with pain of their own that they’ve been unable to communicate for a very long time. However they are unable to rise above it, so rather they perpetuate it, and continue the cycle by breaking others as they see fit. So I think it goes right in line with the other behaviors described in the same album Undertow like the song Prison Sex.
For those unfamiliar with it, the id is the disorganized part of the personality structure that contains a human's basic, instinctual drives. Id is the only component of personality that is present from birth. It is the source of a person's bodily needs, wants, desires, and impulses, particularly their sexual and aggressive drives. The id contains the libido, which is the primary source of instinctual force that is unresponsive to the demands of reality. The id acts according to the "pleasure principle"—the psychic force that motivates the tendency to seek immediate gratification of any impulse—defined as seeking to avoid pain or unpleasure (not "displeasure") aroused by increases in instinctual tension. According to Freud the id is unconscious by definition.
Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others. Narcissism is a concept in psychoanalytic theory, which was popularly introduced in Sigmund Freud's essay On Narcissism (1914). The American Psychiatric Association has listed the classification narcissistic personality disorder in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) since 1968, drawing on the historical concept of megalomania. |

I think this guy is in a difunctional relationship with a very confused girl who is taking advantage of him. She has low self-esteem and seeks attention from other men to make her feel better. She has no real respect or appreciation for this guy's love for her, and what's worse is he has low self-esteem and is allowing her to do this to him. This is a scenario so many of us know well because we've all been here at one point or another, either as the one taking advantage of someone who loves us that we don't love the same or as the one who is allowing themselves to be disrespected and taken advantage of. I think it's all a part of growing up in our relationships. |

I would say my husband and I did this when we first got together though, so I would say it did finally work in the end but we both at least knew that the other was smitten and so were we. That was the difference. Sometimes love can be complicated and holding the line during the rough patches has worked out so far. Only time will tell if it will continue to. I do love this song and it's honesty. |

Any other martyrs who stand on soapboxes pointing fingers in the world after the Crucifixion of Christ claiming to be better or know better than everyone else especially if they fail to speak from the heart with humility as Jesus did, had better be prepared to put their money where their mouth is and make a similar sacrifice to the public they want to believe them. He's mocking them using Jesus as an ideal or example to hold them up against, not mocking Jesus himself.
@[Cani687:29845] if really doesn't make sense to be about Jesus himself. Jesus knew He would die for our sins, prophesied it even. He was meant to do it and when the time came welcomed it knowingly. These specific lyrics I think show he's talking about someone who wants to be a martyr but falls short of Jesus's example:
"Not all martyrs see divinity but at least you tried" (Jesus saw divinity)
"Ranting and pointing his finger at everything but his heart" (Jesus did speak from the heart)
"Get off your fucking cross. We need the fucking space to nail the next fool martyr" (Jesus sadly didn't get off his cross, but people who martyr themselves pontify to the public putting themselves up on a cross. He's mocking them for not seeing their own public demise coming.)
So he's not mocking Jesus, rather using His example as an ideal to hold televangelists, politicians, public figures, to mockingly. Many of Tool's songs and themes are about calling out blatant and insidious hypocrisy. |

It's possible for someone to cheat, then regret it, and try to apologize and beg them not to leave and really realize the magnitude of the situation they created, especially when you take the original song by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons into account. That is most definitely what I feel this song is about. I think some of the lyrics aren't written here properly for the Madcon version as well, particularly this verse:
An empty shell I used to be (meaning he was hollow and heartless to her)
Shadow of my life was hangin' over me (he's living with the things he's done)
A broken man that I don't know (he doesn't even recognize himself anymore)

Politics and other shady business deals in general for sure where power grabs are made at the demise of others in order to try to win and assert dominance. They also mention Buddy Rich who was a Jazz musician who had a notoriously short temper and that was also from the same time period as Watergate, so there's most definitely a connection to all of that. |

She's telling the story about how her brother was wrongfully convicted of a murder he did not commit. Her brother met up with his best friend Andy at the bar where his friend confessed that while he's been gone his new wife has been cheating on him with more than one person including himself. He's obviously upset and goes home but his wife is gone and found his gun and went through the woods to Andy's house to kill him. However when he got there he found Andy already dead with much smaller footprints than his leading to the house. He tried to flag down the cop to report the crime, but the cop immediately blames him instead out of convenience. The judge agrees and they quickly send him to death before she can come forward and confess that she is in fact the killer. I always thought the motive wasn't just that Andy was sleeping with her brother's wife but that she herself was in love with Andy and they were having a relationship too and that it was a double motive crime of passion. |

I never said anything about someone being entitled to making someone their toy, just that she will get fed up and leave, as she should. AKA they are not compatible. It is possible for someone to have cared and tried to do everything in their power to help someone else and they just have a different idea of how they wanna do things and not be compatible and yet BOTH people were good people that sadly just weren't right together. I had three serious relationships like this before I met my husband. They were good guys, but just not going the same direction as me. I don't hate them for it, and I still wish them love and happiness, if anything I'm just sad about the time wasted trying to make something work that didn't. In the end though, even those thins come full circle and bring us to the people and places we are meant to be. |

@[Tricepts:27945] sure that may be lots of girls out there...but I don't get the feeling at all by the lyrics that he was talking about just ANY girl here. He was talking about one who was very successful and surely gonna make something very special and profound with her life, and he full well knew it. She had ideas of how to help him too. She din't want to just help and change him, she wielded the power to change the world. That's not just some average chick who thinks she knows everything. I loved Chris Cornell, he was an ultimate talent and poet. But even he with all of his success may have very well had missed opportunities with movers and shakers. You're free to see it through your own eyes, as am I. What I envision is a woman who would go on to work for Greenpeace or Amnesties and really change things literally in the world, but try as she might, she just couldn't succeed at changing them. Obviously that means they weren't compatible, but I think this is his forlorn view for unrequited love because it was still sad to part with someone so special that was destined to do great things and not have felt good enough. I imagine he also dated plenty of women who felt the same about him because he went on to rock stardom and they were just Jan working at Starbucks or something...lol. |

I actually take it a little further even to say that the individual while on the drugs/alcohol is this way themselves. They become another person because of their addiction and they are saying "I am a worthless liar. I will find a center in you. I will chew it up and leave. I will work to elevate you, Just enough to bring you down." Because they bring others down who try to save them or help often stealing etc. in the process. |
