We humans tend to search for things that we think will make us happy but we don't always realize that we may already have what we need. The lyricist gave us two metaphors involving the Tin Man and Sir Galahad. The Tin Man searched for a heart because he thought he needed it to love. Sir Galahad searched far and wide for the Holy Grail because he thought it would make him whole and resolve ancient spiritual questions. However, in the Wizard of Oz, the Tin Man was clearly already the most sensitive and caring person in the story with the possible exception of Dorothy. Being already so caring and sensitive, he did not need a heart to feel love. Sir Galahad is described in the legends of King Arthur as being the bravest, wisest and most worthy knight of King Arthur's round table. Clearly, Sir Galahad is already a whole person but perhaps he needs external validation and his search for the Holy Grail is a way of obtaining this. So as the conch shell contains no real audible information, the heart is not necessary to feel love and a search for the Holy Grail is not necessary to be a whole person unless we believe it so. In some versions of the Wizard of Oz, the Tin Man received his heart but he was warned that his new heart might break when he falls in love. In some Arthurian legends, Sir Galahad is allowed to find the Holy Grail but he dies shortly thereafter. So "Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man That he didn't, didn't already have And Cause never was the reason for the evening Or the tropic (read "travels") of Sir Galahad". A deeper processing of these consequences could easily lead to some confusion and perhaps a psychedelic hallucination. "So please Believe in me When I say I'm spinning round, round, round, round Smoke glass stain'd bright colors Image going down, down, down, down Soapsud green like bubbles" But all of this could be avoided if we realize that we don't need a lot of the external validations of this world. We can simply believe in ourselves or have faith in God. |

I am very suspicious of the song "A Horse with No Name" because I have known family members and friends who owned horses. One of the first things they did after buying a horse was to name the horse. Cowboys and racehorse owners famously named their horses and their horses were like members of their families. For a horse to have no name it would mean that you never wanted to call the horse and you never wanted other people to be aware of the existence of the horse. Further, you never want people to know that the horse belongs to you. Metaphorically, a horse can provide transportation, i.e., take you on a trip, keep you company and provide an escape from the pain of your reality. That escape could be for up to nine days before you let the nameless horse run free. That's when you come down from the high and take a fresh look around to see the plants and birds and rocks and things. |

| We have all probably been a tin man or tin woman at some point. The song writer expresses this frustration beautifully even though the lyrics are a bit cryptic. | |

"Sometimes late when things are real and people share the gift of gab between themselves." "Some are quick to take the bait and catch the perfect prize that waits among the shells. Sometimes late at night when people have nothing better to do, they congregate at parties, clubs and social scenes. Many people enjoy talking and many of them talk even then they have nothing particularly relevant or interesting to say. They just want to try to fit in with the social scene. They feel important when others listen to them. These people are interposers and social opportunists. This is a shell game because what the interposer has to say may be relevant and interesting to the others and they could be encouraged to continue, i.e., "catch the perfect prize among the shells". Or, probably more likely, the interposer fails to entertain and is deemed irrelevant to the established socialites and intellectuals. "But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man that he didn't, didn't already have." The interposer, or "Tin Man", is seeking to be made whole through social acceptance in situations where he or she may not belong. But the other people may also be tin men in their own right. Although they seem socially connected, they each have their own deficiencies, fears self doubts. It is impossible for these people to give the Tin Man what he really needs, that being self confidence to go out and make his own mark. "And Cause never was the reason for the evening or the tropic of Sir Galahad." The interposer or Tin Man should realize that he is in this place by choice and he could easily wake up and realize that he would be better off somewhere else. Other people's opinions are not as important as his own opinion of himself. Everyone won't fit in every place. It is up to each of us to find where we belong. The the problem of social acceptance will be solved. "So please believe in me when I say I'm spinning round, round, round, round..." Note to self: although I'm trying hard to fit in here, I really don't think that this is working out for me. Believe me when I say that I'm really confused about what my next move should be. I feel like I'm spinning out of control, wasting my time and I'm not thinking clearly. In my heart, I know that I'm going in the wrong direction but I really need to work on my self confidence and perhaps I need to pray for direction and purpose. I'm going to work hard to figure this out so I can do better. I owe myself that much. I'm going to make a conscious decision to believe in myself from now on. |
