The Blakes – Commit Lyrics 12 years ago
The last line of the first verse is actually, "Why should I, when you just *don't shut up*?"

I think the line in the second verse is really, "I hear those girls, they *sure are nice*/ Up on the hill, they *drink* and dance all night,"

Third verse is, "*It's like* these words aren't comin' out right," This missing line of the third verse is, "I guess I'll walk alone, *walk it off, just go home tonight*,"

The missing lines at the end are, "I hear those girls, they sure are nice/up on the hill, they drink and dance all night/sounds fine to me tonight, sounds fine to me tonight, sounds fine to me tonight, tonight, tonight,"

Weezer – My Name Is Jonas Lyrics 12 years ago
Rivers Cuomo has gone record saying the song is about his brother, Leaves Cuomo, who was in a car accident and was having trouble with insurance. The song is a narrative that serves as an incredibly dramatic metaphor for Leaves' situation and is supposed to be representative of people who have experienced similar situations, in which they are always getting reamed by the Man, whether it be insurance, or corporate, or Social Security, whatever. In the song, the Jonas character represents the insurance company and Wepeel represents Leaves Cuomo, while the brother is clearly Rivers Cuomo.
The lines about construction aren't metaphorical, they're literal. Basically, it's about a man who has a job doing labor and he relies heavily on this job, not just to support himself but to keep his mind and body active. Perhaps he decided to not pursue an education after high school or his degree has not afforded many white collar opportunities. Either way, he is working at a job site and suddenly, he no longer has this job for whatever reason. It's like he didn't even matter, he's totally replaceable, nobody appreciated him, nobody is going to make it up to him, nobody is going to help him, it's just 'let's cut ties here and now'. They give him a paltry consolation prize for his trouble or some insincere meant-to-be-comforting-but-really-isn't parting words.
The entire first verse is from the point of view of the person telling the employee he no longer has a job. The song isn't ABOUT Jonas, it's being said BY Jonas, who is actually the bad guy, the boss or work foreman ("Thanks for all you've shown us, but this is how we feel, come sit next to me, pour yourself some tea...")
Now the question is why does Weepel, presumably the man who was let go by Jonas, no longer have a job? It could be for many number of reasons. Maybe the job was shut down early and now there's no real payoff, the company is not providing for jobs lost. This meaning explains the line, "The workers are going home." But also incredibly likely, he was injured on the job or involved in a human resources situation and he was forced into retirement. His severance package or security from the government is probably paltry, which means the system that Cuomo is talking about has a dual meaning: the system, as in corporate or union, and the system, as in the government that is failing to provide for Wepeel.
Not only is this situation bad on a financial level, but it's bad on an emotional and mental level. Wepeel put all this time and energy and effort into this job and was treated poorly; now he has nothing to give him self-esteem or occupy his time or mind. This is confirmed by the lines "the ticket costs only your mind" and "I got a box full of your toys, they're fresh out of batteries but they're still making noise." He's saying, "This job gave me all of these issues and now the job is gone, but I'm still dealing with these problems. Who is going to help me care of this?" Everything in his life is subsequently going to pieces ("Now this tank is dry and this wheel is flat".)
To kill his self-esteem more ("And you know what else?"), Wepeel's little brother is calling out of concern. The little brother, a representation of Rivers Cuomo, is successful, much like rock star Rivers Cuomo. How does that feel, to lose your job and ability to work and to be ignored by the people who are supposed to help you, and then your *little* brother is this big success and is trying to help you, undermining your status as elder brother and accidentally rubbing his good fortune in your face? In real life, Leaves may or may not be older than Rivers, but the 'little brother' description is added to basically add insult to injury, to make Wepeel's situation even worse.
The last lines are Jonas' words. They could be his excuses to Wepeel about why he is discontinuing the project and letting Weepel and his coworkers go. Or these lines are a snippet of a conversation he is having with whomever, possibly his own superior, complaining about how the project is plagued with many problems. or excuses why the job is taking longer than it should; in this case, the foreman that has injured his hand is Weepel himself. If it is the latter, the hand injury would explain why Wepeel was let go. In this list, Wepeel is simply 'the foreman', just a faceless worker who is a problem is a long lsit of other problems, and we get a sense of just how unimportant he is to Jonas overall.

VETTE – Radio Lyrics 12 years ago
The meaning of this song is fairly simple enough. Probably autobiographical, since VETTE is LA-based, A Cali girl loves the radio and someday wants to hear her own songs on the radio, possibly this song itself. 'Radio' *is* very well-produced, simplistic, and catchy, and would have been incredibly radio-friendly, say, ten or so years ago, during that wave of California pop-rock. I could imagine hearing this on the FM very well anywhere from 1997 to 2002, between Sugar Ray and Smash Mouth.

Notes: 'PCH' is 'Pacific Coast Highway' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_State_Route_1#Orange_County) and is mentioned by many bands in their music, including Courtney Love (http://www.songmeanings.net/artist/view/songs/137438960671/) and Hole (http://www.songmeanings.net/artist/view/songs/1244/), the Ataris (http://www.songmeanings.net/artist/view/songs/337/), Shwayze (http://www.songmeanings.net/artist/view/songs/137438978722/), and Tom Petty (http://www.songmeanings.net/artist/view/songs/501/).

Mr. Little Jeans – Rescue Song (RAC Remix) Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is about a couple who likes to take care of each other; it's a pretty basic need. The woman is perfectly capable of protecting herself ("got a gun and an eagle's eye") but that doesn't necessarily mean she doesn't want to be taken care of and protected by someone else every once and a while ("but would like somewhere safe to hide"); however, she still has to prove that she is not weak in her own right. When the song begins, it's actually the aftermath of an event: the boy has physically rescued her from an attack ("my dress is torn, you have a black eye.") They go back to his place and she sees that his "sofa is old" and his "room is cold", thus symbolizing that he leads a sad and lonely life. He's has just rescued her, so she owes him one; she will help the boy emotionally by bringing "heat" to the cold (lonely) apartment and "new" (hope) to the old sofa. She will "rescue" the boy emotionally to repay him for his literal rescue; their relationship will be mutually beneficial ("you've a reason and so have I, it's true".)

The Strokes – Barely Legal Lyrics 12 years ago
I know *exactly* what this song is about. I relate to it completely. My first sexual relationship, I was 17 and the man (well, really a boy) was 22. We pretended to just be good acquaintances("We made pretend we were best friends") and our parents were neighbors and had a close friendship, which made it easy to 'run into each other'. He had a ton of problems, he smoked way too much weed and he dropped out of college and worked menial jobs and just couldn't get his shit together.("I didn't take no shortcuts/I spent the money that I saved up/Aw mama runnin' out of luck/Well like my sister don't give a fuck/I wanna steal your innocence/To me my life it don't make sense".) He liked me but also didn't like me, he had no idea why, I realized later, and wouldn't turn anything into a real relationship, I also sadly realized later. ("I just want to turn you down/I just want to turn you around/You ain't never had nothing I wanted/But I want it all I just can't figure out nothin'.")His inability to commit or to have solid feelings for me was because a)we truly weren't compatible (it was really the allure of the forbidden for both of us, my parents totally hated his guts and I was just a young catholic school girl) and b)both of our lack of maturity. That whole lien, 'I never show up on week days/That's something that you learned yesterday', resonates with me the most because I knew he was a bad idea, but I pursued him anyway, and I knew when he was going to show up at neighborhood barbecues. I would wear deliberately provocative clothing. He would run into me at events and sit next to me. We would meet up at the park. He would always drop me off right in front of my house at suspicious times and he did NOT care if I was going to be in trouble ("Drive you to work and you will be on time/These little problems they're not yours they're mine.") He was occasionally cold and unfeeling but would open up to me, make me feel sorry for him, so that I was more attracted to him ("Come on listen to what I say/I have some secrets that will make you stay.") When our parents found out, the shit hit the fan and we just turned on each other, blaming each other. I realized how pathetic he was, that I could do better, I felt guilty because it was partially my fault, but I also thrust a lot of blame on him, because I was young and he was the adult (And then she said Oh you're a freak/They ordered me to make mistakes.") It was a mistake for both of us and and it was just as much my fault, maybe more so, but sometimes, I still really really hate him.

Lana Del Rey – Video Games Lyrics 12 years ago
Lana Del Rey, as quoted, when asked bout 'Video Games': "A boy. I think we came together because we were both outsiders. It was perfect. But I think with that contentment also comes sadness. There was something heavenly about that life — we'd go to work and he'd play his video games - but also it was maybe too regular. At the time I was becoming disillusioned with being a singer and was very happy to settle with a boyfriend who I loved, but in the end we both lost sight of our dreams. Maybe there's something not-so-special about domestic life." (http://thequietus.com/articles/07106-lana-del-rey-interview)

So the song is both happy and sad, a doomed love story that has good memories nonetheless.

(On a side note, this song reminds me of a million ex-boyfriends who would ask me to come over in the evenings after we got home from work or class. I would change out of my day clothes, put on some amazing underwear, try out a new scent, do my hair, pick out an outfit that said casual but sexy, and then drive over to his place only to find him (or him, or him, or him, or the other him, sitting on the couch, playing on PS-whogivesafuck. Men want to play video games for 2-5 hours. Most aren't so brazen to just outright do this, but if I had to guess, this is the ideal situation for like ninety percent of men under the age of thirty-five.

Inspiral Carpets – Saturn 5 Lyrics 12 years ago
The song recalls a memory; it was fairly popular for families to gather around their televisions to watch launches; it would basically blow their minds. It's also about the wonder and hope of the 60's, particularly in regards to the space program and technology.

Saturn V (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturn_V) was a rocket used in a series of space programs in the late 60's. The awe and wonder described when watching a space mission, glorious to the song's narrator even on a "monochromatic" television (black and white), is juxtaposed with the tragedy of the Kennedy assassination in 1963. Kennedy ("President 35") lobbied to increase the NASA budget during his presidency and was successful but unfortunately didn't live to see the results, such as US victory in the Space Race and, of course, the eponymous Saturn V. The song insinuates that Kennedy's death incites as much awe as Saturn V in action. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline ("the lady crying by his side is the most beautiful woman alive") were famed for their youth, vigor, and photogenic good looks; the tragedy is not only shocking and horrible, but also full of beauty (in a sad, horrific way, of course.)

Eagle-Eye Cherry – Save Tonight Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is very cute, but did anyone ever find it incredibly insincere? The meaning is supposedly bittersweet, but it's still very upbeat and the lyrics are sort of trite. I wonder, if instead of the basic story of a man leaving his girl behind for what ever reason and he wants to make his final night as special as possible, it's about a womanizer? A guy drifts through town, picks up a girl, feeds her some sweet lines to make her feel special, gets her a little tipsy, and has a one night stand; does he really *have* to leave tomorrow or is this just what the guy does? 'There's a log on the fire and it burns like me for you' is a bit corny and sounds a little like a pick up line. His wishing to stay but can't may be an excuse to just leave this tryst as a hit it and quit it. It reminds me of a friend I have in the army who seems to pick up an incredibly devoted girlfriend wherever he's stationed and then just sort of dumps her when he leaves rather than keep in touch, not just because that's the way it has to be, but because he mostly doesn't care, it's time to move on to next one.

Third Eye Blind – Eye Conqueror Lyrics 12 years ago
The song to me is clearly about sex. It's a metaphor comparing a knight rescuing a damsel to a man competing for the attention of a woman and succeeding in bedding her. Not only has the protagonist of the song beat out other men to sleep with this girl, but he has also (hopefully) provided a satisfying sexual experience for the both of them.

'In the matrix of your garden, I find you in bloom', might just be reference to her beauty or beautiful spirit, but words like 'garden' and 'bloom' are not uncommon words associated with a woman's private parts. This is confirmed when the lyrics become 'In the matrix of your garden, I beg your pardon, now that I've hardened', 'hardened' clearly referring to his penis. He later says he's 'coming' for her, which is self-explanatory. 'I taste your scent in the wind' may refer to either kissing or cunnilingus, probably the latter, because this guy is obsessed with satisfying this woman completely. Also, the vagina is often called a 'pink eye' and he is the 'eye conqueror'.
