The Shins – Red Rabbits Lyrics 9 years ago
Being poetry played to rhythm and melody, good music has roots not only in good sound, but also in great lyrics. In this regard, I was extremely impressed with The Shins' poetry. It's also a bit infuriating because good poetry is extremely difficult to interpret, so I'm never really sure what I'm singing about when I'm singing along to this band >.< Since most of this song's meaning is obfuscated, I'll start with the verse that is least poetic (addresses the audience):

"you came to my sweet shore to indulge [your thirst]... but there was not enough [and there still is not enough]". Mercer is the shore and the water. The audience is someone born in a desert that needed more of Mercer than Mercer had to give. The first line now tells us the context; "hurled to [the desert] again".

The metaphor of shore/water vs. desert/heat provides the song's general meaning, but doesn't provide details. The remaining major metaphors are the forest with sprites (and thorns), the corpse balloon, the melted red rabbits, and the eyes (sunburnt vs. wan). Perhaps the remainder may be solved by looking once again for the most direct lines about each respective metaphor? Perhaps Mercer also used these metaphors in another song on the album?

The Police – Wrapped Around Your Finger Lyrics 10 years ago
Projecting? A fair enough interpretation, and a very personal meaning, but I don't believe it is what The Police were singing about. I admire that you shared what the song means to you, and I think you'd do better writing your own music and eventually being famous, instead of commenting on someone else' music and being a fool for not 'understanding' it 'properly'.

Write a song about a player, figure out how to sing and play guitar, and you're set to tell your stories and share your experiences :)

Johnny Cash – Hurt (Nine Inch Nails cover) Lyrics 10 years ago
It was originally written by Trent Reznor and performed by his group Nine Inch Nails. It is absolutely about self-harm and drug abuse, especially with the empty dissonant sound of the original.

In JC's version, he brings a different interpretation; an old man defeated by time getting by with medicine (or drugs) and contemplating the loss of his friends and his legacy. The steady tone of inner strength and defeat, and the video containing clips of Johnny's life make it a perfect end to the legacy of one of the greats. In fact, the video was made 3 months before Johnny's wife died and 7 before he himself followed.

Part of understanding the song is understanding the person and the moments in their life. Trent wrote the message you picked up on, while Johnny sang a very different message with the same words.

The Proclaimers – I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) Lyrics 11 years ago
Personally, I get the sense that they're singing about being the man in someone else's life. It doesn't seem like an over-the-top song about catching grenades or anything. It's just a song about being perfectly happy to share life with someone else.

Bruce Springsteen – Radio Nowhere Lyrics 11 years ago
I think the major portion of this song is just talking about how hard it is to find music that 'speaks'. Most of it lacks meaning and feeling, especially with regards to instruments. Music should make you feel emotion, rather than be a meaningless drone on the edge of your hearing. I find that a lot of music fades into the background and only some of it manages to engage me.

Boston – Peace of Mind Lyrics 11 years ago
The only thing I can say is a question. Would you prefer to live in a way that you don't find fulfilling, or would you prefer to find your own way to make life fulfilling. I can't say yes or no, but it is a good question to ask about anything in life.

Boston – Peace of Mind Lyrics 11 years ago
I don't often listen to music from classic rock bands due to lack of exposure, but when I heard this song on the radio, it described exactly the idea I am struggling with. The oddest feeling is the knowledge that I am the only person I know thinking on such 'inconsequential' ideas, even though I see that I'm not the only one who's had these ideas. I guess it's a bit sad that life goes one and that no-one really has the answers.

Nonetheless, I am impressed with the quality of the lyrics as compared to many modern songs of the same genre. I guess I'm just a sucker for all the questions that few people care about.

>,< how many people fail to realize that glycerine is a preservative, much like petroleum jelly, that is often used for both medicines and keeping food fresh (also sweetens foods) not only that, glycerine is most commonly used for medicines that treat burns.

Tokio Hotel – strange Lyrics 12 years ago
It's about how by living in this world, you're forced to become what others want, or face the pain of being shunned by them, even though you only feel happy being yourself.
It also brushes upon the fact that love puts this kind of pressure onto the person who bears it, and the fact that because you love that person, you don't want them to feel that pressure.

It saddens me to see how many people have traded the pain and pleasure of being yourself, for the happiness of being a "normal" person who fits in.

Bush – Glycerine Lyrics 12 years ago
It's a great song though. One of my favourite verses, both in audio and lyrical execution is "We live in a wheel were everyone steals, but when we rise it's like strawberry fields"
I take that to mean that everyone steals from other people, but when you have everything, it matters very little if others take what they need.

these are the most accurate lyrics on the web that I've found... but "Bad moon, white again" is wrong. It should be "Bad mood, white again" It took me quite a bit of listening to get it right though >,<
