Blue Öyster Cult – Death Valley Nights Lyrics 12 years ago
I have never been sure that he was saying "before it's hangover time." I am 23 and BOC has been my favorite band since I was 4. Honestly. And this has been one of my favorite albums for over a decade. I have heard this song more times than I can ever remember, and I have never been able to figure out what he's saying there. But I TOTALLY agree with you in that most of their songs should have been huge on the radio. Everyone says Led Zeppelin was the best early heavy metal band, but BOC has more original material than almost ANY group or artist in ANY genre. (Frank Zappa has an entire vault of unreleased recordings.) They simply had horrible marketing strategies, and constantly refused to change little words in their lyrics here and there to comply with FCC. Plus, a staggering majority of their music is very dark, deep and contemplative. It almost always borderlines on Doom Cake Metal (like Type O Negative, another pioneer band that trancsends almost every time and genre), which was and remains to be, very contrary to what big-time radio stations see as something that can boost ratings. They seem to want music that while completely lacking in any intelligent substance whatsoever, has a catchy beat and makes people (I call them SHEEP) feel happy without having to think about why they are feeling happy. I don't know why a group of people that can be so VERY musically talented, genious even(!!), can be so ignorant or even lazy to the marketing aspect of music. Either they didn't know how to make their music popular, or they didn't care if it was popular or not. I'd like to think it was the latter. "Let the SHEEP have their top 40 lists and Tony Awards, we will have a base core of true, diehard fans that will span and transcend generations. We will have a CULT!!"
Anyway, I'm sorry, Ive been a dihard BOC fan my whole life, and have been completely isolated in my love for them. I have friends who will listen to them, and say "oh, thats cool, can we listen to Rammstein now?". They do not or will not stop for three seconds and let themselves delve into the seemingly infinite facets and layers to every peice of music in a BOC song. So, to see that there are people out there who Understand, really makes me feel like I'm not alone in this for the first time EVER!!(Besides being at a BOC show, Ive seentwo so far!!!)

Blue Öyster Cult – Flaming Telepaths Lyrics 12 years ago
I heard somewhere that this song is about mind control experimentation by secret Nazi Doctors/Scientists in WW2. (Hence the whole secret treaties theme) I have also been told that Astronomy is the sequel to this song, and has also to do somehow with gaining some kind of knowledge due to mind control experiments. But I also agree with the drug use refferences as well. I think it may not be about one or the other, but sort of both. Two meanings intertwined in one string of thought. But I've ALSO heard (sorry for length) that Secret Treaties (the idea of, at least) is based on some actual fact. That there really were secret transactions between Allied and Axis leaders, like Germany, Italy, UK and USA. I'm not sure how much water this holds, but I think whoever wrote this knew about that possibility.

Blue Öyster Cult – Still Burnin' Lyrics 12 years ago
Freud?
The penis and vagina envy guy?? I always thought it was 'lord have mercy', but I guess I was wrong. Although, I have seen other BOC lyrics on this site that were, though slightly, still a bit wrong. So one little word or syllable may seem insignificant, it can really change the whole meaning to a part or even the whole song. My point is, if it really is "Freud have mercy on my soul", then I think that's AWESOME!!!! But I am not sure it really is...

Blue Öyster Cult – Then Came The Last Days Of May Lyrics 12 years ago
woops i didnt realize i could reply to these. anyway, alot of the lyrics written up there^^ are not what is in the song. Unless the voices saying those extra words are even quiter than the ones saying "all there" and "what luck", i'm pretty sure that them lyrics ain't right. But this other dude has a point, the driver is presented as another character in the story, if it was him narrating it, he would have said "i said the...." Maybe it could be a friend of the three boys?? One who was left after it went wrong to find them or deduce what happened by himself? The way Bloom was talkin' about it when i saw them, made it sound like whoever wrote the lyrics (it seriously could have been one or more of more than 10 people)was the person who knew them. I dont know, sorry this is so long, i have been DYING to debate BOC lyrics with someone other than my father for years now, and all my stupid SHEEP friends won't stop for 15 seconds and actually hear them as anything more than a blurred background noise. So I'm pretty excited about this whole debate thing. Who would have thought, BOC NERD?? ha!

I think there a few too many words in these^^. Muldrake i never saw it that way until i read your comment just now, and it certainly fits. I just saw BOC in Oct. 2011, and the first time on halloween night in 2008!!(or 09?)!!! The guys playing with Eric Bloom & Buck Dharma are pretty good! Probably from touring with them for so long!!

Blue Öyster Cult – The Red And The Black Lyrics 12 years ago
I've always wondered what they were talking about in this song, besides the Mounties. There's obviously some nitty-gritty S&m stuff intertwined. I don't think it's just drug induced rambling. One of the best things about BOC is their incredibly precise, (while remaining) obscure lyrics. Everything always means something. My dad told me once that he and a friend used to write in to the official fanclub or people of the band, and they would mail back lyrics to songs they requested, and I assume some kind of explanation. Maybe we're all left to our own devices for deciphering them for a reason. Maybe it's all about coming to our own individual conclusions?
