Lytle always looked like an old young guy to me. The way he sounds, thinks, dresses.. some people just have that edge of youth for a lot longer, sometimes til the very end.
Its a very peaceful and vulnerable song. It sounds like slice-of-life stuff but also feeling very disoriented in that life. Its bright and beautiful and tear-jerking. What a subtle piece. |

I just found out that the lyrics to the song were originally a poem. its a laid-back song with that sort of non-chalant country style meaningfulness that sometimes flies under the radar.
I don't know for sure, you never do, but I spent some time not doing much. I drank for a bit, smoked for a few years, did a lot of pot, and just hung out. Its a little dark at times, but sometimes its real stretched and fun. This song sounds like when its good, with a splash to suggest the black spots and allusion to the meaninglessness of life. |

I dunno, sort of could relate to it very well as a bored teenager in the suburbs. I can't muster much interprestation except it sounds like stream-of-thought-loserish stuff maybe. Such vinegary word salad. |

I was in high school when I was really into Pulp and this was in the suburbs of Toronto and a good few years after their big boom. Partying full blast during the rave era when Brit pop was blowing up would have been pretty wild.
Anyhow, I always felt it was a mature song. Very melancholy and nostalgic, but obvously lovely. The video too.
Anyhow, love comes and goes and burns brightly and passes and then we have sad memories of happy times. The smell of leaf mould and the sweetness of decay. In the end, its just you and the trees. |

Oddly relate to this song. I was born in 86 and the older I get, the more I value those who lived in that sliver of time and space. A soft sentimental bunch! One of Ozma's best song - it has their signature sound and finally they transcended being Weezer's lil bro. Like most of their song, its about nostalgia and lost love. In this case, the dude runs off somewhere in an implied space opera. Great guitar solo too. |

Seems to just be a song looking at life from a rear view mirror as you drive on past the craziest parts. A difficult undertaking but done really well here. Some real gems in the lyrics too. The music and singing is really disarming and lovely too. Perhaps the Strokes song that really got me to think of them as a legit band that may stand the test of time. |

I think this song is actually about the time in Parry Gripp's life when Van Halen was his everything. I was a bit like that in my teenage years. I took that band stuff so seriously. I think a lot of Nerf Herder songs give this feeling off, ex. Vivian, Pantera Fans in Love, etc.
Its a fun song but always felt nostalgic to me about youth, hence the 'tomorrow may come, tomorrow may never come'. Nerf Herder songs are mainly goofy and stupid but there is often a nugget of real feeling in them. |

Hmm..I never really interpreted the song as a person waiting for a friend or someone in specific.
I always liked the simple pairs of opposing concepts in the lyrics. "Take your time, hurry up - the choice is yours, don't be late." Actually the whole song is almost strictly in that format.
The things he says are confused, confusing and unsettling. They remind me more of the jumble of contradictory instructions, advice, and messages we end up getting as we grow up. |

I think its interesting that though Jarvis Cocker was probably one of the biggest sex symbols of his time, he was still able to capture the feelings of basically every ordinary asshole in the world who gets drunk, tries to get laid, and sometimes, feels his life slipping away.
Musically the song just sort of blows me away. It builds right from the beginning and supercharges itself until it explodes like some massive-bombastic-90's-disco-fuck-everything-let's-party bomb. Not many pop songs have that almost orchestral power!! As others have said, it sums up a generation, or at least captures that really elusive feeling that was floating around in the air at the time. |

Its been about 10 years since I really got into Pulp..and I'm about 25 now. Its a lot like Hefner's Peppermint Taste in subject matter except with that crazy, disco feel that Pulp is so good at doing.
Unlike a lot of people who wrote here, I don't think its really about Deborah. Its yeah, more about sadness, or nostalgia, superimposed with your modern life (like the video), and that really almost heart-breaking chorus 'let's all meet up in the year 2000', when he really will never meet her again, or ever go back to those times.
Also, I'd like to say, its a very distinct feeling, as a man who lives alone, has had his share of adventures, to remember girls you knew as a boy and see them grown up, become adults, and get married. Its a very quiet feeling. |
