There's a good youtube video of this song (London, 2009) where she introduces the song with a little story about her childhood. Her performance suggests there is more to be read between the lines. The lyrics, for me, apply just as much to 2009 Dolly Parton as they do to childhood Dolly. I hear Dolly singing "I'm here, I can play my instrument, I can sing. I'm not a Joke, enough with the tit jokes, they hurt, you know?" Many consider her to be an underrated artist. I think she acknowledges this in a way. |

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: This is the most brilliant song ever written. I mean seriously, this song is simply saturated with HO references! HOrizon? HOzone layer? HOtel? Whole HO crew? HOs eatin HO cakes? There you HO again? jesus christ, this has got be the funniest thing I've ever heard! (I've always been disappointed that this song is not standard fare in most karaoke books. I have yet to find it.) |

My childhood friend and I always thought this song was "The Simmian Way" like the "Simmians" were some kind of wise old mystical tribe or forgotten culture that held all of the secrets to life. Listen to the song and tell me you don't hear it. Sihh-mee-an-way! We'd wonder to ourselves "Like, who are the Simmians, man? What is the way." How saddened we were when we learned the real lyrics. I still refuse to believe it, and to this day sing about the "Simmians" and their knowledge and wisdom. |
