Ben Folds – Not a Fan Lyrics 7 years ago
Great song, so Beautiful! Ok, so. According to Ben himself, in an interview on Sirius XM, he explained that he overheard a conversation in a café that inspired this song.

VERSE 1: a guy don't like his girlsfriend's taste in Music, but is OK with it, praising diversity and all that.

VERSE 2: the guy start to wonder if it's him that is wrong, since every of his girlfriend's friends love that same Music.

BRIDGE: the fact that something you tell yourself isn't a big deal (like the guy in verse 1) turns out to become a dealbreaker (verse 3).

VERSE 3: the guy realises that he was right from the start, the music is shit while trying to be high and Mighty - "a boy band with glasses, just minus the heart, he's shaking his ass and you call it art". As stated in the bridge, it can ruin the relationship.

Ben Folds – Cologne Lyrics 8 years ago
I agree with this interpretation, albeit fairly straightforward. Although, as one other commenter wrote, the 4 3 2... and no 1 might mean that he never reaches 1, never able to let go. That's all I got to add to your otherwise fine, fine post :)

Gorillaz – On Melancholy Hill Lyrics 9 years ago
This is an interesting interpretation, and if you watch the video of the song, the hunting and almost-killing of the manatee handler on Melancholy Hill could easily be interpreted as the addict trying to fend of, or get rid of (kill) his or her bad habit.

Arctic Monkeys – Snap Out Of It Lyrics 9 years ago
Here's a thought:
In the video, the woman is seen watching a video tape of herself kissing the camera lens, which i suspect is being held by her now ex. This could mean, as opposed to her being in love with someone new after her ex, that she is in fact still in love with her ex and he wants her to move on as he has. As in, "our love is over, darling, snap out of it".

Styx – Boat On The River Lyrics 11 years ago
The boat wouldn't need leaking of sinking for it to still mean death. In Greek mythology, a boat carries you across the river Styx to the land of the dead (Hades), and that boat isn't leaking or sinking.

Supertramp – Crime of the Century Lyrics 11 years ago
@Daddysfun
Thanks mate, warms my heart :D
And btw, the thing u wrote about the ending - being a loop with the harmonica from the School intro sounding, I love that! It could be interpreted so that ST meant that history repeats itself, and this had not occured to me until you wrote it. It doesn't matter how many corporations or governments are caught with their pants down preying on the week, there will always come more, they will never stop, just like their victims will never stop piling up. History repeats itself, indeed.

Bruce Hornsby – King of the Hill Lyrics 11 years ago
Haha, forgot to tell you, I interpret the song this way cause I live like that. I have a job I hate and a boss who is just like the king of the hill. I try to organize the work force, but when the boss sees me doing so he rewards those I try to get on my side and punished me with the worst jobs possible to break my will.

Oh, and incidently, my boss looks EXACTLY like the man on the album cover :D

Bruce Hornsby – King of the Hill Lyrics 11 years ago
Love this song! To me, this song is about capitalism and how the corporations want to own the company's labour force and do as they please with them.

In the first of the three verses Hornsby sings that he feels that the company he works for is a prison where they are all trapped, overlooking the plains (freedom). The boss cracks his whip, forces the workers to do job that is demeaning and hurts them both physically and mentally.
Meanwhile, he makes sure the company has a beautiful facade, that it looks good on the outside, a keen image. And if a worker would try to prove him wrong, they will feel his rage.

Second verse
The bossman and his sister (supposed to be a meaning?) wants Hornsby gone, they give him the shittiest of jobs to try to break down his will. They can't fire him, but try to tear him down to the point where he will leave the company himself.
The boss has not had to work a day in his life for the things he owns, his legacy took care of that. And he wants to keep it that way.

Verse three...
...tells us how Hornsby has it at home (in the song, ofc). He's poor, has a crappy home and how he wants out of it.
IMO this vese tells about organization, unions. Because, unions work perfectly as long as people gather, the workers need to gather and stick together. BUT, as the third verse states, the boss and the company give out bribes to shut the workers up and make them side with the company, meaning that the work force cannot organize and demand better conditions.

All in all, I'd say Hornsby wants to spread light on how companies tries to own their work force and control it like dictators, and that the only way to fight back is for the work force to organize. However, there are always greedy people who only thinks of theirselves who cannot see the big picture. And those people destroys the work force by letting the bossman, the king of the hill, push them around.

Bruce Hornsby – White Wheeled Limousine Lyrics 11 years ago
I'd say this one's fairly straight forward, about a man cheating and getting caught before the wedding. Whether or not they get past the marriage ceremony, I'm not sure, but since the rice is gone one can assume that it had been thrown, but soon after, they separated. The guests left and the limo never came to use.

Apart from the lyrics, this song itself is a masterpiece. The jazzy arrangements, especially the banjo riff and AMAZING triplets at 2:52, truly shows the skill of Hornsby and his band mates.

Bruce Hornsby – Walk in the Sun Lyrics 11 years ago
I think you're right on the money, the pieces fall to a whole with this explanation.

"Some people come for love, some for fantasy" - explains the poor misforune that some people are so desperate for love they think their last resort is a strip club (or brothel).

".--watching the men always looking down" - they dare not look him in the eyes, ashamed maybe?

However, I think he has actually found love.
"When two in the morning comes around - My baby comes home for me"
"I don't care much what they see - I know she saves it all for me"
"I know there will be a day - I know we'll figure out a way"
These excerpts all point, imo, to the fact that he has a discreet relationship with one of the exotic dancers, but they can't go public with it for reasons up to the imagination.
When the club closes at two, they can be together. He doesn't care that she gives other men her body, because he knows her love is only for him is that is far mor valuable than what the body can offer. And, some day, they will figure out a way to make it work.

Just one man's thoughts here, but whatever these lyrics are meant to mean, this is a dark song disguised in an upbeat tone with lots of major chords - Hornsby's speciality!

Mark Knopfler – Haul Away Lyrics 11 years ago
I'd say these lyrics are pretty straight forward.

The singer is with his wife (as he sings of his wedding ring) on a boat out to sea, who jumps into the ocean to take her life (the wind is still, ergo no storm set the boat in motion having her thrown over board), and when he sings that "you were never a steady bold one" it could refer to that she isn't brave enough to face the problems in life and instead takes her life (which also would explain the windless night-part).
But, there is a silver lining, as sung:

The morning brings
Lord a fresh young breeze
to fill our sails
to end the doldrums
Our lucky ship
speeds across the sea

This perticular excerpt, of course, also brings the thoughts of it being somewhat more imaginary, such as a dream dying, or maybe a set back in the singer's life that brings misery, but following rain is always sunshine.

There might be countless more explanations, but this is the one that comes to mind for me. Very beautiful song, it has that same perfect, wonderful gloomy feel that Brothers in Arms has. Just...perfect!

Montgomery Gentry – Cold One Comin' On Lyrics 12 years ago
Well, the music video for this song puts all pieces together. For those who haven't seen it, it shows how a wife looses her husband who is ill. How her life is shattered, how everything around her reminds her of her now late husband, how her whole world comes tumbling down around her and how she thinks that she can't go on anymore and have to take her own life. But, brighter days are ahead and she finds new things to live for. Well, we can asume anyway.

I don't know if this is the EXACT story MG wanted to convey, but the symbolic meaning is pretty laid out together with the vid.

Supertramp – Crime of the Century Lyrics 12 years ago
Seeing as how the album itself, Crime of the Century, is a concept album, all the songs together tells one whole story. It tells about Rudy not liking the school system, wanting to change, but when he doesn't get any help or understanding from others so he "hides in his shell", leaving the rest of the world behind him more and more and finally goes completely crazy - madness overpowers.

The song, Crime of the Century, IMO, is a summary or what the effects of these persons leave behind and how their story is told. I'd say that the term Crime of the Century means the crime on humanity, played out by corporations and sometimes the governments. And although they are to take the blame, we the people are left to pay the fee. That when Rudy decides that the schooling system is bad he's told to shut up. So instead, be ends up seeking understanding from those on the other side of the fence, and although they agree, they believes he should stop moaning about it.

Can you see my point? People who aren't pleased with something are shot down, told to be quite, and in the end, driven to insanity, by the big corporations and/or governments. That is, the Crime of the Century.

Although this song was written in the 70s it still applies today. I'm from Sweden, and every day I read about our right wing parties dividing the people in rich and poor, lending a hand to those who have it all while they kick on those who really need the help. Supertramp knew it then, and we, I, live it now.

Supertramp – Fool's Overture Lyrics 12 years ago
When I saw Roger Hodgson play this live in Norway 2011 he told us that the song was created from three separate pieces that he couldn't decide what to do with, so he put them together and Fool's Overture was born.

Supertramp – Fool's Overture Lyrics 12 years ago
I don't know if you have noticed or not, but on the album cover (Even in the quietest moments...), the sheet music open on the snow covered piano says "Fool's Overture", but the notes play "Star Spangled Banner". Whether or not this has anything to do with the meaning of the song, I can't say, but it wouldn't be the first time Supertramp sends a message about America.

Supertramp – Better Days Lyrics 12 years ago
I've been thinking about these lyrics for a while now. They seemed too simple, too...spoken to be meant word for word, spoken by the author. Then I saw the music video for the song. I'd say the song is meant to tell how even the worst people in history (Hitler, Stalin, Attila, etc.) always believed that they were doing the "right thing", although defined by themselves or whatever they believed in. Maybe they believed that their way was the best way to happiness, and in some cases, the only way one should live. Hitler believed that his wars were holy wars that forever would cleanse the world of illness and disability - a utopia, of course, but he still believed in it. The famed crusades; they believed that by spreading the same religion across the world, no people would ever find themselves in conflict with others again.

Anyway, that's my view. I'd love to hear others, so please comment!

Supertramp – Gone Hollywood Lyrics 12 years ago
"No, I think "Gone Hollywood" was not…it was third person, not autobiographical. I think Rick knew what despair was like; he's gone through lots of periods of despair and you can hear that on Crime of the Century, I think that was definitely him, he was talking about, but I think he was putting himself in an American's shoes here - a little bit. I'm not going to say that totally. I mean, he's probably has felt like he's in a dumb motel in the middle of nowhere in Los Angeles. It was definitely Rick tuning in to the valleys of Hollywood. And seeing the shallowness and the difficulties. It's a pretty neurotic place".

--Roger Hodgson, In the Studio with Redbeard for The Making of Breakfast in America (first aired in June 1990).

Although there have been much debate on what this song is about, some even claim that it's Rick's feelings about Roger's departure, but according to an interview with Rick Davies on French radio, this song is about a less than perfect concert promoter who remain unnamed.
