Arcade Fire – Abraham's Daughter Lyrics 11 years ago
I agree to an extent with soonerbob.
It's always assumed that God was the one who insisted Abraham sacrifice his son as a 'test of his faith' - but throughout the bible, time and time again, it's satan that offers us tribulations and tests, not God. God has no need to test us, he knows our hearts better than we do ourselves. In my opinion, the Angel in this song is Satan himself, appearing as an angel of light - as he so often does, in an attempt to lead Abraham astray. But God sent His angel to intercede, in the form of Abraham's own daughter. She was God's angel. When she raises her bow, she raises it at the Angel, and tells him to let young Isaac go. Abraham seems to be the sheep in this retelling, Isaac the innocent victim, the Angel is the Devil and the nameless girl with more courage and strength than any of them is the true hand of God.

Daughter – Landfill Lyrics 12 years ago
This song draws such a beautiful parallel...
In my opinion this song is about being used and then tossed aside like garbage. The imagery the lyrics paint is stunning, the wayside garbage that she feels like after being used and then just left wondering how she let it happen... And yet she still loves him. Because for her it was real. He lied and deceived, used her for his own purposes and then moved on but she can't. She's stuck, like that garbage in the landfill, stagnate and waiting ...
In her own way she's fighting back. Telling him to wipe his eyes and walk away... but as he walks away she can't help but relive it all. Their electricity, their connection... and it's torture because she knows now that it wasn't real.
And yet she knows that it's so dangerous because a part of her still yearns for him. This small, still part of her, the one that clings to what she thought they had is still begging him to turn around and come back for her... even though the rest of her hates him.

Jónsi – Tornado Lyrics 12 years ago
This song sounds like it's being sung to a child or a baby, even the lyrics, though brutal, are so raw and real I feel like it's directed at a child - telling them what lies ahead.

"You grow, you roar
Although disguised
I know you

You'll learn to know"

Telling the child, in this instance my two year old niece, You'll grow up, and you'll roar and make as much noise as you can, you'll put on make up and experiment with your image, you'll disguise yourself, but I'll still know you... and eventually you'll learn to know you too.

"You grow, you grow like tornado
You grow from the inside
Destroy everything through
Destroy from the inside"

You'll grow up, fast and out of control, like a tornado. You'll grow up emotionally aswell, from the inside you'll grow. The next lines I don't think are literaly meaning destroy, but by growing you destroy, you have to destroy to create, and sometimes she'll have to hurt and 'destroy' to make room for new growth - There'll be times where she'll be devestated and in pain, but it's all a part of the growing process.

"Erupt like volcano
You flow through the inside
You kill everything through
You kill from the inside

You'll...
You'll learn to know"

She'll get mad sometimes, and she'll get frustrated and make bad choices and mistakes, she'll 'kill' everything and it'll kill her inside. Some things will be taken and some heartaches can't be avoided. But she'll learn "You'll... You'll learn to know" She'll learn from her mistakes, learn to know how to get back up and move on. She'll learn...

"I wonder if I'm allowed ever to see
I wonder if I'm allowed to ever be free"

Questions she'll ask herself one day, cause we all do at some point.

"You sound so blue
You now are gloom

You're now so blue
You now are gloom

I wonder if I'm allowed just ever to be "

I'm not sure what this part means, but it completes the song... the lullaby.

Strays Don't Sleep – For Blue Skies Lyrics 12 years ago
I must have heard this song a very long time ago, and I downloaded it, and forgot all about it. Then, about a year ago, I was reading this epic amazing book called 'Unwind' by Neal Shusterman, and this song came on during the most horribly, nauseating chapter of the book - probably of any book ever written. If you've read it, you know what I'm talking about. All I can say, is this is that character's anthem in my mind. It was the first time I truly heard this song, while I was reading that chapter, and now every time I hear this song, that's all I can think about. I've read the book several times again since then, and every time I reach that chapter, I turn on Strays Don't Sleep - For Blue Skies and I let it loop as I read that chapter.

Florence + the Machine – What the Water Gave Me Lyrics 12 years ago
Okay, this is totally random and completely out of nowhere, but I've had this fantastic song on repeat since it came out last week, and the moment I heard it, I knew... this song paints the novel 'Unwind' by Neal Shusterman across my mind's canvas. I don't know why, but it's all I can think about while i'm listening to this song. All the experiences that the characters go through the in the book, and all the heartache and longing that happens along the way. This song feels like it was written for the book. Of course, I know it wasn't, but I guess it's just exactly how I 'felt' the book when I read it. So I went and picked it up again yesterday and read it again with this song on repeat. Oh Florence, how you perfect even perfection.

Pink – Sober Lyrics 12 years ago
God. I heard this song ages ago, around when the music video came out, and I loved the dark, edgy vibe of it, and the way it just flows through you. The kind of music that makes you vibe to it whether you're in the right mood for it or not.
But now, now it hurts.
I'm living with someone I hate. We don't love each other anymore, and we don't enjoy each other anymore. We fight... all. the. time! we HATE each other, or maybe we're both just too wounded to admit we love each other anymore. I don't know why he stays, but I know why I stay.
"When it's good, then it's good, it's so good, 'till it goes bad. 'Till you're trying to find the you that you once had. I have heard myself cry, never again. Broken down in agony, just trying to find a friend."
I'm HORRIFIED of leaving. I'm so scared of leaving, of giving up. After everything that we've poured into this, into each other. After everything I've given him, how am I ever going to feel good again without him?
I don't want to be this girl, the one that never wants to be alone, staying up all night so I have an excuse to sleep in and not see him in the mornings. I hate starting fights with him because our house is graveyard quiet if we're not fighting. Even though it's miserable, even though I hate him sometimes and I hate this place, it's the first time in my life I remember ever feeling really safe. I can't go back to what it was like before, but I can't keep doing this.
This is not the way I want my story to end.

30 Seconds to Mars – Kings And Queens Lyrics 12 years ago
Beauty In The Breakdown. I guess that's pretty much how this song comes together in my mind. The music, lyrics aside, is like a battle anthem. All up-lifting and thrilling; inspiring. I feel like the lyrics are misinterpreted because they 'seem' negative.

Into your lives
Hopeless and Taken
We stole our new lives
Through blood and pain
In defense of our dreams
In defense of our dreams

If you imagine those lyrics in the face of incomparable tyranny, they sound like a victory. Stealing back, through blood and pain your new lives, the ones that were taken from you and put so hopelessly out of your reach. Doing it all in defense of your dreams.
The chorus, I feel like, is the part where everyone gets hung up.

We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the children of a lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell

the first verse quotes right before the chorus, Father has spoken. Maybe the chorus is what 'Father' said? All in all it sounds like the recounting of a mighty battle. Maybe literal, or symbolic. And then we get to the third chorus, and I feel like the song opens up with this gorgeous explosion of possibilities.

The age of man is over
A darkness comes and all
These lessons that we learned here
Have only just begun

The age of man is over, because we've become something more. We're not just men and women anymore, we've connected on a deeper level. Through all of our sufferings, and through all of our common battles, we've become something more than individual beings.
We've become a single heart, beating out a united rhythm. At our core, we all want the same things: security, acceptance, love. That's the evolution from the age of men, which is all about war and greed, to a new age centered on these common goals. Overlooking individual differences and focusing instead on the commons that drive us all.
This sounds like an anthem for that.
It almost evens sounds like an epilogue to their other song 'This Is War' - it's the other side of that battle; that evolution. When it's said and done and, though it wasn't pretty, we've all come out the other side of it and begun to rebuild.
