First, I think it is smart of any artist not to give their interpretation of their art. It limits its impact. It would be like looking at a picture of a gorgeous ocean and the artist tells you it's about an elephant, then points to a 1" inch elephant painted in the rocks. All you will see after that is the elephant. Anyways, this is my interpretation of this. How many special people change How many lives are living strange Where were you while we were getting high? " I see this as being about life changing and people you were once really close to are no longer part of your life . Maybe they are dealing with things that so different from yours. You can be partying and you don't know what kind of crap that could be going down for them at the exact same time. That is life. Where were you while we were getting high?" Wipe that tear away from you eye, from just thinking about. Then once again, remembering what you were doing while they were dying" Cause people believe that. I think it is about 3 different women he has known and who have impacted him in his life. Cowgirl in the Sand - Is that young woman who he had an agreed on temporary thing with. She is like magic, and unusual; a free spirit. They could be something more "old enough to change your name" , but she is young and elusive. Many want to be with her and she floats through relationships, softly and plays at love this way. Ruby in the Dust- Is a fling he had with a married woman. He questions if that is what she is all about, using her marriage as an excuse not to get involved. "Has your band begun to rust?" Her marriage allows her to just play at love and she breaks hearts with broken promises. they could have been more, but this is her game. Woman of His Dreams- Is the girl who seems so perfect, she intimidates the hell out of him. He runs because he is afraid of having what he wants and ruining it. With his drug habits or worse ruining who she is, with his habits and lifestyle. "this is not what it seems" She is like brilliant purple words, significant, and he, a grey background, insignificant; in his eyes. He can't believe she cares about him and he wonders if this is a game she plays, because he really wants her to be so much more. That's my interpretation. |

| I think the meaning is a little different than most of ones I have read. First Tom Petty said it was not about a suicide. That is an urban legend. What I think it is about is the disillusionment that can come from loving. She was an American girl raised on Promises- She put her trust in to someone and he broke his promises. It was a great big world with lots of places to run to- Lots of men to run to also. She is using promiscuity to get rid of her pain. And if she had to die tryin' She had one little promise she was gonna keep-That is to herself, not to put her heart out there to get hurt again. Oh yeah, all right, take it easy baby, make it last all night-There is the promiscuity. Well it was kind of cold that night she stood alone on her balcony-He is asleep after sex (typical guy) she decides to get some fresh air. Out on 441 like the waves crashin’ on the beach- the drone of a highway can sound like the ocean. For one desperate moment there he crept back in her memory- She is trying to forget him but, it’s hard when you are alone with your thoughts. God it’s so painful that something so close could still be so far out of reach-She knows what she really wants she will never find through going to bed with a lot of guys but, she can’t put her heart out there yet, her body but not her heart. | |
