It's a call to sincerity. Albeit, with a bit of cynicism, cause love should'nt destroy. The love is 'fucking' kind of love, selfish. That why children, he feels for. Kids are usually pretty transparent and real. By the end of the song the character is a bit rueful and would give anything to have just an ounce of sincerity that would have brought him to a better end. |

just my simple interpretation, I looked up a few of the references... synopsis: basically two would be lovers, but it ain't happenin'. she's leaning into it, though with reservations because her partner is so reserved (he?) is tepid, more so than she is. She tries to point out he probably has more passion and direction than he is letting on to ('though you say you are not a Templar man'; The Templar Knights of the middle ages were Christian military knights - if you were one of them then you were basically fighting for your religion - so you must have some passion about it. But he seems to feign not to be into it maybe because he doesn't want to expose himself, be vulnerable? who knows...). She lets on she is leaning into the potential of the relationship by the mentioning the eagle one day has to land - an eagle obviously starves if it circles forever without landing or going after its quarry... then the humming "When the Dove's Cry" a song by Prince about lovers who are hot for one another for sure but argue and have trouble (thus crying dove). The Thumbalina part I cant quite get - but it is a reference to a fairytale of a miniature girl who is flooded with wedding proposals from many small animals until she finds a flower prince just her size and she accepts...anyways, maybe someone could better make sense of that part. |

yes as others get it, it's bout a troubled relationship. the repetitious scale 'dun, dun dun dun dun' captures some of the obsession. But maybe the relationship even more troubled than hinted at in the song with this black and white video on youtube. video offers up a whole new level where the chaotic midsection makes sense- the lover is sent with a gun to murder someone else involved in a love triangle or something only hinted at i guess and there's a harmonica playing old man who is shown to be kind of puppeteering the woman dancer as if he is beezlebub...the devil who put her in his trance and sent her on a mission to kill off a romantic threat. the edgy middle eastern tone makes sense. you should check it out. really adds edge to the song. |

i totally get the Vulcan reference as i must be one myself... Yes, it works as a Star Trek reference. Very well actually. And as you may or may not know, Spock, the Vulcan on Star Trek, is half human, half Vulcan. On his home planet, Vulcans were not under the sway of emotions, being extremely logical, thus giving their minds great power and ability. But Spock (the only Vulcan on the starship Enterprise), whose mother was human and father a Vulcan, was a mix. At times his logical judgment was affected by his human/emotional inheritance. But mostly, he operated based on logic alone. The reference of eruptions and disasters and lava could not only work as sexually but also double as an over dramatic description of someone who is usually reserved and cautious in the relationship/emotional realm. Tentatively he explores his emotional involvement with the woman. But is sure sounds like sex to me with the electric shocks. Being logical, he has learned how to give a little gas on the clitoris in just the right way. …but alas, our unfortunate woman doesn’t get to have the whole deal from him. He remains emotionally reserved and contained, unwilling? or incapable of expressing love or affection or commitment. Vulnerability issue maybe. Thus she only “keeps calm” while watching the sex go by knowing not much more on the emotional front will be developing. But she did gave it a window of opportunity. Well, that poses an interesting question: would you rather an emotionally distant partner and great sex? or a partner who fumbles the ball so to speak with the sex, but you love the connection….? Maybe its not mutually exclusive. oh, the drama of begin human, and why the vulcans amongst us play it safe. Being quite vulcan myself, i know i am sad when i cannot connect - its from this fear of vulnerability thing. Sex is great and all but if you cannot really be emotionally present and empathic with another person, the sex is actually kind of hollow. ps: my parents suffered - dad was a sucker for sex but locked up emotionally. mother very very lonely till the end. Maybe you stop wanting sex with someone who can’t relate to you emotionally. The guy could be super hot but if they don’t work on the emotional level, you don’t really want them touching you much (well maybe for a day or two, but it gets old). |

To me, this song speaks bordering more on abstract than literal; a conversation of a very sensitive aware person with them-self. Normally their passion and authentic expression is hidden away but one day comes to the surface and they are keen to be more in touch with it. But the person consciously know that for this 'passion awareness' to exist they need a hidden place where there is protection for this delicate inner authentic passion to manifest, to be alive in their mind. The 'he' referred to toward the end _is_ this love personified and she wants to go where this personified 'he' passion can exists be alive and merge with it, be it. Merging is certainly sexual, but it is more on an energetic level. What is strong, dark, divine, can turn invisible and hide in the air? Certainly not a physical lover...more like a divine muse...I hear the flute kind of symbolize this, echoing in a depths of a darkened jungle, leading you on, hinting at a physical location but nowhere to be found, Krishna like, divine and magical. To me this song is about denial of some kind of truth, stubbornly believing one has a better 'truth' or answer in your own lie you would like to believe. This is true to me in my life now personally, but I think this song refers specifically to 9/11 from the intro, and the 'better way' is, like someone metioned below, 'new killer' refering to nuclear. 'Hey, let's go to war. That's the 'better way'. David plays with cynicism frequently. Not being literal or direct is sometimes more powerful than saying "y'all are stupid in a trance, believing the government dance, yeah, let's go to war,..." Life is precious. Don't blindly believe the government or newspapers. Figure out whats more important in your own life. |

yes, what people said before - tough time of adolescence and really want to live out fantasy, lust, whatever but at the same time having the church or parents inside your head with prohibitions and being caught in this tension, then going ahead anyways and suffering. Makes you never want to be a teenager again, the pressure drives one to seek a way out alternatives like suicide. it seems there is no good answer. If I could talk to my younger self today i would say just take it easy. Be yourself. Relax, this time will pass. When you get older it will be clearer to you how to be, so don't worry so much about peer pressure from anybody. The church or your parents. Journal for yourself, be yourself, help others. This is a time of learning. forgive yourself and just keep learning, this is a time to learn how to live and think for yourself. |

My vague, inner movie experience of this… [Movie curtains open] Someone is a couch potato and lazy bones, maybe watching TV all day. The flickering screen flashing on his face in the dark, curtain drawn room, as he munches popcorn from a bag. Someone, a friend or such, challenges him to make an effort, get up! and give some effort! But he comes back halfway - tell me where and I will decide when - still a lazy bones, but there seems to be something in him that is willing, but still lazy. And somewhat independent minded. But he goes, and he does. And as he goes, his laziness is still with him, though he is doing the work, it is ego work, he is working for compensation of some kind. He is successful, it seems some kind of luck was with him, rising above the clouds…but he is above the clouds with his ego - he still wants to rest on his laurels and let his luck carry the day… But not so fast…as the attention he has garnered draws criticism and circumspection from those who sit in the high chairs - who is this fool? - and he realizes he needs to check himself, his motives, vapishness etc., and maybe turn around, of course, when he feels like it, though the pressure of saving face and stubbornly sticking to his faulty ground, duke it out, but in the face of mounting criticism, looks dangerous. Reluctantly, he turns around, head bent, and descends back down, facing all who’s eyes were upon him (the chanting crowd)…..[screen fades, sound fades] A personal addendum: And after the credits roll, for the few people still left in the theatre...the sound of a TV fades in and then on the screen - there his is again, dark room, flickering TV screen and a bag of popcorn. This is a very cynical song, but Hefner is all about cynicism when it comes to relationships. Like, raw painful truth. Their songs make me smile with a sneer sometimes, cause it's true. Love ain't all flowers… Basically some severe co-dependence going on…no need to say more really… The woman, according to the writers perception, doesn't have the capacity to express what she needs, she seems to have a guilty past, or so the guy thinks/projects is the situation, but maybe is just excusing himself when in fact he is just in it for the sex. But it is up to the guy, according to himself, to 'work it out' of her somehow, cause she seems closed down and unavailable in some kind of distant silent way. He notes she was clicking her heels and sticking her chest out cause she was starting to feel - attributing his 'work' as being successful but you don't really trust his observations, cause 'having her on the chair in the middle of the living room', seems like he is just screwing to screw. That's why this kind of 'love' don't stop no wars/cancer just his own heart - cause it's not love. It's his conscience that needs pricking…and he's aware of this, in a way, thus the final refrain - he believe love cannot stop war or heal cancers etc. His understanding of love is so limited, cannot see beyond a physical co-dependent perspective. Sad. |

very interesting...this song in my experience of it is that someone has died and everything they once knew is...new. One soul/consciousness...as you like, has a new body and experiencing all new things except one - fear - that remains over from the past life and continues to haunt this new life. (Tendencies and predilections remain habitual from life to life if they are not shifted...if you like). As far as ‘love is lost’, to me she has lost her heart and true will somehow, just as she had in the previous life (my extrapolation), due to fear, and it persists in this new life. She marries (or due to lust, simply has sex as was going on the entire video) with someone ‘above’ her (“greater men”) , all the wrong reasons, thus love is lost and now she has a child (“Say hello, your beautiful girl”) and her world is no longer carefree (“wave goodbye to the life without pain”). Her early life was carefree because she was born wealthy (“Your maid is new...”), now “what have you done”....everything changes and will probably impact her greatly, why the uncomfortable mood as, dastedden (below) observed. (i like the reconstituting bodies in the beginning, like electronic reincarnation until a final body and form appears, but then even those bodies appear fractured (fractured emotions, fractured mind, fractured love...) once formed, monotone colors...love is lost. brilliant. sad...) |

People have screwed up expectations regarding love. Mine included. I am in repair. Society is ill. We learn through osmosis. But don't blame. Take charge of yourself. Try reading Rumi, Kabir and other great love poetry to recover. Make friends with yourself. Find your mentors in life who point to the positive.
