Sting – Fields of Gold Lyrics 11 years ago
For me, Fields Of Gold is one of the best songs ever written.
The music as well as the lyrics are very deep and full of emotion.
I guess the song is about a relationship that broke up long ago (I think so because of the repeated phase “You’ll remember me...”) although it seemed to be so perfect, that even the sun was jealous of it.
The change of perspectives is quite striking: the first, third, fifth and sixth verses as well as the bridge (“I never made promises lightly...”) are written in the perspective of the lyrical I (Sting himself — the person who had the relationship) in a kind of retrospective, it seems he wants his former girlfriend to remember the past relationship, too, because he lists some of the beautiful moments the couple had (going for a walk together — 1st verse; Sting’s confession, that he loves her — 2nd verse; lie together in fields of gold). Maybe he has still got some hope, that one day this relationship will get a second chance (?).
As a contrast, the second and fourth verses are written from the view of a third person who seems to watch another couple’s meeting in the same place (“Fields of Barley”- verse 4). In verse 4 Sting even seems to describe the feelings of the other man (“Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth”). Perhaps Sting wants to express, that there are much more broken hearted people with the same destiny he had — first a perfect relationship, but later a disappointing experience (?)
And, finally, I think the sunset in the 5th verse is a symbol of universal transience and the running children can be seen as a symbol of hope.

This song makes me also remember a quite similar experience of my own life. Once I performed Fields Of Gold on guitar at school together with a keyboarder I loved very much. Singing and making music with him was indescribably intense, but he didn’t love me, so all that’s left for me are these memories and the music.

Kraftwerk – The Model Lyrics 12 years ago
Ralf Hutter has written this song when he fell in love with a model. But she didn't want him.

That's one of the greatest anti-war songs ever!

The Moody Blues – Nights In White Satin Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is my favourite one by Moody Blues. The music is perfect and the vocals are full of emotion. It's just amazing how Moody Blues created all these powerful orchestra sections by using just one Mellorton-tape-synthesizer!
I think the song is about lovesickness. The singer loves somebody, but this person doesn't know anything about his feelings or either doesn't want him. I guess "Nights in white satin" is a metaphor for sleepless nights the singer has because of being lovesick.

Depeche Mode – John The Revelator Lyrics 13 years ago
This could be correct. I have seen a video clip of DM's "John the revelator" - and this one was about Bush.

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Sweet Hitch-Hiker Lyrics 13 years ago
In this song, John Fogerty shows, that making music and riding a motorcycle are things that fit together perfectly.
It's pure rock, a song about riding on the highway with a kind person on pillion, feeling the freedom.

The original video clip of the song is also great!

The Beach Boys – Good Vibrations Lyrics 13 years ago
Good Vibrations is a great song in the history of rock n roll. The vocals and the music are so great.

But the instrument the beach boys used to produce this theremin sound wasn't a real theremin.
A theremin is played without touching the antennas.
They played a so called "Tannerin", an instrument invented by Paul Tanner. It has got the same sound as a theremin but it's played by touching a metal surface with a metal stylus.

John Fogerty – Hot Rod Heart Lyrics 13 years ago
I wonder about being the first to comment on this beautiful John Fogerty- song :)
Well, it's about the joy of riding a (chopper-)motorcycle.
Since I'm riding such a bike myself, I can understand this wonderful feeling of freedom on the highway John is singing about. I just love John's expressive guitar playing and his fantastic voice.
Hot Rod Heart is my favourite song!

Gerry Rafferty – Baker Street Lyrics 13 years ago
Perhaps this song is autobiographical, but I think that it was inspired by Doyle's stories about Sherlock Holmes, because there are lots of parallels to them in the lyrics , for example:
"Way down the street there's a light in his place
He opens the door he's got that look on his face
And he asks you where you've been
You tell him who you've seen
And you talk about anything"
it reminds me of the beginning of some Sherlock Holmes stories, when people come to the famous literal detective to tell him their sorrows. And also:
"He's got this dream about buyin' some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one night stands
And then he'll settle down there's a quiet little town
And forget about everything"
That's the scene when Holmes wanted to stop his work as a detective.

Well, anyway, it's a great song, great guitar and saxophone.

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Effigy Lyrics 13 years ago
It's definetly a political song. But I'm not sure what it's exactly about. I already heard that Fogerty criticizes the Nixon government in this song (the "silent majority weren't keeping quiet anymore"--> they are against the government) (?)

For me, the most important thing in this song is the great expressive guitar solo. The music is very well done.
But there's one thing I'd like to know: who is meant with "Effigy"?

Herman's Hermits – No Milk Today Lyrics 13 years ago
Yeah, you're right. I'm 17 years old and I love the music of the 60ies and 70ies. It just goes on my nerves when other people say that I'm *too young* for this music. I'm sorry to tell but the biggest part of the music stuff that is made today just makes me sick ;)

No Milk Today is a real classic for me, I loved listening to this catchy tune since my early youth :)
I wasn't that sure about the meaning of the song, but I guess glamorous*sunrise is right.

Cool version. It reminds me very much of choir practises in my school choir :)
But who has written it?

The Kinks – Sunny Afternoon Lyrics 13 years ago
"Sunny afternoon" is a real grooving, bluesy song about a guy, who has lost his money (and luxury) through high taxes. I like it very much, cause it's musically well done, a real timeless classic.

Chicago – If You Leave Me Now Lyrics 13 years ago
That's such a great ballad! I just love the guitar solo, the orchestra parts, this swinging bass line... and Peter Cetera's indescribable sweet vocals.
I have often listened to this song when I was feeling lovesick... sad stories, but great music, that made me feel better

Kraftwerk – Neon Lights Lyrics 13 years ago
I like Neonlights very much because it's a Kraftwerk song with a very romantic feeling to it (especially because of the theremin-sounding melody of Ralf Hutter's minimoog synthesizer, his dreamy vocals and the relaxed backbeat). But I think the German version sounds better than the English, a bit more melodic.
Kraftwerk's synth sound is really the most amazing music ever. *KRAFTWERK RULEZ*

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 13 years ago
Musically, Stairway to Heaven is a masterpiece of guitarplaying. The chord combinations and the pickin' is just great (it took a long time for me to learn playing this song ;)
And thinking about the maening of the lyrics I want to agree with judahlion.

Procol Harum – A Whiter Shade of Pale Lyrics 13 years ago
I think that there are songs, where the music itself is more important that the lyrics.
And I guess that “A Whiter Shade Of Pale” is one of these songs.
If I should interpret the lyrics, nothing better comes to my mind than being drunken or stoned ;)
But the sound of the Bach-inspired Hammond M 100 organ & Leslie as well as the simple but effective bass line and the powerful vocals makes me just think: “Good work, Procol Harum!”

Depeche Mode – Route 66 Lyrics 13 years ago
I was quite surprised when I first listened to this song -I agree with brian w- it sounds really different to other DM- songs. But I like Depeche Mode to be a bit more "rockin'". Great Highway song. I can really imagine riding down the 66 on a Harley while listening ;)

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Gloomy Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't think you're right. Creedence Clearwater Revival have never made "drug songs". The bluesy sound of this song is inspired by John Fogerty's fantasies about "The Grand Old Southland" (Louisiana), just like the whole "Creedence Clearwater Revival"-album, or also the song Born On The Bayou.

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Down On The Corner Lyrics 13 years ago
I think Down On The Corner is a simple but groovy good-time-music-song.
I guess the meaning of this song is just "going back to the musical roots",
because CCR were often playing Skiffle music before the time they got
successful.
And you can match the fictional musicians in the songtext to the
Creedence musicians (Willy=John Fogerty, Poorboy=Tom Fogerty, Blinky=Stu Cook,
Rooster=Doug Clifford)

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Born On The Bayou Lyrics 13 years ago
Born on the Bayou is definetly a masterpiece of John Fogerty. The music (especially the guitar riffs and the bassline) and the lyrics are so deep and powerful! And there's just one chord in this song: E7!

While listening to this song I can really close my eyes and imagine the romantic bluesy Mississippi bayous with these large paddle steamers and the "Grand Old South".
John's vocals are also just indescribable good. He's perfectly immitating the accent of the South.

Great CCR!!!

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Bad Moon Rising Lyrics 13 years ago
I love Creedence for making such great songs like Bad Moon Rising. It's just amazing how Fogerty creates such a great and powerful groove with just three chords!

Depeche Mode – Enjoy The Silence Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is just about love and how easy rash words can destroy a relationship. I personally can't see any drug references there.
"Enjoy the silence" is the first song by DM I listened to and I liked it immediatly.
This song is the most romantic music ever!!!!!!!

(By the way: can anybody tell me the original key of Enjoy the Silence? I've already tried almost everything but no chord fits to the record version...:( I just know that the live acoustic version is played in C minor:)

Creedence Clearwater Revival – (Wish I Could) Hideaway Lyrics 13 years ago
John Fogerty has written this song for his brother Tom who was leaving the band at this time and here he is regretting that Tom is leaving.
The strange thing is just the fact that on the Pendulum album is a second song, "Chameleon", where John speaks quite though about his brother

Depeche Mode – Shake The Disease Lyrics 13 years ago
I disagree with the statements about depression, drug addiction or things like that. I guess the “disease” that makes talking to his girlfriend hard for the singer is just his fear that his girlfriend might leave him because he hasn’t got that much time for being together with her (perhaps because of work). You can read it in the 2nd verse: “some people have to be permanently together ... I’ve got things to do and I’ve said before that I know you have too, when I’m not there in spirit I’ll be there”.
And also the misery he describes deals with being misunderstood by her: She might think he doesn't love her anymore just because he hasn't that much time for meetings.

(By the way, it’s one of my favourite songs by DM. Pretty like these catchy synth riffs and the rhythm reminds me very much of Kraftwerk’s synth music ;)
