I think he is singing to the new man in her (the woman of his affections) life, he is addressing him saying 'can you?' be all the things he is. Maybe she had an affair? I also think the 'clean' reference is perhaps a marriage, 'kneel before the king' and say he is clean, possibly virginal (white blank page) or has not loved anyone before. The lyrics above are wrong. It is BRINK, not brake. The final versuses are either to the girl or himself, more likely the girl. She clearly did not know how much he loved her, or simply didn't care. Mumford and Sons are amazing. |

I have read about this song in every place possible. I was always lead to believe it was about a miscarriage. But where was June. No it never came around. If it did it never made a sound (June being her expected date, but it never came) I never knew her, but I loved her just the same, I loved her name (they had chosen her name and created a life for her in their minds, he never new her but he loved her). |

I agree with the comments...I love the live album. I think he misses her, thats it. That nostalgic song that reminds you of a summer, a year, a relationship, a friendship, that leaves you yearning for something lost. He is thinking back to his broken heart and how he lay in his room not knowing what to do (we have all been there)... I think she predicted the future....join a band, go on tour and think of me when you sing. This girl seems to be throughout the album in his thoughts and words. |

I cannot wait to see this band in April. They are not one hit wonders, they have a live CD, new album soon and a tour. Anyway, I think this song was maybe a one night stand with a friend he was in love with (the band played some song about forgetting yourself for while), he forgot himself that night and this one. If she was more than that surely his friends (your friends say you look like you have seen a ghost) would have known her either as his friend or girlfriend? I think she knows how he feels (she makes sure she sees you)...typically female (I am a female by the way)... The beauty of this song, no matter who 'the girl' is, everyone has been in this position. |
