So when I first heard this song, I thought it was a prostitute too. But the more I listened & after I read Brendon's comment on it, I kind of think it's like this: The girl's in a marriage she doesn't want to be in. She's probably cheating on her husband as well. This explains the "double life" he refers to. She paints her fingers with a close precision He starts to notice empty bottles of gin (She's unhappy) And takes a moment to assess the sin She's paid for A lonely speaker in a conversation (He doesn't listen to her) Her words are swimming through his ears again (Nothing really registers to him when she talks) There's nothing wrong with just a taste of what you've paid for (She probably got married for status, but that's all she's getting out of the relationship) Say what you mean Tell me I'm right And let the sun rain down on me Give me a sign I want to believe The viewpoint of an outsider, maybe a lover. Woah, Mona Lisa, You're guaranteed to run this town (Because of the money/ social standing from her relationship) Woah, Mona Lisa, I'd pay to see you frown (In reference to the painting. Mona Lisa is famous for her tell nothing expression. The girl is pretending to be happy, but the narrator knows the truth & is saying he'd pay to see her not hide her true feelings) He senses something, call it desperation (He knows something is wrong) Another dollar, another day (Again, he's probably rich. The longer she stays with him, the longer the wealth is shared. ) And if she had the proper words to say, She would tell him But she'd have nothing left to sell him (She would tell him she's not happy, but he'd leave her.)
