John Frusciante – Wishing Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This is one of my most favorite JF songs (and I love them all!), not only because it is so beautiful musically but the thoughts and emotions conveyed are also so beautiful. I think it is about being true to one's self, through times high and low ('life changes not you') and that through these hardships, he found his true self. I've gone and I've stayed And though both happened At the same time I know which one I like And which one I hate And as usual, he talks about the insignificance of time, that you can make mistakes but you can always make it up. The first paragraph alludes to wishing for someone who can understand him, but I don't think it is in the literal sense. I think the song is about understanding one's self and being content with who you are. |

John Frusciante – A Firm Kick Lyrics | 12 years ago |
First of all, these lyrics above are not accurate. The right lyrics are in the booklet in the album. Maybe I will post the right lyrics later. As for the song, I think it's about a former girlfriend who cheated on him. And he just can't accept infidelity, because he loves her and trusted her. "I'd never guess that you do me wrong I'll never accept that dance and song" "You make a never That's Forever Knowing what you deny" I've been listening to this song all day. His emotions are so clear on this record. Beautiful. |
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Desecration Smile Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I think this song is a bit too slow and boring, but I like the lyrics, and here's my take: All alone not by myself Another girl bad for my health I've seen it all through someone else He's with this girl, who's bad for his health because the last time he fell in love, he got his heart broken ("I've seen it all through someone else") Celebrated but undisturbed Serenaded by the terror bird It's seldom seen but it's never heard "Terror bird" is Heather, who took him to see the LA band Terror. She's serenading him in private. I think "seldom seen" again refers to him falling in love, which for him doesn't happen too often. Never in the wrong time or wrong place Desecration is the smile on my face The love I made is the shape of my space My face, my face I think this is a reference to the age difference between him and Heather. People must have said that they are not right together, but AK feels differently, he thinks it is neither "the wrong time" nor the "wrong place". I am not sure what "Desecration is the smile on my face" but I THINK again it alludes to the age difference -- perhaps how other people may have said that he is 'desecrating' her, being much older, but to him it is just love. I love the following line "The love I made is the shape of my space" -- to me, it means that when he loves her, he is giving his everything -- all of his 'space' -- which to AK means a lot, he's a long-time bachelor. Disintegrated by the rising sun A rolling black out of oblivion And I'd like to think that I'm your number 1 These are also beautiful phrases; I think he is describing waking up to reality, but that ultimately he is oblivious to the obstacles in their relationship, and that he loves her anyway. I wanna leave but I just get stuck A broken record runnin' low on luck There's heavy metal coming from your truck Again, he's describing how he wants to leave the relationship because of all the obstacles, but he keeps getting 'stuck' because he loves her. The "broken record" is a reference to him, how he keeps entering these difficult relationships. The "heavy metal" is a reference to Heather, who likes that music. We could all go down to Malibu and make some noise Coca Cola doesn't do the justice She enjoys We could all come up with Something new to be destroyed We could all go down Again, this is about Heather, who might like indulgences other than Coca Cola. But again, he knows that he might be getting into something that might not work out -- hence "We could all come up with something new to be destroyed, We could all go down" ... I love the feeling when it falls apart I'm slow to finish but I'm quick to start Beneath the heather lies the meadowlark This is my favorite verse. AK is a romantic. He loves the feeling of falling in love, of "falling apart". He's slow to finish relationships but he starts them quickly. And beneath the Heather lies the meadowlark -- well that's him happily singing under his girl, the Chili Pepper meadowlark. This is a beautiful telling of his love story with Heather. |
Red Hot Chili Peppers – 21st Century Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Oral sex and bird migration? I love Anthony Kiedis but sometimes he really outdoes himself with bad lyrics. Thankfully John Fru saves the day with a guitar solo that fuzzes up my brain like Alka Seltzer. |

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Don't Forget Me Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I read somewhere that this song was written for John Fru, when he was deep in addiction, describing the lures of his addiction (something which AK would know very well) and how AK was concerned for him, hence "You're not alone, I'll be there, tell me when you want to go" -- "go" meaning to rehab. I love that the first chorus is followed by a spell-blinding guitar solo that expresses how JF would be feeling at the time: spinning spinning spinning shivering. Pure expression through music. But the song is so much better because AK has written the lyrics from so many perspectives -- as an addict, as a recovering addict, as someone removed and wanting to help, as someone who continually struggles with temptation. It is absolutely brilliant and one of my top 5 favorite RHCP songs. I also love it because it's part of AK's ongoing love letter to JF. Purple Stain, This Velvet Glove, The Zephyr Song, Savior, Minor Thing, Road Trippin', this song ... some of RHCP's best songs refer to JF in some way or another. Now he's gone but the songs remain. Am wondering if AK feels weird performing these songs and singing lyrics about his departed favorite subject. Maybe not. Who knows. |
Everything But the Girl – Fascination Lyrics | 13 years ago |
aah, one of the best songs ever, lyrically, musically, and her voice in this one, it soars. And to think she was so young at the time. |
Warpaint – Beetles Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This is my favorite Warpaint song, it's immediate and stream-of-consciousness, and the way Theresa Wayman sings it is so raw. I have kids and I so have been where she was in this song. |

John Frusciante – Anne Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I think this song is about John's ambivalent feelings about fame. Yes I think 'Anne' is John himself, and he's saying that although he tried to hide from fame, it found him again. He refers to his drug addiction ('I just forget what's up and what's down'.. 'I left my body') but then adds 'There's no regret' -- this can also refer to his choice to rejoin the music industry ('The Gods of the City'). But he still feels something is not quite right, that he's not completely being himself, that all these other people care about his talent more than he does ('It means more to them than it means to me somehow'). The 'careless angels' can be the record label, 'feeding' off his talent. The last verse is the most telling. 'These are the times I was scared of, these are the fares I pushed out of my way'. He tried to escape fame once, in his early 20s, but now he's back in the thick of things, perhaps feeling like he's lost his way (hence he is the 'loser' in the last line). Now that he's left the Chili Peppers, this song resonates with me even more -- to me, it seems he has been wanting to leave the limelight for a long time, but stays with the band out of love for them, out of loyalty, out of wanting to play music and have it be heard by the world. But definitely he has always been conflicted, and this song illustrates his dilemma. Which is so sad, because I love this man and want him to make music for us forever. |
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Dosed Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This is about Anthony's ex-girlfriend Johanna. He says in his book 'Scar Tissue' that many of the songs on 'By the Way' is about their failing relationship. He loved her madly but eventually ended the relationship because they fought all the time, she was very possessive and nothing he did seemed to make her feel secure. A lot of the lyrics are very self-explanatory. I think the 'canyon' means Laurel Canyon in LA, which is where he may have lived at the time. When he says, 'Take it away, I never had it anyway', I think he means that the relationship was doomed from the beginning. 'Way upon the mountain where she died' may be referring to a place where they broke up. Anthony writes about drug addiction a lot but I don't think this is one of those songs. |
