Dispatch – The General Lyrics 2 years ago
This song has a lovely psychiatry/therapy feel, especially if based on what he sings over and over again at the end of the song: "Go now you are forgiven".

In that sense, the soldiers could be viewed as pawns, following the norms of society. Even though it is something as harmful as war, they are just doing what "society" (the general) is telling them to do.

So, the general has the epiphany, realizing he no longer wants his men to contribute to this horrific part of humanity and grants them permanent leave.

It's cool that the general upholds his duty and still fights to certain death. It's a hell of a statement to make to his superiors, and to society. And a beautiful apology to the mothers of his previously fallen troops.

Many youngsters get caught up in that. Caught up in doing what they feel is right because of what they learned from their teachers, parents, military superiors, etc.

Some of my regrets and mistakes as a kid were based on these perceptions that I had formed from ideals, customs, traditions, governments, etc. Basically, I got caught up in trying to be what society wanted me to be. Listening to this song helps me forgive myself for some of those mistakes.

The excuse (for lack of a better word) that they were "merely freshman" is super valid... most everyone does dumb stuff when they're young. In that sense, I feel this song is very therapeutic for someone who is having a hard time forgiving themself for something they deeply regret doing as a youngster. Love how passionately he sings this one.

(Sandy) Alex G – After Ur Gone Lyrics 4 years ago
This song reminds me of my ex-girlfriend. She never had much of a support system. Anger, violence, alcoholism and drug addiction runs rampant in her family. She's amazingly smart, funny, and a social butterfly... though she's doing drugs now and likely to "check out early". She really didn't stand much of a chance with her shitty upbringing. I have this recurring thought of bringing a boombox to her after-funeral gathering and playing this song. Fucked up I know. Anyway, good song good band. That's probably not what Alex G was going for but that's what this song makes me think about.

Degenerate Love Song. I feel like the mood of the lyrics is similar to Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus.
(Sandy) Alex G was lights out live!

Phosphorescent – The Quotidian Beasts Lyrics 5 years ago
Seems like cheated on his girlfriend. He only party blames himself, maybe so he won’t feel so shitty about what he did. He puts most of the blame on “the beast”, which could be hormones, a drunken state, ego, the vixen’s seductive nature, etc. Everybody has the instinct to rationalize things in their head to make themselves feel better.

Trampled by Turtles – Victory Lyrics 5 years ago
Wonderful tune.
I feel the narrator has met (and fell in love with) a girl who is still heart broken from her last relationship.
It's upsetting that she is in such a bad state, but at the same time, if she hadn't gone through the break-up, then he may never have had the opportunity to meet her.
So although he has empathy for her broken heart, he points out that the break-up was a blessing in disguise, because it led them to each other.
"the life that came from you to me could never be wrong"

Def agree with colterangel... pretty much hit the nail on the head.
and to me the line "i don't mind sentimental girls at time, miss dont walk away" is Caleb speaking directly to the fans circa 2003/2004 who supported KOL's early music but became less supportive with their increasing popularity.
I'd like to think of that line as KOL making peace with the fact that they can't please everyone (most important of all... the fans who were there from the beginning) and saying... "we understand if you're upset but hope we don't lose you as a fan... so you can enjoy our new music"

and lemme just state for the record that i fuckn love KOL man. in middle school i remember listening to led zeppelin nonstop wishing i couldve lived back then and gone to their concerts. being Generation Y we didnt get to experience rock n roll like they did in the 60s and 70s. but following KOL and going to their concerts has been the next best thing to me

the entire album is a metaphor for a destructive relationship. he is the caretaker. the roles are reversed in this song, and she just up and leaves, even though he took care of her when she was in the same position. it is sad because he realizes if he were in her shoes she would not do the same for him.
