Phantogram – Don't Move Lyrics 11 years ago
I agree with you as well, except for my interpretation on the chorus. I felt that the shaking was a way to stay awake or to remind her that she is alive, and he's telling her not to move so she will calm down.

Regina Spektor – Small Town Moon Lyrics 11 years ago
Having grown up in a small town this song kills me.

I think this song is about a young adult that maybe went to college, or left home after high school. No matter how much they try to get away, they still end up thinking about home and eventually end up coming back. I feel like the speaker is trying to rationalize leaving by saying they are young and need to experience adventures, but others in town are saying that there's no rush to leave home, and that people out in the world aren't nice like the folks they grew up with and know.

The final plea, "how can I leave without hurting everyone that made me?" is so tragic. They can't experience personal growth in the small confines of their town, but they know if they try and move on, they are upsetting and letting down all the people that have helped shaped them in their life. It's just so beautiful to see Regina write this story of all the feelings of growing up and moving on from their unimportant little town existence. I can completely relate.

Regina Spektor – How Lyrics 11 years ago
"Time can come and take away the pain
But I just want my memories to remain
To hear your voice
To see your face
There's not one moment I'd erase
You are a guest here now"

This kills me every time I hear it. It's just so sweet how she's saying that she wants to remember their time together, even after she gets over him, and how she doesn't regret it. I feel like the last line is kind of sad though. You are a guest, taking over my thoughts for now, but eventually someone else will fill those needs and become a permanent resident.

I agree with llamas though. Anyone could have written this song, and it's different from a lot of what we've seen from Regina, but I think that kind of makes it special. This is my first time getting that R'n'B feel. Even though it's generic, she's executed it so well. I can't stop listening to it. :)

Regina Spektor – Firewood Lyrics 11 years ago
I'm not sure I fully buy into the song being about depression/suicide. I think it's about love and life. I actually think it's optimistic, rather than sad. I cried the first time I heard it because of it's beautiful words and message.

It starts by talking about good times and remembering those (waltzing and dancing). It moves to talking about when things go wrong, and how you have to find the will within yourself to try and live.

Next, it talks about things becoming bad and having to use the piano as firewood. The piano is a beautiful metaphor for the author's desperation. For me (and I imagine like many musicians, Regina included), the act of breaking apart a piano and burning it is horrific. I think she's trying to say that things in life have not gotten bad enough that you have to cut your losses and part with the things you love (or you doesn't have to use the piano as firewood), but soon it might come to that. And if it does, you will have your friends alongside you.

She continues, by telling people to stop judging, because they don't fully understand what someone is going through. Then she explains that in life we get hurt and upset, but it's better to get hurt in any situation because you are trying to do good (for yourself or others, such as in love), rather than not trying or being apathetic.

She continues to warn us that if we hold on to our past mistakes and regrets that life will pass us by. We won't realize it until it's too late, and by that point there's nothing to do but cry.

The last verse I feel is the most powerful. She's saying that if we take the time to appreciate what we have and to love, we will live a more fulfilling life. She concludes with the notion that we put ourselves through the pain of relationships and love, because it's better to have experienced it than not. We do it even though we know it can hurt and we will cry, but that is true living: having passion and love, rather than being apathetic to life and wasting away (dying).

I also read that last verse as if my Mom was reassuring me after a bad break-up, "You may feel terrible now, but this terrible feeling will go away. You're going to find someone you truly love, and you'll put yourself out there again, even though it may be painful, because it's worth it."

From this viewpoint, I think it's clear that Regina is definitely taking a more optimistic looks on life rather than gloomy ones, but that's just my opinion.

Is it possible that someone could write the Russian out how it's supposed to be pronounced? I'm trying to learn this song and every time I find the lyrics, it's never written phonetically, and I can't read Russian.

Regina Spektor – Field Below Lyrics 13 years ago
When I first heard the song, I thought it was more about the loss and death of a friend, like most of the second verse, and especially because of the bluesiness of the piano.

"i wish i'd see your face below
i wish i'd hear you whispering low
but you don't live downtown no more
and everything must come and go"

But the more that i look at it now, it seems to reflect her longing for a love.

"and darkness spreads over the snow
like ancient bruises
i'm awake and feel the ache
but i wish i'd see a field below..."

the 1st line seems to talk about New York, and how she feels (darkness=sad obviously). the 2nd, maybe referring to this happening before like him leaving her before but they got back together, or the idea of hurting because of a lost love. the 3rd seems to talk about losing sleep over it all. 4th seems to mean she wants to get away, either somewhere more peaceful and simple, or just to isolate herself.

regardless, this song is so beautiful, the words, her singing, and even the piano. i love it!
