Joy Division – New Dawn Fades Lyrics 3 years ago
This song seems like a conceptualization of the downward spiral that occurs in the depressed mind.

The first verse depicts positive thinking as a means of overcoming his troubled mind.

The thoughts gradually turn to negativity starting with “still occupied, though you forget”. He’s saying these changes and distractions can only divert the mind for so long.

“Different colors different shades,
Over each mistakes were made,
I took the blame”
The first line continues the transition to negativity. He even finds faults in the changes in scenery that he created and blames himself.

By the third verse, he’s completely preoccupied by his tragic thinking and even addresses his suicidal ideation.

In the fourth verse, he continues his downward spiral of negativity and transitions to his fixation on his failed relationships. This topic is continued in the final verse where he recognizes that his relationship problems are really just a manifestation of his internal conflict.

Horse the Band – Big Blue Violence Lyrics 4 years ago
This song is so freaking cool. Clearly about a near death experience that changed him. If the lyrics are to be taken literally, he almost drowned to death.

“Thought I’d say dying black, but I saw burning red”
-instead of everything going black like expected, he saw red. Burning red could be interpreted as anger rather than peace.

This juxtaposition of anger/“full speed anticipation” and peace/“twilight drives pacify” is reflected throughout the song both musically and lyrically. During the slow breakdown, it seems to reflect that moment in near death experiences where the person accepts their fate and everything slows down.

“I came back different”
-something about this line is so evocative. In a literal sense, it shows that this near death experience changed his perspective. But I interpret this whole song as a display of how trauma and adversity change you. Doesn’t have to be near death. My cat just died at 5, my poor little baby and his last year of suffering as I tried to save him was horrifying for me. His death also brought peace to him and myself cause I don’t have to worry about him anymore. This song has brought me some comfort even though I know it has nothing to do with this. The power of good music...

Isis – So Did We Lyrics 4 years ago
I love how everyone gets something different from these two short stanzas.

To me, it’s about how the earth and nature was once in harmony (forest green and azure skies). As humans evolved and advanced with technology (the years they passed, and so did we) we threw off this balance (crashed upon the earth) and have become ticks to the planet. Eventually, the earth will no longer be hospitable to us (resistance would be brought).

Pig Destroyer – Strangled With A Halo Lyrics 6 years ago
I have to go into more detail b/c these lyrics are just too incredible and poignant.

“Religion in the corner of my eye”
Introduces the protagonist as a kid who is vaguely religious (it is implied that he was simply raised that way in the last line)

“A peeping tom and a hole in the sky,
The last stall on the left as our makeshift confession booth, your parents will never know, stalked by child’s nightmare, the promise of serpents in the tall grass”
The child is raped

“Mother I’ve been raped in the shadow of a watchtower”
The kid feels betrayed by the god that he was raised to believe would protect him.

“Strangled With A Halo”
Betrayed by religion

the mirrors break
now i've lost everything
the pieces collect about me
-he's upset with himself

despite my effort
only i can be nothing
-explains why he's upset

all i see are opaque expressions
-he can't connect with anyone

and more depression
-because he's detached from everyone, he perceives the people around him to be depressed like he is (or maybe they really are depressed)

staring into glassy eyes
-further describes the opaque expressions

all is lost for compromise
-when you can't achieve your goals, you tell yourself to compromise

all i see are opaque expressions
live for incision
-since he thinks everyone is depressed, he's saying people live for incision or self harm

they fade
i watch them fade away
-he's becoming more and more distant from people

seaweeds like emerald veins, she sleeps beneath the breaking waves
-talking about the sea

a silent dying ocean's slow defeat
-humans have been severely polluting the ocean over the past few centuries

the floods will rise
-the sea/mother nature will (hopefully) get revenge and wipe out humanity

an end to all this quarrel
-referring to wars/conflicts

a final grace to rid her grief, oh mother show no mercy for me
-the "final grace" being the flood, the singer even admits he's to blame

wash the stains away, come unto me again, open yourself beneath us all swallow, purge the soil, burn the surface, erase the past again
-i think he says "again" because of the story of the flood in the bible. the next verse is a bit more cryptic but open for interpretation

i am my brother's keeper
-talking about the earth

"a burden to keep though their inner communion,

I think this part is from the parents perspective. It explains why they confine the mentally challenged boy to the yard. Instead of accepting their son and wanting him to be happy, they see him as nothing but an inconvenience...a story of selfishness and incredible sadness.

I think this song is about people who prey on his emotions. He says that he going through difficult times, and "that's where they wait" for him. The only way he sees to get his feet on the ground and get them out of his head is "burning them alive".

Saosin – They Perched on Their Stilts, Pointing and Daring Me to Break Custom Lyrics 8 years ago
clearly about the pressures of being a musician.

"on my face ive hidden away any embarrassment, away from my acquaintances"
songwriters are constantly making music and when you are around youre friends or other people it becomes difficult to hide this fact. anthony wants to hide the fact because there is an unfortunate stigma against people who are frontmen of "screamo" bands

"im not sold on anything but half a dream"
all he wants is to be a famous musician, but thinks it a far-fetched idea

"i see a blank notebook page, and it's my life and there is nothing i can think to write
im not sensing a thing"
further supports my claim as he describes the strain of being a struggling songwriter

"i hope you don't see a thing, smile through everyone you ever see"
my favorite line. when you write music in your head, it is very distracting and takes a lot of focus. when people notice this, anthony feels the need to continue the illusion that he is not trying to write music

goddamn i love this song

KoЯn – Make Me Bad Lyrics 8 years ago
"i am watching the rise and fall of my salvation, there's so much shit around me, such a lack of compassion"
clearly about living in depravity

"I thought it would be fun and games, instead it's all the same"
now talking about a sexual relationship. fun and games as in being sexually depraved but the girls all want the same thing (im thinking commitment)

"i want something to do, i need to feel the sickness in you"
more sex/depravity talk

"i feel the reason as it's leaving me no not again, it's quite deceiving as i'm feeling the flesh make me bad"
he feels the innate sexual depravity and cant grasp why he is this way

"what does it mean to you? for me it's something i just do"
talking to a girl about sex

"i want something, i need to feel the sickness in you"
he needs sex because it brings him happiness and i think the depravity part is because sex is one of the only thing that brings him happiness

"does it make me bad?"
questions if his sexual addiction is bad and if it will really be the end of his salvation

so yeah, the song is basically about sexual depravity

Rise Against – Ready To Fall Lyrics 9 years ago
The meaning to this song is pretty clear to me. It is about considering suicide, and how a friend helped him through these hard times.

The pre chorus and chorus are the most direct evidence that this song is about considering suicide. The lyrics here can be taken as a metaphor or as literally standing at the top of a building and thinking about jumping off.

The first verse is from the point of view of a female friend who has just learned of his unhappiness and convinces him that she is there for him. In the next verse, it is from the point of view of the depressed person who describes his discomfort as "perpetual movement, the image won't focus, a blur is all that's seen". He then explains how this female friend's encouragement has given him "a shoulder to lean on" and "an infallible reason to live all by itself".

System of a Down – Chop Suey! Lyrics 9 years ago
The song meaning is pretty clear to me but can differ slightly depending on your perspective. The verses describe the actions of a person who is not in control of his or her own life. The shortcomings described in the verses are examples of what can lead to suicide. "creating another fable" is a way for the person to compensate for his or her shortcomings. system of a down is saying that these problems are the persons own doing with the repeated line "you wanted to". basically, if you cannot maintain control of your own life, it is your fault and no one else's. don't create fables or come up with excuses. we are all one of gods angels, treat life like the gift it is, otherwise angels deserve to die.

Greeley Estates – Bodies Lyrics 9 years ago
The song tells the story of being ashamed of something, having it be exposed, and how religion helped him through this experience.

"do you ever feel like you've been sentenced to death and there's no way out?"
possibly one of my favorite lines ever symbolizes the emotional strain from having your deepest buried secrets exposed. This is supported by "turns out they found the bodies, the bodies in my floor" as he is equating his struggle to one that has been convicted of murder.

"put those handcuffs on me, but don't be the first to throw a stone"
one of my favorite lines from the bible (not that I know very many) is 'let he who is without sin throw the first stone' when people asked jesus if they should stone a "sinner" to death. so the line is basically saying, yes i have done something to be ashamed of, but everyone makes mistakes. The concept of forgiveness in religion is very important to him, hence, "god came down".

the guitar, drumming, and ambient effects are breathtaking and create a powerful atmosphere that is only bolstered by these incredible lyrics. greeley estates can so insightful, it is a real shame that they have stayed under the radar for so long

Three Days Grace – (I Hate) Everything About You Lyrics 9 years ago
at first i thought this song was about your average guy/girl relationship, and the lyrics were just average. but when i listened deeper (prob on my 100th time), i realized this song is more related to the next song on the album, Home. the song is about with someone, a parent or a girlfriend but i think parent makes more sense when you listen to it in this context.

every feeling that i get
but i haven't missed you yet

after a fight, the singer is saying that he is mixed with emotions but doesn't miss the person/care about the person. therefore, "when [he] stops to think about it" he hates everything about this person so why does he love him or feel like he should love them. obviously this is not a good relationship

Norma Jean – Falling From The Sky: Day Seven Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this song is about growing up. The verses are from the point of view of a father figure / older person that is trying to help, and the chorus is the point of view of younger, more naive person. The death that Norma Jean writes about shouldn't be taken literally, more as someones downfall.
"do you think the saints are just lying?"
-the wiser person is saying that the values written in the bible are important (you shouldn't steal, be gluttonous, or give in to vices in general).
"just because I understand, doesn't mean I really care"
-I think this line says a lot about todays generation. We see terrible things happen to ourselves and others and just let it happen...It is so easy growing up in a first world country that apathy has become standard and caring about things that should be important is put second to our own, selfish desires.
"falling from the sky, day one. you never learned to fly"
-maybe the younger person just got out of a bad relationship or went to college or was faced with some sort of conflict. Because he never listened to the older person and was only concerned with himself, he never learned to deal with conflicts, and it becomes the downfall of him. You find out the most about yourself when you are at your lowest point or sank "to the bottom of the ocean" as Norma Jean would put it. This is why they write "you will have all of the answers soon my friend".

The song is beautifully written, and I am not religious, but a song like this reminds me why religion can be so wonderful. There are a lot of great lessons that the bible teaches that are applicable to modern life. All of the references to christianity in this song really exemplify this too me.

The Used – Pretty Handsome Awkward Lyrics 10 years ago
I'm not sure if the singer is gay or not but it would explain the chorus and name of the song pretty well. I think this is your standard relationship song about a guy Bert was banging, and it didn't work out. "handsome awkward" explains this well as the handsome part explains why he is in a relationship with the dude and the awkward/pretty low explains why it didn't work out. lovely song. Favorite line is "your dream vacation is my hostage refuge"=/

Greeley Estates – Mother Nature Is A Terrorist Lyrics 10 years ago
To me, this song is about the acceptance of death and love of life. In all of the lines, he is talking to mother nature and the clouds are a metaphor for death. I think "calling me...to join her again" refers to how we are all a part of nature and this becomes most evident when we die and literally become a part of nature. I love the line "she's so lovely, as she kills me". I think this says life is a beautiful thing and enjoy it because we all die one day. One of the best songs I've ever heard and unfortunately, like a lot of great greeley songs, it is terribly underrated.

System of a Down – Peephole Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this song is about a bad trip. I will explain this by interpreting the most repeated phrase: "don't ever get stuck in the sky...when you're high". If you've ever tripped, it becomes bad (at least for me) when you get "stuck" thinking about something that is either confounding or depressing. In my case, I was stuck thinking about how "my life is tried", or meaningless. This caused me to be detached from reality (stuck in the sky) not just for the full duration of the trip (6 hours! :0), but for several months afterwards; Therefore, I can certainly see why SOAD would write a song warning people not to get stuck in the sky when you're high...

Norma Jean – A Small Spark Vs. a Great Forest Lyrics 10 years ago
I remember when I was in high school, and my friends were harassing me. People can be so cruel...one day they are your friends and the next they can be spreading rumors and making fun of you. The lyrics are so incredibly expressive: "restless and full of poison, shattered by a sea of dialogue". This is exactly how I felt. I remember thinking "fight fair", like with your fists rather than with words because words hurt me so much more. I think this is what the song is about. How words seem so small and harmless, but they can set your whole world on fire. Hence, A Small Spark Vs A Great Forest.

Papa Roach – Snakes Lyrics 10 years ago
snakes = a metaphor for gangs/criminals (or just bad people in general). The song is about Jacoby's hatred for these thugs/gang members. This makes a lot of sense as he grew up without much money and likely in the ghetto.

"I got a problem with the snakes that are crawling
Through my area when the darkness has fallen"
-gangs and criminals mostly operate at night

"Momma told me that they love to bite"
-parents are always advising their kids to avoid gangs and criminal activity because they are dangerous....like a snakes bite

"They'll stab you in the back, no shame that's right, what, what?
I keep my distance cause they're making me crazy
And stealing from me, you know those fuckers are lazy
My blood boils fat turns to oil"
-displays his distain towards criminals

"Step the fuck back, or you'll get buried in soil
Over drama, or you could sleep with the fishes
My clutches are tight and I'll take your last wishes
One for the money, two for your girl
Three for your life now I fucked up your world"
-describes the mindset of a gang member or thug: killing and stealing without boundaries

The chorus reemphasizes Jacoby's hatred for criminals, and the second verse is another perfect description of the mind of a gang member. These lyrics are far superior to anything that Papa Roach has ever written. Of course, Last Resort gets all the publicity, yet songs like Snakes and Revenge are what really deserve the attention on Infest.

System of a Down – Mr. Jack Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is either about a drug dealer or an illegal immigrant and his family. Either way, the song is certainly bashing the cops.

drug dealer:
"is that the mouthwash in your eyes"
-cops making fun of him because his eyes are so red (prob from smoking the ganj)
"is that the cause of your surprise?"
-again making fun of him, clearly he is surprised because the cops just busted him but the cops are being the stereotypical dicks that they are
"you're nothing like me"
-cops tend to believe that criminals are scum and inhuman and thus the drug dealers anger at the police (fuck you pigs!)

immigration (I think this makes more sense):
"hey Mr. Jack, is that the trick of your disguise"
-illegal immigrants typically change their names to avoid authority
"seven am, morning came to take US away"
-the plural, us, makes me believe that it is a family who is possibly living in their car on the side of the freeway. the police have come to take them away from the states and back where they came from. it doesn't really make sense to bust a drug dealer early in the morning but it makes perfect sense for a family of immigrants.
"your nothing like me"
-the classic american belief that immigrants are inferior and our desire to kick them out or lock them up is justified

such an amazing song. the buildup is incredible and really emphasizes the anti-police theme to the song. i fucking love soad.....

System of a Down – Needles Lyrics 10 years ago
To me, this song is about how we all have vices (tapeworms/needles) that hinder us. We wear out these vices until they "eat the last of [us]" and we find ourselves sitting in a room with the needle (vice) in our hand waiting to die. Whether it is drugs, food, tv, video games….anything is okay in moderation. But when people become consumed by their vices, I think SOAD is saying it is the same thing as waiting for your tomb.

It could just be about the video game, but birdo certainly has a deeper meaning, and at first glance, it also appears to just be about a video game.

Miss May I – Forgive and forget Lyrics 10 years ago
To me, this song is about drugs and the drawbacks that come with them.

"time spent searching for the world" = drug use. The singer is "Wanted" because doing drugs is illegal.

"I receive all I ever dream for, In return all is taken away"
I can do all the drugs I want, but now I realize there are consequences...

"I remember everything before tonight"
a clear reference to drug use and the common memory loss effect

"These illusions that life is so clear, Have been cleansed from my thoughts"
the idea that reality or point of view are constant and as simple as they appear has been altered after drug use

"Floating branches are the only things, Truly connected to the ground"
a non-sequitor, almost something that a high person would think, an unreasonable thought

The rest is sort of self explanatory, and I don't feel like going into it, but Miss May I are some of the most underrated lyricists. Their lyrics aren't always clear, but they contain strong messages.
