I would like to think that Theo is right, this song is him beginning to write the album, he takes the pill/alcohol to numb himself a bit."and down there in the dark I can see the real truth about me.
as clear as day, lord if I make it through tonight
then I will mend my ways and walk the straight path to the end of my days", I think that bit means that he's going to look inside himself and see how he really feels about his step dad dying. If he can make it through the night without still feeling anger or resentment towards him then he'll become a new man and forgive him. I think "pale green things" suggests that he had forgiven his dad by the end of the night. |

As tragic as your life sounds like it's been I think you're right. Don't people normally drink at night which could explain the "work all night if you have to" line, The step dad would be out and it's the only time they could be together, but when he comes back he takes control and they're put down on all fours (Completely under his abusive control). "When the cherry ripens" is maybe when he's old enough to leave the house? I know that's the basic point of "this year", also from that album |

I would say that maybe the "grabbing him by his tooth" would be kind of equal to confronting him about the most dangerous things, What I mean is your not going to go to a lion and grabs it's tooth in the same way John isn't going to go and properly confront his step dad about the abuse, but he does it anyway. Maybe his step dad reacted badly and locked him inside the car with him, trying to beat him (arms start to ache, palms start to sweat, begin to cry). His mother and sister come out to try and help but there's nothing they can do as the stepdad is relatively more powerful than John, why else would the police need to blowtorch the door open if it wasn't locked? Maybe this is referencing the police bit in "dance music" |

I would agree with everyone that says it's a song about escaping, I think that's pretty obvious, I think that the "cathy" is the same girl from "dance music" and that song is also about escaping from reality. This song is just him realising that no matter what he does he still has that year left before he can truely be free. |

I'd say that the second verse is about an alcoholic girlfriend who in turns causes him to turn to alcoholism (Maybe Kathy that was mentioned in "this year", he says they exchange swigs from a bottle), I'd say he followed her down the alcoholic road and the "let me down" bit is maybe a police intervention or an arrest or something? |

Special Secret Sickness is alcoholism but I wouldn't say it was based around his mum, I'd say it was a girlfriend that he followed into drink (maybe Kathy from "this year"? he mentions drinking whiskey in that song when he was seventeen). Either way he begins to drink with this girlfriend and gets caught up in the general alcoholism lifestyle and the "let me down" bit is maybe a police intervention or something? That's what I'm thinking |
