Cake – Italian Leather Sofa Lyrics 13 years ago
Actually, I have to disagree with you on that. There's a emphasis placed on her "healthy breasts that bounce" - which would be a reference to what he enjoys about her - watching her breasts bounce while he ... enjoys himself.

Marian Call – Good Old Girl Lyrics 13 years ago
Pretty certain that this is the mechanic Kaylee (from the television show Firefly) singing about her ship, Serenity. What I really love about this song it that it gives her such a personality that you can think it's about any old girl that doesn't know when to quit.

Marian Call – Vera Flew The Coop Lyrics 13 years ago
Saw Marian at her Philly show. She calls this her obligatory "murder ballad".
This is the story of the Vera that Jayne (from the tv show Firefly) named his gun after.

Cake – Italian Leather Sofa Lyrics 13 years ago
I loved this for the poetry reference, actually.
Pretty cut and dried - this is a picture of a trophy wife who is perfectly happy with exchanging sex for the status and money of being associated with a rich and powerful man. I find it amusing that this song doesn't actually feel very negative about them - both the man and the woman seem to be just fine with the arrangement - so why should we care?
As for the serrated edge - let's be clear, a serrated edge has teeth. It's the type you'd find on a bread knife, and it works pretty much the way they describe it in the song. (As such, it would be completely useless for cocaine and also would bear little resemblance to any part of female anatomy or masturbatory device.) As "she's got" this serrated edge, I'm confident that it means her methods of manipulating the relationship so that she gets exactly what she wants out of it. But that's ok - the chorus implies that the man gets exactly what he wants out of it, as well. :)

Razor blades are not serrated. A serrated edge has teeth and would be COMPLETELY useless to cut up cocaine.

I think she's only a prostitute in the sense that she's with him for the money - not in that she's actually getting paid for sex, specifically.

I assume that English is not your first language. An island is land completely surrounded by a body of water.

Dude - a razor blade is NOT serrated. A serrated edge is the type you find on a bread knife - it has ridges.

Cake – Take It All Away Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's a snapshot of an argument.
He's yelling - go, go, take everything and get out of here... and as the anger's expressed and he says that it's too late, she breaks down... And he still really does care, so he backs off and asks about her, but it might be too late by now...

Cake – Carbon Monoxide Lyrics 13 years ago
I usually like to hear this after "Waiting For the Bus" by Violent Femmes and "Another One Rides the Bus" by Weird Al. :)

To me, the bit about the Mercedes Benz shows up our hypocrisy. When we're stuck out in the pollution, all we want to do is be out of it - but being out of it means that we're making more for others. It's too tough - maybe impossible for the individual - to break the cycle, so it goes on and on.

Cake – Pentagram Lyrics 13 years ago
Y'all might need a class in remedial verbal irony. :) I don't think this particular song has anything to do with relationships.

Pentagrams, naked sacrificial rites, ashes of dead babies, evil eyes, silver and turquoise jewelry are all stereotypical trappings of satanism - which is easily confused with wicca and other pagan religions by people who really don't care about getting "evil things" right. They're using the ridiculousness of this misinterpretation to make the point that most people that follow a religion - even Christians - go through the trappings and don't understand why they're doing these rituals - they do them because they were told that they were the right thing to do.

Although, if you're dead set on the relationship thing, those rituals would include the marriage ritual. But I still don't think the dead babies have anything to do with it.

Finally - I think it's truly amusing and very subtle that they've made this a bluegrass tune. The root of the word pagan is paganus - which means "from the country", and bluegrass music is from the country.

Cake – Dime Lyrics 13 years ago
A dime is $0.10USD, so yeah, you really can't buy much with it. It's also the physically smallest of the American coins. There's also an undertone of devaluation that you may miss if you're not familiar with American currency - at one point, a dime WAS enough to buy clothing or make a phone call.

It's also relatively common to find them laying around. So, I don't really think that the implication is that this person is particularly left-behind or unnoticed. I think they're saying that there are lots of people out there, but a diamond in the rough is still just a bit too rare. A dime - well, they can add up, or just be pretty by themselves.

This is on my "Songs to Smirk By" playlist, because it always makes me smile.
