Parliament – Flash Light Lyrics 10 years ago
Wrong.

The comic book inside the album cover tells the whole thing explicitly.

Super-villain Sir Nose D'voidofunk (devoid of funk) terrorizes the ghetto. He might be a pimp. He carries a sawed-off shotgun and hides behind a mask. Starchild comes down from space to change people like him and make them happy instead of being tough during the day and crying alone all night.

Starchild is Clinton himself, and that's how he sees himself when he brings music to the people. Liberating them from their own fear and need to put on a tough thug persona for his victims in the neighborhood.

Flashlight plays after starchild shoots 2 cool 4 u Sir Nose with the bop gun. It transforms him into experiencing his primary feelings instead of strutting around intimidating people.

Earlier in the album, Nose says "I will never dance." Well, he's a dancing mutha fuckah NOW, and the whole room is looking at him make a spectacle of himself.

Of course, that's why they shot him with the bop gun: to make him happy, like they are. To make him feel and dance and remember who he is so he can have fun in this life.

Flashlights, spot lights, neon lights, they're all aimed at Nose. No more hiding his feelings behind his long-nose mask now! "Ho-ho, look at him go!"

It's like Pink Floyd: "since, my friend, you have revealed your deepest fears, I sentence you to be exposed before your peers." And like in the Wall album, what he feared most is what liberated him.

At clinton's concerts, every single person in the audience holds up a lit flashlight, and the entire place is suddenly full of light.

And we all danced, bathed in the lights that surrounded us.

That is so not true that either you posted this for the wrong song or you think it's funny to put random crap at songlyrics.

Note that you never mention the song name or anything in it.

The Crazy World of Arthur Brown – Fire Lyrics 10 years ago
The copyrighted words at the end are "I'll take you to learn", but that was only so the repressed, 1950s-type people wouldn't cause problems with the real last line, which is "I'll take you to bed". That's how it's listed at many lyrics sites, and it's also _obviously_ what he's saying when you listen to the song.

Being careful about a reference to sex may sound ridiculous to you now, but I assure you that then, fear and sexual repression were the centerpieces of the dominant American culture, and it was a very big deal. Couples on TV shows slept in separate beds. The word "sex" was never, ever used in public. The old-culture people even burned piles of vinyl records just because they referred to raw animal passion, which they had been told was sin from Satan and hell.

The last word in the last line matters because the song is about a guy with a young girl.

You've been living like a little girl
In the middle of your little world

Fire represents the uncontrollable sexual insanity that suddenly overwhelms our brain when we're a teenager. Our mind is no longer in primary control, furious animal lust is.

He's about to release burning passion in her that she never even knew existed. She will learn what she really is, and everything will change.

The singer says it's something that should have happened to her already, like it has everyone else. But her mind, afraid of being overwhelmed and overthrown, hasn't allowed herself to see it.

And your mind, your tiny mind
You know you've really been so blind
Now's your time, burn your mind
You're falling far too far behind

Not just her attitude and experience will change, but who and (most of all) what she is will change—forever. All her achievements as a little girl (like making her parents happy by getting good grades) won't matter anymore, because something else will.

You've fought hard and you saved and earned,
But all of it's going to burn.

The singer tells her (correctly) that being fucked for the first time will be like waking up from a dream: everything she was, she won't be anymore.

Fire, to destroy all you've done
Fire, to end all you've become

The little girl life she had won't matter now, because she'll no longer be a little girl. She'll learn something new that will matter instead.

And he's going to "teach" it to her.

Fire, I'll take you to burn.
Fire, I'll take you to learn.

After it, she will be a new, different person—freer, happier, and (sadly, perhaps) not an innocent little kid anymore.

She will become what she always was, but didn't know: a female animal.
She will learn her true purpose: to mate—and die.

Though all this is obvious when you read the lyrics (I hope), it is only undeniable when the original word is in the last line.

Fire, I'll take you to burn
Fire, I'll take you to bed

I battled the fire in me for decades. When it finally burned away the fear, I discovered that it was good and wonderful and right and fine. I fought a war with myself for my whole life, and I didn't even know I was fighting on the wrong side.

Maybe you are, too. tiny url dot com/geekassist

That's the most sensible interpretation I've read here. But do The Furs often sing about Naziism and bummers like that?

If not, then I suspect it might just be a coincidence. Without heavy analysis like yours (as impressive as it is), the song sure sounds a lot like just a love song between two people who see everyone else around them as having become emotionally flat and uncaring after the life-charged teenage time. ....You know, the only time when we're really alive and not unfeeling zombies with dust in our hearts.

"When you get old, your heart dies", and life feels like a boring dead-end. I can testify personally that that's true. Except, for some reason unknown to me, I seem to be completely immune to that sad... sickness.

The Who – Happy Jack Lyrics 11 years ago
==--
Jack is an old bearded bum, probably an alcoholic. The neighborhood kids fuck with him, but it doesn't bother him because his happiness is part of who he is; it's not contingent on what other people do or don't do.

Townsend's telling us we should be like that in song after song. In the whole albums Quadrophenia and Tommy (and many songs, like We Don't Get Fooled Again) he gives us the same message.

It took me decades to be like that. It always happens suddenly. Of all places, it happened to me while I was tied to a bench naked for three days in a stranger's basement.

It's, like, Townsend's eternal theme:

THIS
IS
WHO
I
REALLY
AM.

You got the meaning of The Rock, animecard!

Jimmy finds God, all right! He looked everywhere: in being a mod, drugs, his job, and falling in love with the girl like he was a needy puppy.

But at The Rock, he finally sees God...

The Who – The Rock Lyrics 11 years ago
It's vague in the album and even in the book that came with the album. But it's clearer in the movie.

Jimmy has completely *****HAD IT*****

He wants everything in his life to end, just f%#king end–one way or the other.

And part of him DOES end. It's symbolic instead of literal, but Jimmy kind of splits into people at the rock. The person he was drowns, but the new one lives. When he sees the rock standing so proud and strong like the monolith in 2001, he goes to it and lets his boat drift away. With no way to get back, he (symbolically) becomes part of The Rock, and it's strength becomes part of him.

He then has that moment that Richard Pryor talked about (on a kid's show!):

One day when you finally had enough of it, you just say "This is who I am, this is what I like, and this is what I'm going to be. I'm just gonna be ME, and [if someone doesn't like it,] the HELLLL with it! Take it or leave it!"

In the movie, Jimmy appears to commit suicide while The Rock is playing, but it's ambiguous. A hint is given at the end, when Jimmy is alone next to a cliff. "Love reign o'er me" is playing (for us–Jimmy can't hear it). When Daltry sings "reign o'er..." Jimmy (who's alone) screams "ME!!!" It's the only word spoken in the last 10 minutes of the film.

But when you watch it again, you notice something in the VERY first brief scene (it's maybe five seconds). Before the story starts with "I am The Sea," you see Jimmy walking away from the mess he left at the end of the film–with a confident, self-assured smile.

He didn't kill himself.

And he's not a screwed up kid anymore.

â–º The helpless dancer finally stopped dancing.

If you like Quadrophenia, you MUST see the movie!!

Yes – Siberian Khatru Lyrics 12 years ago
---==========[ MY INTERPRETATION ]===========---

This is what the song means TO ME (and only to me because it was a time when I had problems accepting that I was a sexual female animal instead of an autistic broken robot), the words are about a girl who lives isolated in a tower who wants to continue to believe that life is sad and depressing, because her parents (Cold reigning king that holds all the secrets from you) told her sex was "animalistic". Sex was the secret. In my case it was my mom. The cold, feelings-are-evil king "shelters the women that sing" ...or want to sing, if they weren't trapped in the ivory tower of intellect.

She sees the summit in the distance (the summit of existence: opening up to boys, doing it, culminating in orgasm).

When puberty happens, she tries desperately to hold down the window to keep out the morning (happiness and enthusiasm and life) that come into view.

It is something that doesn't have a name, but you can call it by a meaningless name, "the khatru". It's the same thing the black monolith represented in 2001: a space odyssey. The "khatru" comes to rescue you when you're in a cold place, even Siberia, and it makes the side of the tower warm as it approaches.

Sex is like a river that she sees coming, a flood that she can't stop, and it runs right over her head, drowning her in it's joy. (Cover, lover). As she feels all of her fear and resistance melt away, she suddenly sees herself climbing the summit, the mountain.

As one changes...

Sex feelings touch her and leave their golden mark on her soul, transforming her into being happy (Heart gold, leaver, Soul mark, mover, changer)

Free of the ivory tower, she is now climbing the mountain summit herself, and as she nears the top, wondering what awaits her there, she feels a burst of hot light from behind her, and she can see its brightness on her hands and the rock she is climbing.

She slowly turns around to face it. She is completely overwhelmed. She steps off the mountaintop, which turns out not to be where her destiny is, but only a place to meet it. Instead of falling, she soars into the sky to meet the light.

Turn round, glider.

The rest of the song is instrumental, and its repeating cycles of happiness and joy are her being fucked for the first time, getting closer and closer to orgasm--the ultimate experience, the peak and the meaning of life. The two-second guitar riff at the very end where three notes repeat very fast is her cumming, when she is absorbed into Eternity, losing her identity as an individual.

Anyone on the ground who is still sad would say that she died (presumably from old age), because we are animals and death is the flip side of sex.

See, before sex evolved, everything lived forever (as very simple animals like jellyfish). They got bigger end bigger and then split into two halves which became two individuals. But shortly after sex evolved, death did too: We have to die so we don't compete for food with our children after they too achieve puberty.

See, I knew this when I was a kid, and I didn't want to feel sex because I didn't want to be part of the cycle and die.

But really, by having sex (and eventually, children), when you lose your individual identity (during orgasm, and then death) you become part of the brilliant, white-hot infinity of never-ending life, which here is called "the heart-spoken, Siberian Khatru".

---================---

...I observe that even after all these years, thinking about the words of Siberian Khatru still makes me cry.

This song's impact on me can not possibly be understated. The images and feelings it engendered made me dedicate my life to preventing other kids, particularly smart ones who think too much, from fearing sex because it's something animals do–like dying.

Yes really.

Yes – Siberian Khatru Lyrics 12 years ago
Look people, Anderson was a good musician but a shitty lyricist. Sorry. But, to paraphrase Johnny Weissmuller in a Tarzan movie, "Faye always tell truth".

Anderson's stuff is "stream of consciousness", like bluetail --> tailfly. That comes from a song "Blue Tail Fly" which was sung by Burl Ives a lot when Anderson was a kid. "Outboard --> river. Outboard motor links to "river" in his head.

"Heart gold --> leaver --> Soul mark". Someone with a heart of gold leaves a mark on someone else's soul. Maybe. But For sure, Jon didn't want or expect people to sit down and deconstruct his lyrics because they communicate FEELING, not meaning.

Each word or two stands alone as a feeling. A lot of them have to do with freedom and optimisim and flight.

That having been said, his consciousness stream is obviously polluted by the ridiculous mythology he was infected with when he was little. My guess is that Martin Luther was the "christian changer". He caused the protestants to break with the fucked-up catholic church and form their own fucked-up church. I'd bet anything that Anderson is Lutheran.

The Guess Who – Friends Of Mine Lyrics 12 years ago
"Kurt" is Kurt Winter, band member and co-writer of their songs. Magical Mystery Tour is a Beatles album released a few years before Friends of Mine. "Kurt is the Walrus" refers to a song on that Beatles album, "I am the Walrus".

At the time, there was a lot of speculation about who was in the walrus suit on the album cover. I won't describe it here, but it was parodied in a later Beatles' song, "Glass Onion", in which Lennon says "The Walrus was Paul".

The Guess Who hung around with Niel Young before he became famous. Young looked up to Bachmann. They mainly hung around one bar that I forget the name of now. Young even played with them before they became big. Some of them used heroin, which Young swore off after a friend of his died of it. This is referenced in "Friends of Mine" and in Young's "The Needle And The Damage Done."

The original version of "Friends of Mine" is on their post-breakup compilation, This Time Long Ago. Cummings sings about "doing it with your mother" (turned into "do it with a duck") and smothering six month old babies. He was imitating Jim Morrision, BTW. RCA said no effing WAY, and they had to change it for Wheatfield Soul.

Of course here in The Future, the nee-groes sing about things like that all the time but nobody gives a damn because they're nee-groes.

The long raps about death and god in this song and "Hang on to your life" comes from Bachman's confusion about a branch of the jewish-islam-christian mythology which is obsessed with ridiculous bullshit like that. He resolved it, not by realizing that it is indeed ridiculous bullshit, but by converting to mormonism–the stupidest branch in the whole mythological tree except for islam.

In fact, that's why the Guess Who first began to break up; Bachmann kept pushing his dumb-ass religion onto the band and writing it into their lyrics.

Nevertheless, if you listen to the words as sounds, they sound really good, even important. And if you listen to the FEELINGS behind the words in Friends of Mine and Hang on to your Life instead of the literal meanings, the religious references are even poignant, because mythology deals with universal, deep human concerns like death.

BTW, the bizarre, counterproductive ways that so-called "humanity" deals with these concerns made me despair to the point of walking off my nuc engineering job and living naked in a cave. Yes really. tiny url dot com slash kanecave

DAMMIT! I accidentally hit "Enter" before I finished writing about this song, and it was the reason why this song is so fucking cool. I WAS going to add:

As he comforts her, he also realizes that he's not frightened to tell her how he feels any more. Why? Because he now realizes that people die, that *everyone* does including him and her, and when they do, it's FINAL. He sees that he had been waiting for something to happen, and he wasn't evens sure what it was. But now he knows that if he doesn't reveal his secret and tell her he loves her, that they will both die and she never will have known.

That makes him not scared anymore. No WAY will he be--not now. He kind of grew up. And while that is ALWAYS a sad thing, he sees that, while he has to die, he is also free to be happy

...with her.

Man, that song RULEZ! I've listened it to it about 30 times on the headphones while I wrote this:

This geeky guy knows a girl who was in love with a Russian who is somewhat important. The nerd is jealous, and hides it, but his anxiety about revealing his feelings for her makes him too nervous to talk about what he feels, so he continues acting like a "pal" to her.

You geeks DO that.

Then the Russian was flying his private plane to Seattle or somehwere up northwest, and someone blew it up in a political assassination. The papers mentioned it, which is how he found out.

The girl is devastated; her love died in the northern skies, and as it sinks in that he's really, really gone--FOREVER, the happiness she felt turns into a cold, dark horrible feeling.

He's been talking about it with her and expressing sympathy and understanding.

But he has a really strange feeling: he's because now, maybe she'll lovbe him instead.

I hope she does, too. ☺
