Five Iron Frenzy – On Distant Shores Lyrics 1 year ago
What does the song mean?

Reading the lyrics and knowing the story of the band, this song seems to be about the exhaustive behavior of trying to meet performance expectations of Christianity rather than engaging the Christian faith as a process. The performance will only last so long and self-righteousness will only carry one so far, but mindfulness of the process of faith is what results in meeting God on the distant shore.

It's only when we surrender the performance and stop trying to be a Christian and allow Christ to transform our lives that true freedom is found.

An incredibly insightful song which demonstrates that it is not who we are, but what we are and the source of meaning in our lives.

Brand New – Jesus Christ Lyrics 12 years ago
I think its easy to translate song to fit whatever gripes or hangups you have about religion, Jesus, God or whatever and whomever you're railing against.

I don't think the song is critical of Jesus or critical of faith, rather, it's a musing on certainty, how do we really know anything and what promises do we have that life will get better with Jesus?

I think the song argues the opposite, that faith can be lonely, that doubt can persist and at what point does faith intersect with idealism?

Underneath it all the song almost asks, despairingly, that if Jesus came back would people treat him differently than before? The answer being no, people rarely change even though they become proficient at lying.

And in the end all we can be certain of is that we have wood and nails and our own hate and we'd to do Jesus just what happened before and people really don't change, they just pretend to.

Nick Drake – Black Eyed Dog Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the viewpoints that the black eyed dog could be death or depression are accurate and I don't mean to dispute that, but I do think that the song is a song of struggle, perhaps against an inner darkness or unresolved conflict that Drake felt was best expressed as a "black eyed dog."

The verses about the dog wanting more seem to indicate that something is being asked of the singer that he doesn't want to give or feel that he can no longer give, perhaps the black eyed dog is representative of the battle against depression and Drake is giving up as he can no longer feed the animal that has fed off of him for so long.

I almost want to take the song further and imagine that the black eyed dog seemed menacing or threatening to Drake but, in fact, was offering him peace in death, taking him home as a dog that was a friend would do. In some ways Drake and the black eyed dog are friends as they seem to know one another, the dog wanting more and Drake simply not having anything left to give. Perhaps their is a bizarre sort of friendship there in that they know each other so well.

Such a dark, beautiful song.
