My Brightest Diamond – Something of an End Lyrics 13 years ago
Tragedy and disaster have a beauty all their own, to some.

Primitive Radio Gods – Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand Lyrics 13 years ago
It seems unlikely that every songwriter has the same working methodology that you do. People do look too hard for meaning in songs and the like, but it seems even less likely that the meaning of a work ends with its author's ambitions.

It's about the way things dissipate: the insoluble questions remain unanswered, and slowly we learn how to distract ourselves while waiting for life to reach its conclusion.

Toadies – Possum Kingdom Lyrics 13 years ago
Pretty much agree with this. Although "dark secret" is vague enough that I simply assumed that it referred to the fact that the speaker is/plans to be a killer. I also didn't assume he'd keep the body literally, but that she'll always be his in his heart, after he possesses her in this most final of ways.

The vampire theory fits, I guess, but it's just one extra thing. Occam's Razor, bitches.

Poe – Hello Lyrics 13 years ago
All these other discussions have merit, but in a more general and (imo) important sense, the song is about feeling lost in life, and missing somebody important.

Interpol – Untitled Lyrics 13 years ago
If God can be said to exist, they can also said to be deadbeat and selfish, if not necessarily a person. Or at least it would take a very complex argument to say that they are definitively not such a thing, and I'm doubtful that that could even be resolved.

But yeah, I realize you're just taking the piss.

Death from Above 1979 – Turn It Out Lyrics 13 years ago
It really wouldn't even matter if the band themselves said the album was literally all about sex, the fact that the songs can just as easily fit some other interpretation invalidates the idea that that's the sum total of all meaning.

Death from Above 1979 – You're a Woman, I'm a Machine Lyrics 13 years ago
Fuck you break-up song, but the "you" in this case isn't his ex-partner, but rather life itself. The song recognizes how fundamentally broken it is to attempt to live a life as a figurative machine, but holds no hope that the narrator can do any differently (hence the push-pull between the addresser and the addressee).
