A little tidbit to the insensitive people who seem to think cutting is a middle school fad that exists for them to laugh and point at: I am 30 years old and I've been a cutter since I was 18. I am abstaining solely because my family members are judgemental assholes and not because I wanted to quit, because TRUST ME I NEVER WANTED TO QUIT. Cutting gave me the best feeling ever! So it's a choice between being judged and gossiped about and humiliated in public on a regular basis, or living with constant hunger pangs, because that's what it feels like to a cutter who can't get their fix; it feels like violent hunger pangs. Both sides are right. The first several lines suggest the guy is totally whipped over her. This song encompasses two different extremes that women can feel when considering banging someone for the first time. This song kicked off a huge turning point for me while in high school. After discovering Garbage, they quickly became my favorite band solely based on the music. Then I looked at Shirley Manson a little more closely and felt I had finally found someone who could understand me (not ME personally as I've never met her but you get the drift). This song was one of my favorites and one day during history class, everyone was chit-chatting; I think the teacher had left the room, or something, I don't know. Anyway everyone was just socializing with each other. Me having no friends, I had my trusty notebook out and I decided to write down the lyrics of this song. When I was about halfway finished, this hip-hoppy-type girl snatched up the notebook and started reading it out loud. She didn't know who Garbage was, and she thought this was MY poetry that I had written. When she finished reading everyone looked at me as if I was about to pull a knife out and cut my wrists or something. They all told me I was messed up in the head and had issues. I opened my mouth to say "That's not even mine, that's just a song I like" but decided to say "now that you know how messed up I am, what do you think I do to people who take my stuff without permission?" In other words, I was flattered to be ridiculed by such shallow people for enjoying something so deep and beautiful. This incident circulated the school in the form of gossip and of course it got stretched into something bigger. But I didn't care. From then on people treated me differently. This song still brings back that proud memory. |

I think in the song Mr. Bowie is expressing his fear of the Americanisation of the world: "I'm afraid of Americans I'm afraid of the world" He's afraid he is also being absorbed into the American culture against his will: "I'm afraid I can't help it I'm afraid I can't." And yes, he goes on to describe the things Americans seem to be obsessed with nowadays. Thinks like getting high, getting laid, and getting material posessions. "God is an American" has a double meaning. One, most Americans view god as a version of themselves. The biggest bible-thumpers in America are also the biggest patriots (generally speaking), be they military people or just people who like to scream "USA! USA!" at the top of their lungs. And two, God is the controller of the universe according to christian mythology, and in reality, Mr. Bowie feels that America is gaining control of the universe, hence god and America are the same thing.
