I feel that this song is about finally giving up your hope in the world after trying again and again. The "bitter man" would just refer to God. But more specifically, I think this song is about giving up on finding love. The narrator has tried to keep a positive outlook on life, smiling when he was really down, but he now sees the world as a lonely, depressing place where he will never find love. I think in the part "I tried to live alone But lonely is so lonely you know So human as I am, I had to give up my defences So I smiled and tried to mean it To let myself let go" suggests that he had tried before to avoid falling in love, but by giving up his defences, he let someone in and tried to be happy again, but was still hurting. |

| This song always reminds me of one of my exes. He was always a very scientific person--he believed everything could be explained or improved by logic. He tended to over-analyze everything and acted purely on reason and thought--something that I never did. However, when he broke up with me, he had no explanations. Even when he discussed later that he was sorry for breaking up with me, he couldn't explain why he did it. The song tells the story of a guy who believes that he can solve everything with enough thought, only to find out that love doesn't work that way. | |

| I believe John wrote this song after he met Yoko Ono while he was still married to Cynthia. The lyrics "words are pouring out like endless rain into a paper cup..." could have referred to he and Cynthia, and how their love no longer had effect on him after meeting Yoko. "Limitless undying love...calls me on and on" would refer to the love that John felt he could have if he left Cynthia for Yoko. "Jai Guru Deva Om" is a mantra, which John would have chanted while meditating. This lyric is followed by "nothing's gonna change my world." Perhaps John used meditation in an attempt to clear his mind of the confusion of his love for Yoko and for Cynthia. However, he is always reminded that no matter how much he meditates, it won't change the fact that he is still stuck. The song tells the story of John's inner conflict about his dying love for Cynthia and his new found love for Yoko Ono, and his feelings of being stuck in his life and relationship. Or so I think :) | |
