Hey man i appreciate the feedback, and even the criticism and the fact that you dont agree, as it is CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, and i get the feeling that you, as a fan, can appreciate how deep into the lyrics i took it, and the time and effort spent. As well as the fact that you take the time to back up your claims with the quote from jack, and intelligent thoughts on the matter, rather than "no way it's not about vampires you idiot" or "you're gay".

Also i'd like to know what you think about my heroin explaination, in the 3rd comment i left if you have time to sit down and look through it, as i liked the way you commented no the vampire one. So if you get the chance i'd like to see what you have to say.

Although you make very valid points, i had read once in an interview jack talking about vampires, which is what inspired my vision on the lyrics of the song... You make a good point on the rest of the album having nothing to do with the album, so it is possible, though i believed this to be jacks reference, that it was something completely irrelevant. I did kind of feel like the title could still be a referance to jack as a vampire being the consoler of the lonely, but that is purely my opinion.

I was in no way trying to suggest that their image, or anything else about them portrays iike you said about my chemical romance... i was simply suggesting that this one song in particular had a bright eyed childish theme, which though completely off point with their typical influence, snuck it's way into a song as more of a nostalgic/memory type thing.

Rock on brother

I look forward to your response

WOW! i'm really impressed that you figured this out! it was supposed to be a secret meaning to the song, as they chose not to reveal it when the album first dropped, and let fans come to their own conclusions. In fact when asked they even refused to explain the meaning, and stated that it would be revealed through subtle hints over time.

I have a full explanation which picks apart the song line by line explaining in detail the true meaning of the song... if you're interested it's in two comments, one at the bottom of this page, and a 2nd one with more detail on the top of page 2.

P.S. I'd appreciate some feedback if you get a chance.

i love your theory! Although incorrect ( i provide the official meaning in a comment at the bottom of this page, continued in a 2nd comment on the top of page 2) I totally see your logic... I even took it a bit further, and went line by line for every single line and explained how it COULD, very accurately describe heroin addiction. and how EVERY SINGLE LINE can be applied to this theory.

Please, i'd really appreciate feedback on both of my theories if you have the chance.

Also and these are just my personal interpretatons, and thoughts.... which unlike my previous posts which are based on fact, may or may not have any real merit...

I think that how jack and brendan take turns singing, could kind of represent and internal conversation he has when he offers the "something good to eat" then inside he's thinking "havent had a decent meal" because he misses food...

also the lines:
If you're looking for an accomplice
A confederate, somebody's who's helpless
You're gonna find, you'll find yourself alone

If you're looking for cut-throat
Singing above note, looking for a scapegoat
You're gonna find, you'll find yourself alone"

could actually be the vampire talking, isntead of sometone talking to him... The vampire is complaining again and explains how he has been searching for something to give his life meaning, yet he's left lonely and disappointed. to which the person replies:

"Looking for sympathy?
I can get you something
Something good, something good to eat"

, the human could be offering him or herself to the vampire, either in part of the transformation, or to feed on them without killing them, or even to feed on them killing them, or even to get someone else for the vampire to feed on..

I also think that the line about how his tongue is tied, could mean that he is done complaining.

Also if i was unaware of the meaning of the song.. i might take it to be about their struggle with rock stardom in their own lives, in ways very similar to the vampires struggle with his life.

OR

that its about HEROIN ADDICTION. either are plausible in my opinion, capitalism did a pretty good one on the struggle with rock stardom, so i will just do the heroin one.

"Haven't seen the sun in weeks
My skin is getting pale
Haven't got a mind left to speak
And I'm skinny as a rail"

Very heroin-esque. Imagine them in a hotel room with a big stash of dope for like a month, ordering room service for the occasional meal, and just getting high and watching movies on the pay-per-view, nodding off, playing music, etc... no need to leave the hotel room, they have all the dope they need, they dont go on tour till summer, pale skin is a side effect of heroin use, as well as lack of sunshine from not leaving the room... skinny as a rail because they barely eat due to being strung out all the time.

"
Lightbulbs are getting dim
My interests are starting to wane
I'm told it's everything a man could want
And I shouldn't complain"

Light bulbs are getting dim - When on high amounts of heroin, your pupils will become like pin points very tiny, therefor taking in less light than normal because your pupils don't dilate properly to take in enough light... so the lights literally become dim in your perception of them...

Interests are starting to wane. because they're really high and they dont want to do anything. They just want to sit on the hotel bed on the nod watching a movie or something. They just want to sit still and enjoy the high and dont really want to do much else.

I'm told it's everything a man should want - Addicts think so highly of the euphoria. They want to live their whole life feeling that way. Plus the lifestyle of being rockstars, they have the best job in the world to many. and as an addict they're rich enough to keep up their habbit at whatever level they want. So basically everyone who is a junkie and a fan of music envies them.

I shouldnt complain - I think they get down on themselves for using, or it could just simply be in reference to my previously stated struggle with rockstardom, and this particular line is not specificalyl directly related to heroin. which is not enough to disprove my theory..

"Conversations getting dull
There's a constant buzzing in my ears"

When you're high enough on heroin your head starts to go numb and your hearing becomes less and there is literally a buzzing in your ears which makes yuor ears fuzzy and affects your hearing. So this line is to be taken very literally exactly what it says. They're talking to eachother, and shoot up, and they get high enough that these effects start happening.

"Sense of humor's void and numb
And I'm bored to tears"

They're too high to think straight and their heads are fuzzy and start to lose their sense of humor.. Bored to tears because they've probably been sitting in the hotel for like a week just getting high and haven't done anything..

"If you're looking for an accomplice
A confederate, somebody's who's helpless
You're gonna find, you'll find yourself alone

If you're looking for cut-throat
Singing above note, looking for a scapegoat
You're gonna find, you'll find yourself alone"

This is either someone telling them, or them telling someone. If you're looking for htose things they are not going to fill the position because they're just gonna get high and sit in the hotel room and that is it, so you're doing it alone... Or they're trying to get someone to fill the position and they refuse.. or they're saying it to each other in the same meaning.

"Looking for sympathy
I can get you something
Something good, something good to eat"

again this could be, telling someone, someone else telling them, or them telling eachother...

Looking for sympathy? i'll get you something good to eat.. so i guess they're complaining that they havent eaten a decent meal in ilke a week because they've been too high to eat so one of them or someone else offers the other to get them something good to eat.

"Haven't had a decent meal
My brain is fried
Haven't slept a week for real
My tongue is tied"

again, not eating due to heroin... brain is fried cuz they're strung out... Tongue is tied, because when you get too high, or go a week without sleeping, it's hard to talk, LITERALLY.

Then it just repeats the stuff i already explained... so i see this as a very possible additional meaning that can fit the lyrics...

feedback on this meaning would also be appreciated, i already know it's not the TRUE meaning, as the vampire one is... but i'd like to knwo what you think about my interpretation of the lyrics and how i came up with this meaning for them.

I ACCIDENTALLY hit the COMMENT BUTTON, BEFORE I was finished, so my comment goes TO THE SECOND PAGE IN A SECOND COMMENT to complete the comment started on THIS PAGE.

The comment on the SECOND PAGE has MORE information, and explains in MORE DETAIL and depth and I pick apart each line from the song ONE BY ONE and explain what it means to paint a VERY CLEAR picture to all of the songmeanings.net readers out there.

P.S. i'd love some feedback on my interpretation if you get a chance.

I also enjoyed capitalisms theory, and i believe out of all of the ones i've read, it is certainly the most plausible. I also believe that the 2nd meaning of the song, which was the meaning intended to be perceived by the audience (as the real meaning was kept secret from the fans when the album was dropped), is supposed to be about them, and their struggle with rockstardom.

HOWEVER...

it was actually written about a vampire and his internal struggle with life as a vampire.

jack wanted to be a vampire as a child, and changed his mind when he got older... if you'd like to know the details, i have added them in a comment on the bottom of this page, HOWEVER,

This article is great in reference to the title of the album and the title of the track, HOWEVER... it has nothing to do with the actual MEANING of the song...

sorry i accidentally hit something on the keyboard that made me add the comemnt before i was finished...

he's bored and lonely. light bulbs getting dim references how he's phased by nothing, and his feelings towards the world and his psychiatric state has made him numb and looking at the world through his eyes makes the world seem dim. he was skinny as a teen when he was turned so he is eternally skinny..in addition he's starting to feel like he doesnt want to live anymore and starts feeding less and less... so he has the psychological feeling of "skinny/starving" much like how anorexics feel when they havent eaten for an entire day or so...

He is frustrated, disgusted, and tired of his life...and he complains about it to people who are human. The humans are naive because they lack his experience. They look at him with twinkling eyes wishing they could have what he has. Possibly BEGGING for him to bite them. DREAMING of what it would be like to be a vampire, and pondering all the things they would do if he would turn them. They tell him how great it is, and how nearly everyone in the world wishes for eternal youth. They are jealous of him. and he is told that he shouldn't complain, that it is a gift... But he sees it as a curse, refuses to turn them... Tells them of his misery, how he would never wish this on anyone, not even his worst enemy. He is torn between fear of dying and the addiction to blood (which to him is like the strongest heroin in the world), and the guilt and disgust for his lifestyle, and how miserable he has become.

The line
I'm bored to tears

is pretty obvious... he's been a vampire for so long and done everything he wanted to do. Jack had a whole list of things that he fantasized about that he would do if he was a vampire and had eternity and invincibility to do everything he possibly wanted. Including mastering music with infinite time, and doing dangerous adrenaline rush activities, because he would no longer have to risk pain, injury or death....among other things which normal people have restraints, due to time, fear, injury, death etc... anything that a vampire can do much easily than a human that he expressed and interest towards the vampire in the story (which may or not be jack imagining himself as a vampire, or just a fictional vampire for the purpose of the song, he has not revealed this information to the public, i choose to believe that it is jack as a vampire) Anyway...

He has literally done it all, and is bored out of his gord (rhyme unintentional)

the lines

"If you're looking for an accomplice
A confederate, somebody's who's helpless
You're gonna find, you'll find yourself alone

If you're looking for cut-throat
Singing above note, looking for a scapegoat
You're gonna find, you'll find yourself alone"

are what he feels like telling the people at the party, or perhaps actually does. He's basically just saying he's not the person they are looking for when they ask him favors, or beg him to turn them. He wants no part in any of these things. He just goes about his own business, he's tired of life and tired of looking for anything outside the ordinary.

The lines:
"Looking for sympathy
I can get you something
Something good, something good to eat"

again are referencing people begging to be turned... He is telling them basically that playing the sympathy card is useless, he's not falling for it... He will not sympathize with how miserable your life is and how much better it would be if he turned you, because of how miserable his life is, nothing could possibly be worse. He believes he is cursed, and that it is not a gift therefor refuses to turn others. (i explained a little more in my earlier post.) Those who try to get his sympathy in an effort to turn them he replies that he will get them something good to eat to make them feel better...

The reference to something good to eat plays on two different levels... You see the first is simple. I will get you something good to eat to drown your sorrows. He will sympathize with them up to a certain point and because he is their friend or simply because he is a good person/nice guy he will get them something to eat to drown their sorrows (as many people do, they're depressed and go eat a bunch of ice cream to feel better) he will buy you the icecream sundae to indulge yourself..

On a deeper lever... he remembers what it was like to eat real food, how much he enjoyed it. He has been on blood and off real food for so long, he misses it with a passion. It is one of the things he misses MOST about being human. All the supposed "gifts" that he took advantage of after he was turned...it's been over a hundred years and he's done everything he wanted to with that time..but one of the things he wishes he could do most and he CAN'T is eat a delicious meal.

I mean the guys' been living on blood for over a hundred years, imagine living on slimfast for the rest of your life. It'd probably keep you alive... but you're never going to feel completely full or satisfied...

So in a sense, him offering yuo "something good to eat" is probably actually a really deep sense of sympathy, and a very generous offer. Because of how he feels about food , being WAY different and certainly of much more value, than the person he is offering it to feels about it. He values food very highly because he hasnt had any in over a hundred years and misses it like crazy desperately wishes to taste some delicious food.

Again, the lines:
"
Haven't had a decent meal
My brain is fried
Haven't slept a week for real
My tongue is tied"

are in reference to how much he misses food. ":haven't had a decent meal" in over a hundred years and he misses food with a passion.

my brain is fried, is because his subconscious mind is always running with his internal struggles, and his emotions or lack there of etc...

"havent slept a week for real" is because vampires dont sleep, and though they dont need to, i believe that the feeling humans get after sleeping for liek 12 to 16 hours and wake up feeling REALLY refreshed and good, they never experience that feeling again, because without sleep, there is never any 'refreshment" and even if they dont get "tired" per say, the duration of being awake all day, the mind never gets a break from thought which i dont imagine feeling "good"

"my tongue is tied" is kinda like he's at this "party" we all seem to imagine the song referencing to somehow, or the people who always bother him to turn them are talking his ear off and then ask him a question, I imagine him like too involved with his innerconflict and inner thoughts at the time of hte conversation, and instaed of taking the "tongue tied" meaning that he cant tell them...but that he actually isnt processing hte conversation well enough due to his internal thoughts about something else, that he just cant respond correctly because he's not listening and interperating and thinking well enough about the words the other person is saying to him..

"light bulbs are getting dim" again putting emphasis on that point, to finish the whoel message of the song, and leave the sense and impression of that part being really important.

The negativity that jack found out about his childhood fantasy is based on the thoughts this line is a reference to (if you are unsure what i'm talking about i exlpained it in my first post)

therefore it is basically the whole message of the song and he just ended it there for dramatic effect and poetic expression.

Sincerely,
Jamaul Wallace

P.S. I'd really appreciate your feedback, and i'd love to hear your thoughts on my interpretation even if they're negative, and especially if you're a true fan.

This song is actually secretly written about vampires, with the intention of having a second obvious meaning regarding partying, and how all his friends think he enjoys life and has a good time but inside he's secretly miserable...though all his friends tell him how good he has it and he shouldn't complain only they don't understand either because they disagree with his thoughts towards his own life, or simply because they are not living it to actually think deep enough into his life to understand how he feels...

However, the secret (and ORIGINAL) message of the song, regards jacks childhood fantasy about becoming a vampire, and that when he became older his life experiences changed his mind...

The lines:
Haven't seen the sun in weeks
My skin is getting pale

are blatantly obvious..,

The lines:

Haven't got a mind left to speak
And I'm skinny as a rail

Light bulbs are getting dim
My interests are starting to wane
I'm told it's everything a man could want
And I shouldn't complain

are referring to how he's been a vampire for so long that everyone he was close to has died, and the things he used to be interested in he's losing interest in... I imagine that he wanted to be a vampire because the eternal youth and invincibility would provide plenty of time for him to practice things he wanted to do without any restraints, in example music... although after lets say 100 years he's bored of music even though in his youth it was his passion... he has now had enough time and practice to master everything and is so talented that even playing the most complex pieces of music come without the slightest thought and he is bored out of his mind. all the things that used to excite him he's already experienced so many times for so long that he barely gets any emotion at all.

everything is just so dull and he lacks feeling... he is so tired of life, and he realizes the longer life goes on the more depressed and lacking he will become...
