@[heatherfer:30893] I don't think "it's my life" has to be entirely irrelevant, especially if the other person is also doubting whether it's right for the narrator to jump off their previous life. But I really appreciate your interpretation of the verses, which I agree is the main point here.

It makes sense if the shock is finding out about a lover, particularly given the expression "spank the monkey", so this time it's not about masturbation, the monkey's been shocked by something a partner has done. "Don't like it but I guess I'm learning" is nice because it relates both to animal experimentation & discoveries about a relationship.

This is the most useful comment here, but you all seem a bit naive if you think this song is about leaving drugs behind, it's about TRYING to leave heroin behind "time after time...I'm stuck with a valuable friend" (heroin is expensive & is injected.) See further "prisoner of love" a decade later.

I'm afraid I seem to vaguely remember an interview from the time where she said it was about an abusive relationship (maybe with someone older?) thus the shame the victim feels and the surprise in the shed. Now it reminds me of The Reader (Der Vorleser).

I think Helj mostly has it right. The one thing I disagree about though is that this whole song is about someone who grew up knowing his parents had been around the block and totally levelled with him about that. His mother warns him about the type of girls who can give him STD, his father tells him she would know since she was a WAC. What the father (or possibly kid, unclear) doesn't believe in the second verse though is that the WACs were all virgins ("old maids" -- women who won't get married). This is all pretty shocking for a lot of 1970s midwestern kids: mom had a life before marriage, dad knows all about it (she didn't lie or trick him), they still like each other & their kid & get it on & have fun. I'm sure there are still parents in the midwest not this honest. I think you are surrendering to the truth that we are all going to be like our parents (and theirs), but don't give up on the idea that you are still yourself, special, something to value (and be careful of STD).

Wow, you make it so melodramatic. Maybe "she" (He, if we mean Talk Talk) is saying that the object of her love should stop worrying about how much it would mess up her life if he started seriously going out with her (half way won't do). Maybe he's avoiding her because she already has a family or something.

I think this is talking about a series of relationships "of every soldier passing" refers to the various people she has had relationships with. I think the current one from the first verse they have not formed a relationship yet, and he does not know why she is nervous. The third verse she is talking to the person who made her afraid. I think Marlene Dietrich is giving her strength, the wise older woman, the one who tells her to stand up for herself and not be afraid to be alone sometimes. I heard her talk about that poster in an interview once. I think she is changing her destiny from being a victim to being self confident.
