The song is truly creepy -- meaning well-conceived and well-recorded -- but crassly exploitative of the teens, tweens and grade-schoolers whose imaginations were all wrapped up in their AM radios (and really, what else was there besides the Bradys and the Partridges on TV?) It's the same sort of hucksterism that gave us "Timothy" (which I also think is a great recording). Both songs haunted my sleep when I was little. I've read that the song was "inspired" by a college football team's plane crash -- I think the one from the "We Are Marshall" movie. |

Could be someone who's strung out on his or her (probably her) own drug habit, impudence, narcisissm, fear, social retardation, laziness, or even corrosive influence of a crazy stuck-up mom who isn't around anymore. Then she looks in the mirror and sees it's too late, while everybody else is going as far as they can, as people instinctively do. Damn right it's disturbing, even cruel .... unless maybe Alex was describing himself? |
