David Bowie – Suffragette City Lyrics 9 years ago
lest any Rush Limbaugh devotee thinks otherwise, Bowie is clearly making fun of the ball-bustee, w/the 'Henry' reference. showing the weakness of men not wanting to give up power as being a hindrance to the progress of women.

Lou Reed – Perfect Day Lyrics 14 years ago
This song, to me, is just the 'first act', if you will, of the song 'satallite of love', off the same album; which is about a jealous stalker. the speaker is an alienated, lonely guy, ...much like a guy like travis bickle in 'taxi driver', who overstates and romantacizes a date. 'you're gonna reap, just what you soe', just foreshadows this desparate, unrequited love in the making. i understand why ppl think its about herion..because its was in the movie 'transpotting' and lou reed wrote famous songs about it, but this is a song about 'human bondage'..reed writes a lot of song about that too, folks..

Cream – Blue Condition Lyrics 14 years ago
i love this bleedin' song. sounds like a tired, long-suffering bloke depressed his girlfriend, or unrequited love interest, is a presumptuous, facile, b-word, daft minger, who has the wrong idea of him, and won't let him explain himself, causing deep dejection 'all daway frew'. well..okay, you can tell i've been there. i want it to mean that.

Steely Dan – Two Against Nature Lyrics 14 years ago
LISTEN PPL: this is the plot of 'LAST TANGO IN PARIS'. i'll bet my last dollar that mr becker was inspired by this movie. the just previous post is long and thorough, but i'm right, and complete.

Steely Dan – Gaslighting Abbie Lyrics 14 years ago
i'm sure this song does reference the movie 'gaslight', but i think its just an inside joke between fagan and becker; something to do with their return to the music biz, which is what this album represents. it's not a homage to that film..just two aging guys, 'with all that beautiful work they've done' slaying the music business again...

Steely Dan – Almost Gothic Lyrics 14 years ago
'pure science with a splash of black cat'..'she's all buzz then she's noise free'..'if i'm not already blazed enough, she hits me with that cryptic stuff', 'i'm sure what she's telling me is mostly lies' these are all drug-high metaphors. 'almost gothic' means its not a natural high, its almost like i have a real relationship w/this chick who's 'almost gothic in a natural way'..who gives me a natural high..

the person who said the theme of the album is middle-age desparation is right, but this loser is a pathetic drug addict playing with a metaphorical blow-up doll. i could be wrong, but..i'm not.

correction: 'throw out your GOLD teeth' means gamble with your life.

Steely Dan – Your Gold Teeth II Lyrics 14 years ago
'throw out your teeth' means go ahead and gamble w/your life, and see what happens. i think about that 'dumb cowboy' joe buck in the movie 'midnight cowboy' everytime i hear this song.

R.E.M. – Harborcoat Lyrics 14 years ago
i think in the early years (frankly, i only own the first three rem albums) stipe and the group were just giving the listener a ball of clay, allowing his or her imagination to shape it into something.

R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics 14 years ago
denmark street is right. its about, confused, obsessive, unrequited love. 'losing my religion' is akin to 'giving up the ghost'.

Steely Dan – Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me) Lyrics 14 years ago
The meaning? I'll tell ya the meaning: Rent the film 'MIDNIGHT COWBOY', Dustin Hoffmans' character Enrique "Ratso" Rizzo will give you the meaning. If I'm wrong (I'm not), you should rent it anyway, it's a gr8 film!

Steely Dan – Rikki Don't Lose That Number Lyrics 14 years ago
This is a gr8 SD song and I absolutely LOVE the guitar solo. When I heard it on the radio in the 70s, I thought was about unrequited love; the kind I was going through at that time, so I felt the song was 'mine'. I've since read some music critics comment about the 'homosexual allusions' in it; still loved the song, but it bummed me out a little just because I thought it wasn't mine anymore. Glad to read Fagans' response on the meaning.

Steely Dan – Janie Runaway Lyrics 14 years ago
Well,...I think it's about a drug score wrapped up in a runaway/sex case. In other words, it has double meaning. 'Janie', the pot, survived the 'fires' of the tampa DEA crew, and became the 'wonderwaif' of 'Gram'mercy' Park? Why not Central Park? "Grab some take-out"? Who refers to buying clothes like that? The "sugar shack" in PA? Some Hersheys chocolate cravings? Why not take her to Mass? "..try new things"? 'Melanie' is a new stronger drug.."along for the ride". Everybody knows 'dreary sundays' are 'rescued' by getting high, and being high makes traffic 'interesting'. I love women, but they don't make me feel like 'sailing' and 'painting' again. Drugs are a 'federal case'. SD songs just aren't that str8-forward simple and sleazy. Fagan and Becker are smarter and deeper than that.
