Frank Zappa – I'm the Slime Lyrics 14 years ago
I think what you said was good reddorothy. I think the principle of the song can also be applied to the rest of the media. You really have to take the things you watch and read with a pinch of salt. It is so easy for us to take the word of the media without stopping to think, wait a minute, it may not be completely true.

The other element to this song is that people end up giving their lives to the television, which is a very sad thing indeed. It reminds me of a verse from Jeff Buckley's 'The Sky is a Landfill' song that goes "turn away from the screen, it will tell you nothing more". There isn't much spiritual growth that comes from spacing out in front of the tv.

I'm not sure if it's television that is evil. Some programs/films can be eye opening and edifying, but they are pretty rare.

Well, I have out-rambled reddorothy.

Frank Zappa – Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk Lyrics 14 years ago
Who are Pat and Jimbo? I'm guessing they were American politicians, does anyone know?

This song is good in that it highlights the fact that just because someone says they are a Christian, doesn't necessarily mean that they are one. Jesus may 'think your are a jerk' when you profess to be following him but in actual fact you are not. It's like Jesus even said himself "people will call me 'Lord', but not do the things I say" (paraphrased).

So although there are many who are Christian by name only, and do some terrible things, I don't think that should be a cause for us to be unfair to the real followers of Jesus that are trying to do good.

I Am Kloot – AVENUE OF HOPE Lyrics 14 years ago
I tend to disagree with rqallison when he/she says "Living in hope leads to apathy and inaction. "

It depends on what you do with your life, and maybe what you hope for.

You can live in hope for a healthier humanity, for a day where love is considered more important than money and material gain. And you can also do something about it by choosing personally to not put those things before love, and to act in service to others in need. I think it is good to hope, and a lack of hope is a lot more likely to lean to apathy and inaction.

But... it may be that rqallison meant something slightly different to what he actually said. You could live in hope for someone else (like maybe the government) to make the changes we need to see, which could lead you to do nothing about it on a personal level.

Anyway I haven't actually heard the song, but I like the I Am Kloot songs that I have heard. The only downside is I wish they would say something more meaningful (which is why this song's potentially meaningful song title attracted me to read the lyrics).

Does anyone know of an I Am Kloot song that has a message of some sort? or of another good band with a message? Thanks

Leonard Cohen – Anthem Lyrics 14 years ago
While some of Leonard Cohen's songs may be a little pessimistic and concerned with the trivial pursuits of the flesh, this one is lyrically optimistic and I like that. I think Cohen has some insight into spiritual things but struggles with hope. So this song it quite refreshing in it's hopefulness.

There are some really good lines, aside from the crack in everything, which is a great line I like;

"while the killers in high places
say their prayers out loud. "

It is Christian to say your prayers in private(Matthew6:5-6), so this line highlights the fact that those in 'high places' or positions of power in the world are acting in a hypercritical way when they pray out loud to be seen as righteous people.

"Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering "

We need to get active spreading the truth now, and not to worry that we have to first become perfect to do so. If we wait for perfection we will never get round to it.

"every heart
to love will come
but like a refugee. "

Everyone that desires love (the divine type, not romantic) will come together to the truth, but they will be like refugee's in a foreign land. As the place of Truth (with a capital T) is very foreign to the way the world is.

That is just the way I take the song anyway.

Ian Brown – Keep What Ya Got Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't know if it was intended this way, but I take the chorus to mean that you have to give everything away, in a material sense, so that you can hold onto what is really important, i.e your soul.

I liked what bison libertine said. And what is interesting is that Jesus didn't just tell the rich young ruler to give up all his wealth, he said that anyone who wishes to be his disciple must do that as well. Pretty challenging words for anyone calling themselves a Christian!

Ian Brown – The World Is Yours Lyrics 14 years ago
There are some good lines in this song;

"You can never reach the heights and avoid the hurt" No pain no gain!

"Yeah you might have it all but you'll still want more
There's a law for the rich and another for the poor" Greed kills and inequality is very much alive.

It seems what he means by the world is yours, is like an encouragement to grab the bull by the horns and make something of your life. But it could be interpreted to mean something about gaining worldly power. Like, if I say "the world is mine" it sounds like you want to rule the world or something, but I don't think it is meant to be a promotion of selfishness.

The Faint – A Battle Hymn for Children Lyrics 14 years ago
It's a good anti-war song.

"Show us a laser, take us to space, or let us go. We've got violent games of ours at home." I like the way the lyrics show that young people have become impatient with learning because they have so many other meaningless distractions around them.

"You gave us guns for toys". Unfortunately those distractions are often ones that encourage violence and hatred (and lust, greed etc).

Pink Floyd – Welcome to the Machine Lyrics 14 years ago
I think Syd Barrett was so creative and had a youthful spirit, and would have flourished in a 'perfect' world. But because this world is far from perfect, he went insane. So maybe this influenced Roger Waters when he wrote this song about the music industry being like a machine. As in he could see that the music industry was a corrupting influence on the artists pure creativity. But, like others have said, although this song is about the music industry, the 'machine' concept is far bigger than just that. It applies to any situation where money is desired more than anything else. Which is what the system is about. Most people do work for the money and it is slowly killing our spirits.

It's a little depressing, until you start to find solutions. Then you can focus on positive changes, which are spiritual, and must always begin with yourself and not other people (like political change). If we keep focusing on making ourselves into better individuals then it can inspire others to do the same and bring about true lasting change.

Pink Floyd – Money Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is bang on. "money, so they say
is the root of all evil today" Paul would be proud of this line!

I think Pink Floyd have got a bit of the vision of Christ. At least they are disillusioned with the 'system', or should I say the 'machine'?

They are just a little too pessimistic at times. I guess too much focus on the darkness instead of the light can do that to you. Still, I think they have done a good job of making people aware of certain spiritual issues.

Pulp – Mile End Lyrics 14 years ago
manic ash wrote; "there are probably better ways of trying to rebel against the system"

I know there is a chance you will just write me off as 'religious' and not want to hear what I'm saying, but then again you may not do that. So I will add that following Jesus is the ultimate rebellion against the system. Jesus taught that we should work for love and not for money. Imagine if people started doing that! The system as we know it would be gone. I mean, people would still work, but they would work with love, helping those in need, not taking more than you need if it meant someone else would go without (something we do in the west, but have become rather detached to the reality of the situation because we don't see the connection between our abundance and the stark lack that exists in other parts of the world). I don't want to put all the blame on western countries as each individual needs to make the appropriate changes, even those in poor countries. But we are the one's 'leading the way' towards destruction. I hope people aren't offended by me sharing my mind, I know it can be convicting, but conviction is sometimes what is needed.

Keith Green – Asleep In The Light Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is very good and insightful. It really captures the frustration one can feel with regard to some peoples attitudes towards what it means to follow Christ. What he is saying about the church being 'asleep in the light' is so relevant for today, even though it was written in the early 80's. God wants to see our lives transformed into vessels for his love, so we can help others and not to just lie back and keep soaking it in.

"It's time to quit playing church and start being the Church (Matt. 18:20)" – Keith Green, as quoted by Melody Green in the introduction to A Cry in the Wilderness, Sparrow Press, 1993.

Jeff Buckley – The Sky Is A Landfill Lyrics 14 years ago
Throw out the stones from all the cemetery homes
For the violence of a nation gone by

Or the politics of weakness
And the garbage dump of souls
That will now black the sky

I had a little look for an interview online that mentions this song and couldn't find one. Could you point me to one?

I can't see how this song would be just about cigarettes as there is so much more in their. And stuff that is very profound if it is indeed about rejecting the 'system' and it's ways(which I imagine it is). He says it's the garbage dump of SOULS that will black the sky. The grace that men despise and women have learned to loose sounds like a spiritual property, it doesn't make me think of cigarettes.

The bit about throwing out the stones from cemetery homes makes me think of the stone that was moved from the entrance of Christ's tomb. I find it inspiring to think of that, an image of not being defeated by death(spiritually) or being a "slave to the system", but being free.
