Joanna Newsom – Occident Lyrics 6 years ago
I don't interpret this song as being about the relationship between to people, so much as being about the narrator's relationship with life, and God. I think all of the "you" stuff is more in reference to life as a concept or something. I think she's searching for meaning. When she says stuff like "I'll wait for you.", it's like hey God/universe I'm waiting for a sign. Just my two cents, though. Hence Long-Life, and Slow-Heart being capitalized.

@[TooBusyMoping:17759] Absolutely agree with you. I have Depression too, and that was the first thing I thought of when I heard this. I think the whole Not to Disappear thing also refers to the way you cease to function when you're depressed. Your personality becomes flat, you lose your interests, basically you just feel like you're fading away.

I'm not entirely sure why but this song reminds me of Wuthering Heights, some of the imagery and the magnitude of the feelings behind it seem to match up.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Supernaturally Lyrics 12 years ago
I love this song so much, and I think there are many levels to it. In one way I think it's about trying to reach someone who seems really mysterious, or is hard to grasp an understanding of. I think of this in terms of myself all the time. I get so deep, and passionate, and abstract, that sometimes I have to remind myself not to go all "supernatural". In the case of the character in the song, it seems like he has elevated a woman to an otherworldly level. By doing this, he has put her on pedestal, and deemed himself unworthy. By doing this, she's no longer in his grasp. He can't emotionally reach/understand her, but he'll go to any length to keep this supernatural being around.

Birdeatsbaby – Gone! Lyrics 12 years ago
I have two theories. I think this song could be from the point of view of a bully. I think the victim either switched schools or killed herself. My 2nd thought is that maybe this is about a former band member.

Regina Spektor – The Flowers Lyrics 12 years ago
I love the part about the paper, because it reminds me so much of myself. I feel like I have a tendency to search for passages in books that I feel relate to me, or explain who I am. I usually just end up driving myself crazy. In addition to that, I get that the character from the song is kind of a lonely homebody.

I really thought it was "Just get us out and over a line" like a border or state line. I'm bummed cuz it was my favorite.

It's so weird that you get that. I thought Blood Bank involved being stuck in a snow storm. Maybe all of his songs involve snow storms, well probably not Beach Baby or Beaches.

Bon Iver – Wash. Lyrics 12 years ago
I think it definitely about the relationship one has with their own hometown. I can especially relate here, because I'm from a small town in Nodak. The way the town is personified rings very true. I believe that the place where you grow up, will become a very strong character in your life, for better or worse. The feelings always end up being somewhere between love and hate.

"climb
is all we know
when thaw
is not below us
no, can't grow up
in that iron ground
Claire, all too sore for sound"

I think this part of the song is about people trying to rise up out of home and never quite making it. From my experience, the people who never moved past their town, were never really able to leave their comfort zones and do anything with themselves. Sometimes I wonder what my friends would be like in a different setting. There is a certain sadness that moves in after to many winters in freezing flatlands.

Eisley – Trolley Wood Lyrics 13 years ago
To me this song is kind of about wandering around Hollywood and being disenchanted. The trolley represents the glamour that old Hollywood used to have. They're looking for that idea that inspired their dreams, but they don't know if it still exists. Maybe I just feel like this because I live in Hollywood, lol.

Eisley – Golly Sandra Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's about a family member reflecting on their relationship with a mentally ill family member (Sandra). This person has doubts over how they handled Sandra's illness in the past and now they're emotionally scarred.

I think it's a rape song. I think two girls are being raped or are at least very unthinking participants. I feel like they're stoned and our being violated.

They Might Be Giants – Till My Head Falls Off Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is about OCD. As a person with OCD and ADD, I can relate to this song a lot. People with OCD will often repeat actions, because they're not sure if the did them, or if they did do them, then maybe they didn't do them properly. They compulsively count things, and touch objects. This causes people to give them strange looks. ( I was washing my hands in a Target, and this lady says "What are you, a surgeon?". ) I think in the shower he's trying to get clean and the outside world seems dirty to him. His desperation kind of peaks. The silhouette is him, and what he'd be like without OCD.

Tegan and Sara – Superstar Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this is about hating fame and craving it at the same time. They envy the superstar, but feel like she's superficial and soulless. They want fame, but recognize all the problems that are coupled with it. I think the last lines are about how they went from seeing themselves as angels, their own role models, to some celebrity replacing that notion.

Tegan and Sara – Relief Next to Me Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree with what everyone is saying, but I'd like to add something. I always thought when she said she couldn't give relief, it meant sexually. I feel like she's expressing that she's a very private person, and feels like she can't surrender her body.

Charlotte Sometimes – How I Could Kill A Man Lyrics 13 years ago
In a lot of ways, I think she is singing about herself. However, I think she may also be singing to a gal pal. My friend was in a similar situation, probably still is. She would just blow through a string of losers who would be awful to her. Then come crying about it to me, then repeat the situation over and over. She's trying to comfort her friend, but at the same time she's sort of patronizing her. It's like, "Alright, go get your heart off the floor, and let's do this again." Her friend keeps getting burnt. Charlotte even says so! Her friends love life, I feel is getting in the way of her own life. She wants it all, but has to keep pulling her friend back. She eventually cuts her friend off to pursue her own life, because her friend refuses to get out of her own messes.

Jeff Buckley – New Year's Prayer Lyrics 13 years ago
I always thought this was about someone on death row. Of course, I thought the lyrics were different. I thought it was "fall in line", or "follow the line". I also thought the words were "stand up tall behind your electric chair, dance". Although, the real words fit this theme quite well to. I always picture someone walking the Green Mile.

Fall Out Boy – West Coast Smoker Lyrics 13 years ago
I always felt that this song was about mental illness. Which is why it's my favorite off the album.

wishes bounce me weightless (Wishing to get better, to the point of it being pure fantasy.)
the infrared scope of pointlessness (Looking for the cause under the surface and finding nothing.)
the bulls are sedated (Being medicated after flying off the handle.)
and this fight's fixed (Can't beat mental illness, it's already predetermined.)
don't feel bad for the suicidal cats
gotta kill themselves nine times before they get it right (So pathetic, you can't even kill yourself properly.)
the PA system keeps my heart, heart beating tonight (could be music keeping them going, or a voice over a hospital intercom)
yeah.

oh hell yes
i'm a nervous wreck
oh hell yes
the drugs just make me reset (The medicine doesn't help. It just prepares you to start the battle with your sickness again.)
knock once for the father
twice for the son
three times for the holy ghost. (Counting on religion to help you.)

come in the water's warm (Try to get better. Nurses and doctors pushing you forward.)
come on like a sugar cube (Recovery is sweet.)
but with a kick in the head (a major setback)
like putting wings on lead (pointless, you crash)
and your eyes are blockin my starlight (Turning away from people who are trying to help you towards fantasy.)
i'm the last of my kind (Believing you're unique or alone, because you're crazy.)
that's all that should matter to you (Your semi content, everyone should back off.)
follow the disorganized religion of my head
and we'll never get through customs (Your way isn't working, because it doesn't make sense or is dangerous.)
let's just take off again instead (Run from the problem)

got my degree in the gutter (Lost all sense of personal pride.)
my heart broken in the dorms of the ivy league (Couldn't keep up or assimilate with advanced society.)

oh hell yes
i'm a nervous wreck
oh hell yes
the drugs just make me reset
knock once for the father
twice for the son
three times for the holy ghost.

knock once for the father
twice for the son
three times for the holy ghost.

i'm a nervous wreck

i'm a nervous wreck
oh hell yes
the drugs just make me reset
knock once for the father,
twice for the son
three times for the holy ghost
(3 times)
three times for the holy ghost
(3 times)
three times for the holy ghost

Florence + the Machine – Drumming Song Lyrics 13 years ago
Yes, I totally love this idea! Here's another spin on it, what if she's the victim? Her heart is beating from fear and she's scared that he can hear her. What if the drumming is her head throbbing from pain he induced? Your idea makes more sense, but it's still interesting.

Florence + the Machine – My Boy Builds Coffins Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this is about a guy who creates massive problems for the people around him. It doesn't matter who they are. He gives them, his love, and himself, hell. He doesn't care about life or people. He leads everyone down the wrong path, whether it be a literal or spiritual death. I don't think he does it on purpose, it just happens.

Florence + the Machine – Between Two Lungs Lyrics 13 years ago
To me, this song is about being super passionate about something you want to do with your life. I guess the singer knows what direction she wants to go, but she's stuck. She's trying to make her life how she wants it, but she's young and doesn't know how to do it. She feels like time is running out. Therefore, she always nervous, always holding her breath. Then things change, she reaches her goal. She releases that trapped breath. She meets someone else like her. They too have been holding their breath. now they're each other's inspiration, and they're looking a life from a new better place. They hope it lasts.

Joanna Newsom – Colleen Lyrics 14 years ago
This song actually inspired a story for me. I won't go into the details of my story, but will give my opinion on the song. I feel like Colleen was some sort of mystical water creature, possibly a mermaid or a siren. In my story she is a siren. I think she was captured and then lost memory of who or what she was. These people have described the sea as something dangerous, an enemy that has hurt her. She was taken to land and taught to be a regular woman. They teach her chastity prayers because she is so beautiful that they fear she will garner a great deal of sexual attention. They tell her she's lucky not to remember anything, because in her old life she was a whore or thief. She can't do practical work because she was meant for something better, it makes her seem useless but that's not the reality of the situation. She overwaters everything because she's tied to the water. She feels like somethings missing, but feels like she shouldn't think so, because everyone keeps telling her how blessed she is. She dreams of life in the sea, and how she belongs there. A whale speaks to her in a dream and feels betrayed, because she's wearing his baleen. Some men from the sea, probably sailers come to town and one recognizes her as what she is. She recognizes the whale image from her dream and asks what it is. He understands that her longing for the sea is still there. He won't speak her name because of her mystical properties and powers. He says that she let them change her. She says that's true but she knows that she's not Colleen or a "girl", but something more significant. He tells her to go back to the sea and he'll go with her.
