Santigold – Disparate Youth Lyrics 8 years ago
I believe that this song is about institutionalized and systematic racism against African Americans.

First off, the definition of "Disparate" is: "essentially different in kind; not allowing comparison." The African American race is unique and unlike all of the others. And this song is a message to the "Youth."

"Don't look ahead, there's stormy weather
Another roadblock in our way
But if we go, we go together
Our hands are tied here if we stay"

This first verse of the song is a call to unite, there is more power in numbers, especially against the dominant "White" upper class. They are becoming aware of their oppression and learning how to combat it. They can't let doubt and self-loathing, or "stormy weather" get in their way if they are going to defeat discrimination. They must "go together" so start a revolution.

"Oh, we said our dreams would carry us
And if they don't fly we will run
Now we push right past to find out
Oh how to win what they have lost"

The "dreams" she is singing of are the same dreams Martin Luther King Jr. spoke about in his famous speech. If their "dreams" are not enough to move them spiritually, they will move physically. When she sings about "winning" what "they" have "lost", she speaks of humanity. The oppressors have lost their humanity, and that is what African Americans, even after being enslaved, segregated, imprisoned, disenfranchised, and killed, still have left, or have to find within themselves. (Refer to Paulo Freire's "Pedagogy of the Oppressed.")

The chorus/hook is self-explanatory. They've tasted what a bit of freedom was like, and now they want more, and are willing to fight for it.

"So let them say we can't do better
Lay out the rules that we can't break
They wanna sit and watch you wither
Their legacy's too hard to take"

This first half of the second verse is very similar to Audre Lorde's "The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master's House." Marginalized peoples can't use the tools that were used to marginalize them to break free. They must create new tools, or in this case, "rules." "Their legacy" is hard to take because they have been at the top of the societal hierarchy for generations, thriving off of privilege and entitlement. They subordinate Blacks and use negative stereotypes to "sit and watch" them "wither", and make them internalize that "they can't do better." (Refer to the "Stereotype Threat")

"In their heads pledging their beds
In their eyes it shows
When the freedom breaks
Well then if you ask and they don't know
Oh tell me that
I turn my back while the odds all stand beneath me
And they all said I was mislead
But now the odds all stand beneath me"

The bridge/climax is a bit harder to deconstruct. I see "In their heads pledging their beds, in their eyes it shows" as the "superior" class realizing they have to give up their domination. They act as if they "don't know" that African Americans are capable human beings. Here, Santigold is declaring her freedom, she was able to overcome their binds, despite everyone saying she was "mislead."

The last lines of the song validate the bridge/climax, and now that the African American race is on a mission to gain their human rights, nothing can stop them.

I think that the music video works to further prove this interpretation. The imagery shows Santigold dreaming, and within her dream, she is sharing her vision with others, in solidarity. She is leading the children to form an army that will be fearless in fighting against the oppression of the higher class. Santigold actually majored in African American Studies, so some of my references may be ones she intentionally drew from. I think a few of her songs are focused on self-empowerment as well, this being another one of them.

The XX – Together Lyrics 10 years ago
Such a beautiful song from The Great Gatsby soundtrack. I'm pretty sure they wrote it based on the interpretation of a scene working alongside Baz Luhrmann and Anton Monsted. It fits the narrative perfectly with such a mysterious, somber tone that fits the tragic love story. Can't help but become obsessed with this tune.

I do agree with several of the comments claiming that this song is about war and a plea for us to stand up to our government who deems us seem so powerless and weak, however, I also think that this song is about pollution and the destruction we've done to our own environment.

The lyrics themselves mention and/or repeat "pesticide", "steel machines", "polluted coasts", etc. And "Breathing each other's lives" can mean not only that we are responsible for each other's lives, but that we are literally breathing in the air that equals life, and this air is polluted by all of the greenhouse gases and harmful chemicals, etc. that most government run corporations/organizations continue use. So it's not just a call to action, but also a message to remind us of all the damage that's already been done and that's still in progress.

I'm not saying they do or don't, I'm just saying that many women resent that role and seek to be equal in a relationship. That's just a possible interpretation of the song.

Oh, and it can also be about domestic relationships. How women have to be a proper wife by cooking and becoming a slave for their husbands. The lyrics may show resentment for this aspect of relationships. IDK, just a thought. . .

Crystal Castles – Courtship Dating Lyrics 12 years ago
This song always gets stuck in my head, epically.

I think that in order to find the meaning of this song, we have to understand the title.
Courtship is when a couple is dating without much physical contact. Mainly between Christian couples, the couple will refrain from sex and other physical contact until marriage.
Dating, well, this definition is obvious.

Looking at the lyrics and listening to the way she sings them in the song, this song can sort of be one of immense emotional pain or symbolism, showing how girls can get hurt after being tricked into sinful, sexual things in a relationship. They ache for the desire but then are wounded afterwards.
I think it also represents how the body is seen as the "temple" in scripture, and how these wounds are sometimes physical, mental, and emotional.

I don't know, but that's what I get out of it.

Either way, it's an amazing song.

Shiny Toy Guns – You Are The One Lyrics 12 years ago
I love this particular song so much, and I might have commented on it before, but I don't care, I'll do it again.

Personally, I think that this song is about a man who is in love with a girl, but she has been hurt by another in the past and is denying her feelings for him because of what her last lover did to her. The man is so much in love with her, that to numb his pain in her denying him, he drinks and "takes what's evil".

Perhaps the first verse represents a dead gift he gave her "black rose, a rose that died, she neglected it to show she wasn't sure if she loves him back. "Radio fire" could represent the argument they're having about this desire they have for each other.

"You're cover melting inside
With wide eyes you tremble
Kissing over and over again
You God knows his faithful"

This stanza shows that the girl is doubting him being faithful to her, and only God truly knows if he's lying. It may seem like he has betrayed her, but she's not sure either, and she can't seem to stop kissing him either way, thus showing her suppressed passion for him.

In the chorus, he's just trying to reassure her that he's not lying, he is faithful, and that she's the one for him and he won't betray her or leave her as her last lover did. Hence, "alone again". I think that he is also overwhelmed or shocked by finding her and being in love. "You're more than in my head", as if she's not a figment of his imagination of a fantasy, she's the real deal.

"Spin faster shouting outloud
You can't steal what's paid for
It's just something hurting again
Murder some; she's painful"

In this first stanza of the 2nd verse, he's still referring to the argument they're having. By stating "You can't steal what's paid for", I think he means that he's not lying to her, because his love has already confirmed that she's the one "it's paid for" in a figurative sense, and no one can change that.
"It's just something hurting again", meaning she is just re-living feelings about her past lover
"Murder some", I think he's referring to how some men can hurt women
"She's painful", again, he notes that she is re-living heartbreak from the past.

"You so believer your own lies
On my skin your fingers
Runaway until the last time
We're gonna lose forever"

By stating this, she is still thinking he's being unfaithful to her, yet she is still seduced by him. I think that when she says "Runaway until the last time", she's speaking to herself and telling herself she needs to believe him or she can be losing out on a potentially powerful and beautiful relationship. "We're gonna lose forever", further proves the above statement and she could be speaking to both herself and him this time.

"When you try, don't try to say you won't
Try to crawl inside my head
When you cry, cause it's all built up inside
Your tears already said, already said"

In this stanza, he's telling her that she has to overcome her fear of being betrayed, and that she will because her desire is too strong to hold back. He's telling her to "crawl inside his head" so that she'll see he is being faithful and honest. He acknowledges her pain and tells her that he knows she's hurt, but still wants to be with him, and he can see this threw her emotions.

During the bridge of the song (where it gets really pretty) it almost sounds like church bells or an organ, as in maybe they're getting married, or showing that he truly wants to be with her and save her from her fears.

I don't know, this is just how I look at it, but if they truly did intend it to mean this, it's super beautiful. :D

Crystal Castles – Vanished Lyrics 12 years ago
I personally think that this song possibly has several meanings, but I think it's about prostitution or bad influences on young men and women.

The first verse is probably about a young man or teenager who is lurking the streets for a night on the town and looking for a good time. (going clubbing)
He probably encounters a promiscuous women or a prostitute. This is her life, it's better than death, but its still considered something that is the scum of the earth.
He has sex with her, doesn't regret it, and either she dies by suicide or feels as if she is dying on the inside because of her habits.

I don't know, that's what I get out of it.

I also find it awkward and contradicting that the song is so mellow and happy sounding when it can possibly be about such a negative, sad subject. But either way, I love it, it just sounds awesome and soothing! :D

wow, I love how this song has so many possible meanings, and the rhythm is simply amazing and the entire song itself is beautiful. Sort of reminds me of Silversun Pickups, but yeah. I think, regardless to all of the other meanings behind this song and the meanings Karen O intended it have, I also think it can mean how maps refer to traveling and when lover part, one leaves and the other stays behind. So either she's saying "They don't love like I love you" to her lover who is leaving to go to other parts of the world and visit new people and places, or he's saying it to her and she's telling the story of what happened and how she left him. Either way, it's awesome and beautiful as hell. I love it!! :D

I don't think the above lyrics to this song are correct.
This is how I think it goes:

Knocked down everything I tried to do
That sounds something like me holding you
I know this can make you understand
Take my spirit from my open hand

(Chorus)
You used to hold me
You used to hold me
You used to hold me, me, me, me, yeah (X3)

Me, me, me, yeah. . .

You know better than I do

Knocked down everything I tried to do
That sounds something like me holding you
I know this can make you understand
Take my spirit from my open hand

(repeat from Chorus)

You know better than I do.

(back to Chorus)

i always thought this song was about the loss of love, and having many lovers entering your life and then wanting to get away from it all afterwards, possibly dying on the inside from sorrow, and then having a new day to come and take it away. It's shocking to me that it's about drug addiction, but it makes sense I guess. Still, it's an incredible song, and I love it none the less. Shiny Toy Guns is awesome!
