Okay,I love the banjo and harmonica. Such a beautiful song. At first I couldn't decide if this was a positive or negative song and I think the reason that it's so difficult to understand is because it's both positive and negative (love/hate). First of all, he asks, when someone else hits on you,("when they call your name") will you go for it ("will you walk right up"), or will you remember me and stay back from them ("with an old love letter"). So, he's questioning where do we stand? Are you mine? He wants her so bad he wishes she would hang out with him. But maybe she won't maybe she is just stringing him along and he can't figure out what to do, let her keep using him or leave her. So he wants her to "fuck him up" screw his friends, etc. so he would know how she feels and he could move on and stop longing for her. But then he wonders if shes thinking of him. Maybe there is a hope that she'll love him ("do you wish i was there"). He just wants to know if she feels the same and if she will commit, and he can't let go of that hope. At the end, he just wants to decide. "I wish you'd make up my bed" felt to me like I wish you'd be mine, be the one who spends the night and wakes up and makes the bed for me. And he wishes he could make up his mind, love her or hate her for not loving him back. But she keeps giving him reasons to think maybe she will pick him. But he is definitely having some love/hate issues because if she can't decide if she wants him or not, he is left longing for her in agony. |
