St. Vincent – Huey Newton Lyrics 9 years ago
I agree with the interpretation that the song is about NEET internet trolls, and I have something to add about this line in particular:

"Oh, you got the pop in the hiss
In the city of misfits, you know"

I believe the actual lyric is "pop AND the hiss," and it would make sense if she's referring to hedgehog behavior. When hedgehogs feel threatened or just plain pissed off, they hiss and exhibit "popping" behavior, which is what it's called when they curl up and jerk/jump with their spines all up.

The lyric makes me think of the dumb little fights you see in internet comment threads, especially on sites like 4chan which are made up of people competing to be the biggest/toughest asshole. Having the "pop and the hiss" in the "city of misfits" is being the toughest and nastiest loser- but still a loser.

Keane – The Lovers Are Losing Lyrics 10 years ago
How I see it, the singer is actually speaking directly to their lover. They've both been trying to hold onto a relationship that is failing for whatever reason, and while the singer's come to accept that they need to let go, their lover hasn't yet.

"I dreamed I was drowning
In the river Thames
I dreamed I had nothing at all
Nothing but my own skin"

Drowning in dreams is usually said to mean that the dreamer feels overwhelmed with something in real life, as if they're literally sinking. I take the "nothing but my own skin" part to mean that the person kind of wishes for a return to something basic and original, utopian. That could be the origin of the relationship, or just a simpler time.

I dreamed I was drifting
On the howling wind
I dreamed I had nothing at all
Nothing but my own skin

The drifting thing is similar to the drowning, the sense of not knowing what you're doing and being unable to get a grip.

Slipped away from your open hand
Into the river
Saw your face looking back at me
I saw my past
And I saw my future

The singer can feel themself/their relationship slipping, and wholeheartedly believes that this other person/relationship is it for them. They feel overwhelmed by the loss of control because they can't picture life without them.

"You take the pieces of the dreams that you have
Cause you don't like the way they seem to be going
You cut them up and spread them out on the floor
You're full of hope as you begin rearranging
Put it all back together

The person knows that the relationship isn't working the way it is, but believes that if they can change a few things up and "put the relationship back together" it's going to work and they can still be with the singer.

But anyway you look at things and try
The lovers are losing

The singer is kind of saying "You can try to change things up as many times as you want, change yourself, change the situation, try to give it another go, but no matter how many times you do this, it's not going to turn out the way you'd like." The singer is basically telling the subject, who we can assume is their lover, that it's okay to let go.

I dreamed I was watching
A young lover's dance
I reached out to touch your hand
But I was watching from a distance

The singer already recognizes that there's a space between them and their lover that they can no longer hope to bridge.

We cling to love like a skidding car
Clinched(Clings?) to the corner
I try to hold on to what we are
The more I squeeze the quicker we all are (I've heard "the quicker we're over" for this and also "the quicker we alter" and I'm usually inclined to go with the latter option)

The singer knows that both of them have been holding onto this for much too long and re-iterates that the harder he grasps at the relationship, the faster it slips away/changes.

It all more or less repeats after that, but there it is. Of course, with the more worldly themes in Perfect Symmetry, I wouldn't be surprised if there was another, broader one that's equally valid. There probably is.

It's a beautiful song any way. Five years after the first listen and I haven't gotten tired yet. Keane is brilliant, in the sense that they shine.

Phoenix – If I Ever Feel Better Lyrics 11 years ago
I agree that this song is from the perspective of a guy with depression or an anxiety disorder, who's trying to cope with it, work through it and maintain his relationships.

However, when it comes to the refrain

"If I ever feel better
Remind me to spend some good time with you
You can give me your number
When it's all over I'll let you know"

I almost detect a hint of irony in there, as if he might be speaking to a person who wants a relationship with the depression-free version of him, and is unable to accept that he might often be this way. Like "Oh yeah, i'm trying to deal with these problems, let me give you a ring when it'll be more convenient for you."

Maybe i'm reading too much into it, but I can't shake that interpretation from my mind. Great song, either way!

Keane – Clear Skies Lyrics 11 years ago
The lyrics here need editing.

"Take my pills on a winter sleep
I send myself to sleep"

I believe should read

"Took my pills and I went to sleep
I sang myself to sleep"

and

"And I wish that I could stay
My faith you way you do"

sounds like it should be
"And I wish that I could STAKE
my faith the way you do"

Either way, this song is beautiful. I've wanted to live in a very big city my whole life and have had to stay contented with living a ways out of one, up until now. I'm planning on going away to university in one of the biggest next year, and I think I've heard few other songs that have managed to capture the gorgeously risky feeling of being in such a big and difficult place.

Keane – Black Rain Lyrics 11 years ago
I don't know if i'm correct or not, I don't have the lyric booklet on hand, but I think the first verse goes

"Down on my luck, breathing my last
dirty your hands, carry me home."

That's what I always hear, at least.

I don't know why this song doesn't have any comments. I think it's remarkable in how eerie and quiet it sounds. There's a certain feeling that it evokes exceedingly well.

Whatever it's about, the song has a general feeling of emptiness, despondence, eerie quiet, a void. I think there are a vast number of possible correct interpretations.

I agree completely with you. I just saw the Wall live last night, and the way they played it blew my mind. The guitar solo was one of the most powerful bits of the concert, I was in awe. Compared to that, the album version, while still great, is a little lacking.

Pink Floyd – The Great Gig in the Sky Lyrics 13 years ago
About the singer, i've heard she was a backup/some sort of artist at Abbey Road Studios, and the band just went to her, described what they wanted her to do and let her record what she wanted, and paid her thirty bucks/the equivalent in pounds for it. Apparently, she was embarrassed to give the tape to them, but they loved it and used it as it was.

Other than that, definitely about death, not being afraid of it, etc. The "Great ___ in the Sky" is an expression commonly used to refer to death. For a musician, it would be a gig.

Pink Floyd – The Happiest Days of Our Lives Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is completely self-explanatory, and while usually seen as an intro into "Another Brick in the Wall part II", stands on it's own very well.

It's a cycle of cruelty and oppression. The teachers are abused by their wives, so they take it out on the kids, where it, in turn, eats away at them. The title is extremely sarcastic. While your childhood and school days are often said to be the happiest days of your life (and for many, they are), they obviously weren't for Roger Waters. Considering the school system in England, especially at that time, that's no surprise.

"I don't need no arms around me" isn't referring to straitjacket arms,it's referring to the arms of a lover or friend. He's lost his wife by this point, and has convinced himself he doesn't need love or companionship.

Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 1 Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is one of my favourites on the album. It's about Pink's struggle with being fatherless, and how not having one was one of the first in a long list of bricks in the wall that shut him off from the world.

"Daddy's flown across the ocean"
Water's father died in WWII, when he was just a baby. The same with Pink. Both of them probably never met their fathers, and wouldn't remember if they had.

"Leaving just a memory...
A snap shot in the family album"
All he will ever know about his dad comes from memories his mother has, or photos.

"Daddy what else did you leave for me
Daddy what d'ya leave behind for me
All in all it was all just a brick in the wall
All in all it was all just bricks in the wall"

He's lamenting the fact that he never knew his father, and sounds very angry probably becuase he is. He's angry (irrationally) with his father for leaving him, and with the wold in general. The loss of his father was a brick in the wall.

For some reason, no matter how many times I listen to this, I always tear up at the "Daddy, what'dya leave behind for me?" His voice sounds so emotional at that part, and so angry, it makes me emotional just listening to it.

Pink Floyd – Us and Them Lyrics 13 years ago
I love this song, and while it's about war, on a larger scale, it's about human nature in general.

However, one thing here is KILLING me. The four lines at the end
"...out of the way, it's a busy day
I've got things on my mind
for want of the price of tea and a slice
the old man died ..."

Have always been the most touching in this song, and nobody else seems to see them the same way I always have. I've always interpreted the old man as a beggar, and the four lines a somber commentarty on how we treat our own people. The "...With, Without..." in the line before is referring to money, the root of all the fighting.
The man saying "...out of my way - on my mind..." is a man "with", perhaps a buisnessman of some sort. The old man is without, a beggar who doesn't even have the money to buy lunch. And just because the buisnessman is worried about things as trivial as getting to work on time, or thinking about the work he is going to have to do at his job, he doesn't even stop and give his fellow human being the time of day, or the five bucks/pounds/whatever to buy food. We're all human beings, and we're all we have on this Earth, so what's being said is that we should be kinder to one another.

Keane – Clear Skies Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is so beautiful, I'm dissapointed it has only three comments. When I heAr it, I think it's about becoming ensnared in the beauty of a city, and the fast paced excitement of life in one. The lines "and it's further to fall down, 'cause you fly so high" are referring to how glamorous and exciting everything seems, and how high people in the city appear to live, but how that can shatter in an instant, and come crashing down around them. "I've never seen such high hopes/tired eyes" supports this as well, because I see it as people in the city having big dreams, and working hard to attain them, often with little success, making them tired and embittered. "Clear skies gonna fall on you" is the dream inevitably falling apart, and crashing down on the person. Just my rough interpretation, I'm not very good at putting my thoughts into words.

Pink Floyd – One of My Turns Lyrics 13 years ago
The title "One of My Turns" explains everything. A "turn" is a severe mood swing. Pink flips his lid because he's so angry about this relationship wasting away to nothing, and gets violent. Kind of bipolar...

Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2 Lyrics 13 years ago
The song's obviously about the school system in England at the time the writer was experiencing it.
The "We don't need no education/thought control" speaks for itself pretty much, about how strict and controlling the system was, trying to teach the children to think a certain way.

"Another brick in the wall" refers to a mental/emotional wall, with difficult experiences helping to create a wall around the person, making them cut off from the world, numb and unfeeling.

Great song.

Keane – Stop For A Minute Lyrics 13 years ago
I can't believe there aren't more comments on this song, I love it.
It's definitely about stopping and having introspective moments, thinking about yourself.

The lines "Without you i'm a child/ liner stranded in an ice floe" completely make this song, because with them, you realize that when he "stops for a minute", what he thinks about )and it's kind of a frightening thought, sometimes, to need someone that much) is that he absolutely needs this other person, to help him find direction.

At least, that's how I see it, and that's how I want to see it.
He needs this person (K'Naan's part makes it pretty clear this is a lover he's talking about, in my opinion, they give him direction and help him out with everything, he feels lost without them. I think it's a sweet thought.

I don't know what the individual lines all mean, but this is the general idea.

Keane – Pretend That You're Alone Lyrics 13 years ago
I have a hard time disliking anything Keane comes out with, because they're brilliant, but "And love is just our way Of looking out for ourselves
When we don't want to live alone" kind of turned me off this song because of how absolutely cynical and jaded it sounds.

I know it may just be me, or it may be that i'm not cynical enough, or simply that i'm interpreting this wrong, like this was written because he felt cynical after having his heart broken, but something about him saying "Basically, there is no such thing as true love, it's something we as humans have made up from selfish instinct." made me completely unable to connect with this, because I think of love as the most unselfish thing out there.

Still an absolutely great band, though. Just not a fan of this song.

Well, at least they don't make music like "short bus people", which you might considering how jealous you seem.

And that's all that counts, seeing as they are musicians, not supermodels.
And damn good ones too.

The hell?

I'm sorry, but it really bothers me that people can find a way to say that every song is about drugs. Some songs just aren't about drugs, no hidden meanings.

This song is about friendship, plain and simple.

I guess "sail on silver girl" could be interpreted as heroin, but that doesn't fit the rest of the song.

Billy Joel – Piano Man Lyrics 14 years ago
You don't know what really happened to this guy, stop being so skeptical. If you live on Long Island, where Billy is from, you have a good chance of seeing him stopping by somewhere.

Now, you probably won't believe me either, but my Grandfather was sitting at a bar with him a few years ago, and talking. He was apparently wearing sunglasses or a hat, and though he is an avid fan, my grandfather didn't recognize him. He talked to him for a while, and bought him a drink, and just as he got up to leave, he stopped and said "Billy Joel?".

You can keep doubting everyone, but not everyone lies. :)
And if you are still skeptical, that's ok. Because I know what happened, and that's what matters to me.

Lady GaGa – Summerboy Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm suprised this doesn't get more play time, it's one of my favorites on the album.

It's obviously about Summer Romance, like the classic story of a girl going to a summer home, meeting a boy, fooling around, knowing full well this is just a fling and it will end when fall comes around.

Great song!

Keane – Spiralling Lyrics 14 years ago
I think people need to stop trashing this song becuase Keane has changed. Every good band needs to change at some point, or else it would get to the point where they were not progressing as artists, merely refeeding us the same old stuff.

The fact that this is different from older stuff means that they are progressing.

Anyway, it's not bad. I actually love this song.
I think it's about how people always want something, and nobody can ever really get exactly what they want, be it love, success, fame, wealth. They can plan their future as well as they want but things happen and you can't plan for everything. Great lyrics.
