OneRepublic – All The Right Moves Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I know I'll probably get some opposition to this, but I first of all want to say what this song means TO ME...I'm not so sure if it's the same view as OneRepublic had in mind, but I've actually seen some similar undertones in their other songs, such as 'Prodigal' and 'Mercy'. So, here it goes: I think that this song has a very religious undertone and represents a person who is struggling with their faith. They want to be Christ-like and do God's will, but they are scared and unprepared: "It don't matter what you see I know I could never be Someone that'll look like you It don't matter what you say I know I could never face Someone that can sound like you " Also, they are uncertain of their purpose in life and hesitant to believe that God's will is what their life should be led by. They question their abilities and their own strength in questioning their calling: "Do you think I'm special, do you think I'm nice Am I bright enough to shine in your spaces" They address their complacency, in that they are acting through the Christian motions, but not living a truly Godly life, just sinking in amongst the crowd of faces of nominal and hypocritical Christians: "Between the noise you hear and the sound you like Are we just sinking in the ocean of faces" They address the fact that they are facing hardships in their life but feel as if God is distant from them and too far to help them amidst their troubling times: "It can't be possible, the rain can fall Only when it's over our heads The sun is shining everyday but its far away Over the world..." In this section, the person is talking about heaven and how hard it is for Christians to battle against evil, immoral, and ungodly things here on earth. He is saying that those already in heaven have it good because they are there with God and his Son, Jesus Christ (the king of hearts and the queen of spades). He then talks about how each day is a day closer to heaven but he doesn't know if he is strong enough to live like Christ and not be overcome by worldly things and make it through the gates of heaven: "Let's paint the picture of the perfect place They got it better than what anyone's told you There'll be the king of hearts and you're the queen of spades And we'll fight for you like we were your soldiers I know we got it good, but they got it made And the grass is getting greener each day I know things are looking up, but soon they'll take us down Before anybody's knowing our name" Once again, I think that this person is speaking of the two-faced quality of a majority of the Christian population today...those who desire money, fame, and recognition instead of seeking the face of God. He is saying that although people act "godly" (or their view of godly) throughout their daily lives, they still are in it for the wrong reasons and are not giving themselves over completely to God. This person says that these people will be overcome by evil and wordly desires and "go down", or fall down, from their high pedestals and fall out of God's favor. "They got all the right friends in all the right places So yeah, we're going down They got all the right moves in all the right places So yeah, we're going down Said everybody knows, everybody knows where we're going Yeah, we're going down" So, there it is. |
