Morbid Angel – Dawn Of The Angry Lyrics 19 years ago
i stumbled on to this looking for something else, never even heard of this band, and i've just got to say that i can't decide whether this argument is really funny or really sad. but, either way i was briefly entertained.

Toadies – Away Lyrics 19 years ago
i can see the religious connotations and definitely agree with banana5050 about the 'and i confess a shiver" line being about getting the goosebumps (and seriously, what a damn eloquent way to write ive got the goosebumps). but...

the thing is, i find the song more sinister than mellow, so i dont know that the religious themes people are getting out of it (if they even are really present) are meant to be sincere or cynical. something about the guitar riff during the verses: its a quieter, maybe even more elaborate version of the riff that's played at the beginning of the song and between the verses. its almost like its sneaking almost out of earshot under the vocals and creates a gradual tension. especially since other songs on the album have extremely sinister storylines (tyler, possum kingdom) i feel like that tense feeling in the song probably does reflect the subject matter somehow. also, at the end during the "come right on in's", i'm always waiting for it to turn into the quiet "do you want to die" part of possum kingdom.

Franz Ferdinand – So Come On Home Lyrics 20 years ago
i think "so i'm dissatisfied, i love dissatisfied, i love to feel there's always more that i need" sums up the song pretty well. i definitely also see how it's a song that is pretty open to various interpretations, but what i get from it is that if everythng is perfect, it gets boring, even in relationships. it might be taking the "my lover lives in a place that i can't live" line too literally to say it's about a long distance relationship, but that does make sense with the rest of the lyrics. it could also be an off again on again relationship. this is lyrically my favorite franz song, if only for the way that the last two lines tie back into the whole dissatisfied part. when he first says it, you might not buy it that he really likes to be dissatisfied in life, but then he tells you to leave and suddenly you take his love of dissatisfaction seriously.

Wilco – How To Fight Loneliness Lyrics 20 years ago
i just found out something pretty damn funny: this song is on a cd entitled "martha stewart living- quiet time". it's a collection of songs that are meant to be nice and relaxing. so martha stewart is misinterpreting a song about putting on a fake happy face to the world. the irony...

Wilco – I Am Trying to Break Your Heart Lyrics 20 years ago
i assumed the "assasin down the avenue" part meant drinking and driving. i mean, if he just drank an aquarium's volume in alcohol, it makes sense.

to quote icy40oz:
I like the "I assassin down the avenue" line. he doesn't just shuffle, walk or stalk...he assassins.

i like that interpreation a lot, but in my mind if he's assasining (um, pretend its a word), it really implies a sense of recklessness and disregard for anyone you might hurt, and for me that line is the one that gets across the alcoholism in this song the most strongly. i can just see a guy shitfaced and careening around in a car he can barely control

the chorus is beautiful. makes me think of all those people from grade school, high school, college that you know you'll never see again after graduation. theyre just frozen in your past unchanging.

Kings of Leon – Talihina Sky Lyrics 20 years ago
yeah, im also surprised no ones commented. theyre a pretty damn good band, although sometimes calebs overly slurred together vocals do get on my nerves (aka trani), actually caleb himself is kind of, not necessarily annoying, but yeah, a little annoying. i saw them open for the strokes in october (and actually ended up meeting both bands through sheer luck), and everytime calebs hair got out of place he stopped playing and smoothed it out, and he did that every couple of minutes throughout their set. okay, i spose thats not so very annoying, but it IS really funny watching a singer groom himself when the rest of the band is rocking out. also, he was wearing a scarf and boots with pretty high heels/platforms for a guy because hes so short. haha, sorry, i swear i do think this band is great despite my making fun of them, and sorry im really not commenting on talihina sky (great hidden track), but if you ever get to see caleb fuss over his appearance on stage, you'll understand just how funny it is.

Beulah – If We Can Land a Man on the Moon, Surely I Can Win Your Heart Lyrics 21 years ago
I didn't even think about it being Beatlesish, but I can definitely hear that. This song is just peppy (that's such a horrible word, I know!, but it's true) and fun. This is exactly why I love to find random songs from bands I've never heard of and download them!

Dispatch – Two Coins Lyrics 21 years ago
i agree with silverpuppiez about the coins representing death. it was the first thing i envisioned when i heard the line 'the two coins of your eyes'. the rest of the lines just sound kind of ambiguous to me, i dont really know what to make of them. great song though

Wilco – How To Fight Loneliness Lyrics 21 years ago
i dont think the smoke reference is literal. its more like hes saying theres smoke instead of substance in your heart, theres ghosts of emotion instead of the real thing. the whole song is about pretending to be happy for the appearance of it (shine your teeth to meaningless, sharpen them with lies). if you know anyone like this, then this song just makes a lot of sense

Bright Eyes – You Will. You? Will. You? Will. You? Will. Lyrics 21 years ago
i have a question: is the very end of the song part of what the girl is writing to him (starting from 'go explore...') or is it from his point of view again? i can see it either way. it could either be a continuation of her wanting him to come back to her, or it could be him realizing that he kind of fucked things up with her and hoping she still feels the same way that she used to.

Bright Eyes – Motion Sickness Lyrics 21 years ago
i dont know why i care so much, but i absolutely love it when titles of songs arent just taken directly from the chorus or the lyrics of the song. when i read the last line of this song and then think about the title, its just like, damn, thats a good way of summing up the song into a good title.

Pearl Jam – Dissident Lyrics 21 years ago
im not calling anyone wrong, but i think the frist interpretation here (the one 'ed' wrote) is the meaning that eddie vedder intended for it. ive pretty sure ive read that before but i dont remember where so you'll just have to take my word for it ;-)

Bright Eyes – Going for the Gold Lyrics 21 years ago
scrape your heart: yeah, ive always interpreted it as the allegory of the cave, too. for some reason it just makes me fascinated with this song. jack johnsons inaudible melodies deals with the same thing. even if you don't like him, the lyrics to that song are interesting.

Bright Eyes – Bowl of Oranges Lyrics 21 years ago
as a painter, those last lines of the song are great. it reminds me of when people ask me why a certain work of art is good. i get really caught up in it and probably end up just confusing them more. but its just like, youre looking at something, and its beautiful, and you just cant find the words to describe it

Bright Eyes – Loose Leaves Lyrics 21 years ago
rob c kelly- i always think im reading too deeply into the connections within his lyrics, but you know what, i think hes just such a damn good lyricist that every little thing you notice was put there on purpose for you to notice. there are a lot of good songwriters out there, but not all lyrics work with out the music. connors lyrics read like poetry. theyre amazingly well structured by themselves, and are just enhanced by the music. and yeah, the connections bridge songs, too. hes so good incorporating all the songs into one theme, but still keeping them as individual elements. bright eyes isnt even my favorite band, and i dont know if connor is my favorite lyricist, but you cant help but be damn, damn impressed byt the stuff he writes

Pearl Jam – In Hiding Lyrics 22 years ago
i think this is eddies reflection over his own phobia of being famous. it starts with fame freaking him out and so he shuts himself in. ("lock the front door...pull the curtains down") but then he gets carried away and kind of paranoid ("seeing visions...") then hes mellowed and realized that fame is only a "state of mind"

Pearl Jam – Hail, Hail Lyrics 22 years ago
this is one of those moments in a relationship when youre so pissed at each other that you cant even think of why youre together in the first place ("are we bound out of obligation? is that all we got?") when you think of of happier times or other happy couples, you just get jealous of them ("hail hail the lucky ones, i refer to those in love") you dont even want to win the argument, you just want to end it and have things back to normal (i want to be your one. enough! you won!")

Pearl Jam – Given to Fly Lyrics 22 years ago
id say a majority of eddies lyrics are autobiographical or at least rooted in his actual experiences (like alive). so, with that in mind, i definitely see this song being about eddie. 1st stanza: hes in a bad mood and no one can cheer him up, so he goes off to be by himself.("couldve tuned in....nothing could save him") to relax, he goes surfing, and it puts him in a better mood because hes kind of a private, solitary guy and just spending some time on his own does him some good. ("a wave came crashing...delivered him wings") i think the flying on the wave is meant to be taken both literally and symbolically. going out and acting free makes him feel free.

2nd stanza: except that hes famous now so that feeling cant last. he cant just be himself because hes being watched and it makes him uncomfortable. ("faceless men"=crowds of people/media) overall, he can still be himself, but he does it subtly (instead of "flying" right in front of everyone, hes a "strange spot in the sky" far away)

i can see how the jesus intrepretation would work in this one case, but youve got to look at all his work. no offense to anyone who interpreted the song that way (or to jesus for that matter), but eddie just doesnt write songs about jesus. there are a lot that are spiritual or philosophical, but religious? i cant think of any. for the most part id describe them as introspective or highly emotional. if it being about jesus is your personal intrepretation, i think its a really intriguing idea, but if you think thats what eddie meant, im going to have to disagree with you.

Pearl Jam – Bugs Lyrics 22 years ago
its not about insects. its bugs as in listening devices. but its not about those either. basically, this song is a lot like corduroy or not for you or half the songs on vitalogy. as he gets more famous, his privacy is being invaded and its making him uncomfortable and confused. he doesnt know what to do about all the attention. in the end, everyone knows so much about him that its like hes naked.

Pearl Jam – Black Lyrics 22 years ago
its interesting, this song was never actually released as a single, but its one of their most widely known songs. epic was really pressuring the band to agree to release it, and i guess when eddie first heard a radio station play it, he called the station and asked if the record company told them to do it. he was pissed.

im never sure what to make of this song. the first stanza and other lines like "ill see you on the other side" make it sound like hes dying, but half the time it just sounds like a 'its not you its me' type of breakup where hes saying he loves her but he has to go back home

U2 – One Lyrics 22 years ago
its not so much about love between 2 people, but rather love among everyone. i dont know if youve seen the video, but the whole band dresses in drag in it. thats part of the statement of the song showing that it doesnt matter who you are, man or woman, straight or gay, that everyone is a part of humanity. to further incorperate the idea of many things being one, u2 actually shot a few different videos for the song (3, maybe 4), but the one with them in drag was the first one shown and it got such a good response that mtv never bothered to air the alternate videos.

Pearl Jam – Even Flow Lyrics 22 years ago
amunkey, its not that they cant cope with the fact that theyre homeless, its that they cant cope with life. most people with process schizophrenia (they develop the disease slowly throughout their life, usually starting at puberty) end up homeless. youre right on about the 'thoughts like butterflies'. the main symptom of schizophrenia is disorganized, illogical thought processes. if youve ever met someone who suffers from this disease, its scary how easily you could imagine them being the person in this song.

Pearl Jam – Dead Man Lyrics 22 years ago

i just hope i dont associate this song with car commercials for the rest of my life...

The Who – My Generation Lyrics 22 years ago
theyre not praising their generation, theyre making fun of it. roger's stutter was an imitation of people who were on amphetamines (amphetamines were widely used to lose weight in the 60's). the whole song is a parody of the pill-popping mod scene.

The Who – Pinball Wizard Lyrics 22 years ago
petes mentor, meher baba, taught that people cant perceive god if they can perceive earthly things. this theory inspired pete to write about a boy who was deaf, mute, and blind, but later regained his senses and taught people what he learned about god while he could not sense the world around him. Halfway through recording the album, rock critic nik cohn gave the work-in-prgoress a mediocre review. pete knew that cohn was an avid pinball player, and so he told him that a twist in the story was coming where tommy became a pinball phenomenon. cohn loved the idea, and so pete wrote pinball wizard.

The Who – Baba O'Riley Lyrics 22 years ago
ive read/seen several interviews with pete where he either implies or flat out says that this song is about vietnam, but ive never heard why. the way i see it is that the song is from the point of view of a refugee from communist north vietnam. he doesnt want to be involved in the war ("i dont need to fight to prove im right"), he just wants to live normally and he can only doing that by escaping to south vietnam ("travel south crossland"). i think the chorus comes from the fact that the war devestated vietnam both economically and enviromentally (the "wasteland"), and that when pete wrote this song in 1971, americans had been occupying vietnam for well over a decade (and so, "teenage").

the title comes from 2 names: meher baba, petes mentor, and terry o'riley, a minimalist composer who inspired pete. pete set up a way to program information about people into a synthesizer so that every person would have a unique melody. he programmed in information about meher baba, such as his birthdate and his height, and came up with the background melody of baba oriley. the original loop was over 9 minutes long, but it was shortened for the song. people dont realize how revolutionary the whos synthesizer use was. now, every other song you hear has a synth loop, but in 1971, basically the only people experimenting with them in their music were the who and stevie wonder.

rage werent politicians. sure, they sang about important global issues, but what did they actually do about them? and sure, you can sit there and agree with what theyre saying and congradulate them for being ballsy enough to say it, but what are you doing about it? i like rages music a lot, but actions speak louder than words, and im only hearing lots of words from the band and fans alike. raising awareness does count for something, but pratice what you preach.

Ben Folds Five – Smoke Lyrics 22 years ago
my first instinct was that this song was about book burning and the ignorance behind it, but once i sat down and read the lyrics, i think what made me see how it was about the end of a relationship was the very last line: we are smoke. it has such a sense of finality. its wonderful that this song can make so much sense on a literal or symbolic level, and that the symbolism doesnt hit you over the head. its subtle.
