The Prodigy – Take Me To The Hospital Lyrics 11 years ago
Really think of this every time they took me to the hospital to lock me up and shoot me up with antipsychotics and tranquilizers when I was manic. Also think of it, because it's where you are when you're born, most the time, and where you go when you're dying. I love hospitals. It's why I work in one. To help. I'm here to help. I love the way they look at it. Losing your mind. Think outside the lines, dissolve them. Madness sets you free. <3

P.O.D. – Sleeping Awake Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's about literally what it says. That we're all sleeping awake. That Zion is right in front of us. That everything in our lives points toward it. These motions and metaphors, expressions keep pushing me. It's a real place, and we're already in it.

Yann Tiersen – Monochrome Lyrics 14 years ago
This song seems to be pretty obviously about the depression that ensues after an unwilling separation from one's significant other - by their choice. "But don't be scared, I found a good job and I go to work every day on my old bicycle you loved"... honestly, I do not get the impression that who he's singing to here is dead. I just imagine he's speaking to an ex-lover. You could say they're dead, sure, but I'm just going by Occam's Razor here.

Porcupine Tree – Waiting (Phase One) Lyrics 14 years ago
Okay, let me take a stab at this.

Waiting... to be born again

(He feels failure, he feels lost. "To be born again" = redemption, to live life again with meaning)

Wanting... the saddest kind of pain (this can be read two ways: 1) he wants the saddest kind of pain, or 2) wanting IS the saddest kind of pain. so, he either wants pain, or he feels it because he wants. based on another version of this song I've heard where the lyrics here are slightly different, I've recently learned it is in fact the first interpretation, which is unfortunate to me.)
Waiting for the day when I will crawl away (hopelessness... thinking he SHOULD crawl away, just go away.)

Nothing is what I feel (feels nothing)
Waiting... for the drugs to make it real (wants life to feel real again, but it's all dead)
Waiting... for the day when I will crawl away

Waiting... to be disciplined (pretty clear)
Aching... for your nails across my skin (I immediately think of a sexual scene. I'm thinking this whole song is about the failure of a perhaps unhealthy relationship where he was quite submissive, willingly.)
Waiting... for the day when I will crawl away

Porcupine Tree – Always Never Lyrics 14 years ago
I feel no pain
Cause I'm an island (alienation)
I will remain
In the deafness of your silence (estrangement)

I love you sometimes (maybe?)
Always Never (it's false)
He said you're here (who's he?)
Here with me now (let's imagine the narrator)

I feel no gain
When you're around me (straightforward)
I'll try again
In the darkness you astound me (sex? or maybe metaphorical darkness referring to distance and separation)

It's growing cold
I'm growing old
Is this the only way to see the fire?
It's raining...

(this WHOLE verse could be another song - it's probably, save the first two lines of the song, the most meaningful to me... it's about realizing how close death is, how letting go, how losing things ...is it the only way to fully appreciate it all? and the fire's going out when it's all too late... it's raining... depressing as hell)

Porcupine Tree – Blackest Eyes Lyrics 14 years ago
I know the theme of the album is allegedly about a serial killer, but you really could interpret this song pretty innocuously. Just all about a kid who's growing up, feeling for a girl, maybe his first, maybe not. He's seeing his own "loose wiring", things that don't make sense. This doesn't necessarily imply mental illness. No one's perfect. But, as for "blackest eyes", it's about him recognizing his own dark side - and he wants her to embrace it with him.

A mother sings a lullabye to her child (in the past)
Sometime in the future the boy goes wild (jumping to the present)
And all his nerves are feeling some kind of energy (sexual)

Walk in the woods and I will try (maybe reminiscent, maybe hypothetical)
Something UNDER the trees that made you cry (this could be ANYTHING - I honestly never, ever thought rape until I came here)
It's so erotic when your makeup runs (well I admit, it sort of is, and this is a wonderful lyric)

I got wiring loose inside my head (don't we all? who is society's perfect robot?)
I got books that I never ever read (simple fact, maybe alluding to procrastination or pointlessness)
I got secrets in my garden shed (why "garden shed" in particular? could mean anything.)
I got a scar where all my urges bled (ah, don't we all?)
I got people underneath my bed (admittedly, this lyric doesn't make much sense unless it's being jocular or literal)
I got a place where all my dreams are dead (again, don't we all?)
Swim with me into your blackest eyes (he just wants to let go and indulge with her his deepest fantasies)

A few minutes with me inside my van
Should be so beautiful if we can
I'm feeling something taking over me (and this whole verse basically sums it up)

Overall, yes, a pretty perverse, sexual interpretation on my part. Better than rape, though.

Porcupine Tree – Collapse The Light Into Earth Lyrics 14 years ago
Yes, the one on Out Absentia is ...amazing. As for this one...

Well, I've been feeling a break up very intensely... I can't honestly say I don't think of it like that. About it being about the sun setting... I think that's awesome. I never even thought of it like that. "Collapse the light into earth." Makes so much more sense to me.

Porcupine Tree – Fear of a Blank Planet Lyrics 14 years ago
Okay, I know this is pretty predictable, but for anyone who's really missing the major theme here...

"How can I be sure I'm here?
The pills that I've been taking confuse me
I need to know that someone sees that
There's nothing left, I simply am not here"

"The prescription drugs
You'll never find a person inside"

The entire song is fairly straightforward. Really, I think the narrator has legit reasons to be depressed, and sees the medications for what they are - distraction, numbing agents, something to bury the real issues and himself, and consequently, he sees many things in life just like that. He sees society for all its bullshit and emptiness, its want to just turn away and bury things in meaningless sense stimuli to numb pain and distract. And he's clearly missing something fundamental and important to him. Maybe he doesn't even know what that is anymore. Pretty terrible.

Great song.

Porcupine Tree – Glass Arm Shattering Lyrics 14 years ago
I feel a connection to this song unlike any other PT song I know. It's fucking beautiful. The only thing that throws it off for me is the "La, sha-la-la-la" segment because it's quite disjointing it seems. Other than that, it's just something I can unwind to. It makes me think of my first love.

Feeling all your touching (memories)
Feeling all your blood (death)
Feeling all your touching (memories)
Feeling all your love (memories)

Seen it through a windscreen (demise)
Seen it through the cloud (this lyric is... incorrect. it's "seen it through the GLASS" - and that's kind of like saying, imagined something before it happened, from the outside where he could not affect it)
Seen it in a bad dream (imagining, not wanting it to happen)
Seen it in your heart (knowing it to be true in the other's heart)

I think it's about the ending of a relationship, cast onto the metaphor of a car crash.

Porcupine Tree – Lips of Ashes Lyrics 14 years ago
You know, I try not to read too much into Porcupine Tree's literal lyrics, but do more, broad and metaphorical interpretations of certain lines to fit into an overall, relatable feeling, because that's just one way I can truly appreciate it. I think this song, as beautiful as it is, is about estrangement from someone he loves, and subsequent depression.

Paralysed
Lips of Ashes
Synchronised
Blue vein crashes

Touching you inside

Idolised
Black Eyes fading
You and I
Connection failing

I drill down inside (I draw my interpretation mainly from "touching you inside" and the last three lines... but obviously, I honestly do not believe that's the whole or necessarily real meaning behind the song. there's a lot more to it. "Black Eyes" obviously ties into track 1, a similar meaning. what's most important, though, I believe, is the last three lines. "I drill down inside" after a failed connection between two people... it's depression, it's attachment and loss. that's straightforward to me. it's trying to seek relinquishment from the hell one is experiencing by doing the only thing they CAN do... drilling down within themselves to find an answer, even if the ultimate answer is the inevitability of that hell.)

Porcupine Tree – Russia On Ice Lyrics 14 years ago
Seriously, don't listen to this after a complicated break up with your best friend. It'll have you lying in a bathtub drifting into nothingness, feeling the saddest kind of pain and wanting to die.

"I see the whole thing come down
I blow it to the ground
Well what the hell did you say?
You said you hate me this way"

Sends shivers down my spine.

Porcupine Tree – Pure Narcotic Lyrics 14 years ago
amatterofgrace: SPOT on, I think. I feel it. If it's not about that, it sure as hell is for me...

You keep me waiting (waiting on her)
You keep me alone in a room full of friends (he feels alone without her)
You keep me hating (himself, everything)
You keep me listening to the Bends (depressing music)

No amount of pointless days (pointless without her)
Can make this go away (it'll never be fixed without her)

You have me on my knees (straightforward)
You have me listless and deranged (he's losing his mind)
You have me in your pocket (he knows he's at her mercy)
You have me distant and estranged (distant and estranged)

No narcotics in my brain
Can make this go away (meds aren't going to help)

I'm sorry that, I'm sorry that I'm not like you (is he really?)
I worry that I don't act the way you'd like me to (insecurity)

You find me wanting (indeed)
You find me bloodless but inspired (doesn't want to let go)
You find me out (he's a let-down)
You find me hallucinating fire (honestly makes NO sense to me...)

No narcotics in my brain
Can make this go away

Have we ever been here before? (yes)
Running headlong at the floor (going nowhere with an argument)
Leave me dreaming on a railway track (she leaves him)
Wrap me up and send me back (rejection)
