Taking part of what RamblinRoger said into perspective, I think maybe it could be about a man looking back on a past relationship that he still hasn't gotten over. And it's really changed him, physically and emotionally. Maybe they broke up because of his busy lifestyle touring. He's trying to convince himself that this is just temporary, what he's currently feeling, but then he's saying he never wants to go through it again. I think the line my belongings scattered all across the hotel floor can be taken metaphorically too, meaning he's all over the place and isn't doing well keeping himself together. I'm not really too sure why the snack machine bit is relevant, maybe it's just saying that he thinks about the person all the time. He should be deciding what type of candy bar he wants and intead he is just thinking about her. Later he eats the candy bar and even though he's watching the greatest movie of the year it isn't exciting him because he feels too depressed. Then he says it's normal to be lonely and all he wants to know is what she's doing. Then the world spin around me to an old sad song line I think means that he's just watching the world go by and to him everything seems sad because that's the way he's feeling, it seems like there is a sad song behind everything because he's only thinking about the bad stuff because he's so down and upset. The coming down outside part could be literal, meaning it's raining, or metaphorical meaning again he's thinking about the bad things going on in the world and say
ing that everything is coming down, and this puts him into a sorry state and makes him sad. Looking back now I think it's finally time for me to laugh about it, I think that line means it's been so long since the relationship ended and he thinks he finally needs to get over it and put himself back together. Then the last verse, he feels awful. I think maybe he was the one who ended the relationship because it was so hard to have a relationship when he was so busy touring and going to so many places, so he regrets doing that and feels awful. He believes he is wasting his life being so miserable and the last line I think is the hardest to decipher, at least for me. Maybe it means if they stayed together he would never want to leave her and wouldn't be so successful? Not too sure on that. And obviously I could be wrong about my whole interperetation, I might be looking too far into it. But this is what I think it means, and I rather prefer having my own interperetation sometimes, that's what is so wonderful about lyrics, you can make them mean almost anything you want.

I looooove the song! The Killers NEVER disappoint!
I think it's about someone that's maybe been sleeping around and not taking relationships seriously so he wakes up next to this girl and thinks she's pretty and everything and he realized he's done the same thing again "what did you do this time" so then he tries to leave but she begs him to stay so he does. And then while they're dancing and kissing under the miseltoe he realizes that he doesn't want to get involved so he gets scared and leaves. And then later on he regrets that decision because he keeps thinking about her and he wants to "break the spell" of never being able to stay in a relationship.
And then I think the chorus is just basically saying that there are so many bad things going on right now, and life is difficult but it's Christmas time so you should just relax and enjoy life and enjoy the good things. So maybe that's him trying to tell himself to stop living life the way he has been and enjoy life and let himself fall in love. I don't know! |

Thank you Zeratul001 for letting everyone see the quote from the interview. I'm getting kinda annoyed with people thinking they wrote the song for the movie.
Anyway, I think this song is about two people in a relationship and maybe he's away a lot because of the "on the road" part. And then they break up and she's waiting for him to come back but "he isn't coming after all of this time." So then I think they're both upset about it and she's constanting thinking and dreaming about him "she likes the way he sings white demon love songs in her dreams"
Not really sure about the "wheres your selfish kiss" line. Maybe he broke up with her and kissed her before he did it as a sort of goodbye kiss and he thought it was selfish to do that when he was just going to leave her. But then I think he's saying that even though they love each other they can't be together because of them constantly being apart. That's what I think the line "lets not forget about the fear" is about. He's saying they both want to be together, but he doesn't want to get back together because he remembers the fear of worrying if she's cheating on him or something like that while they're together. So basically, that part won't change. "Black invitation to a place that cannot change."
Then I think he realizes he's being stupid and it can work even if they'll be apart a lot. "Widen your hearts scope." As for the "Who let your friend go" I think maybe when they broke up their friends kind of took sides well not necessarily took sides, but stopped being friends with either her or him so he's saying he didn't mean for that to happen, so he's saying "who let yor friend go" as in, was that my fault? So since he realizes he doesn't want to be apart anymore despite them having to be away from each other, he is asking for her to get back with him. "Let us be in love, let's do old and gray I won't make you cry, I will never stray. I will do my part. Let us be in love tonight." So that is obviously him asking her to get back with him because he's telling her he'll never leave her and he'll always love her and do anything for her. And then the line "I can't stand it anymore, darling." Is just him saying he can't stand being away from her any longer so that's just another way of him trying to get her back.
I could be wrong, but I think it's more important what the song means to you individually rather than what the person who wrote the lyrics actually wrote it about. =) |

I think it's about a guy that was afraid that his girlfriend was cheating on him, and so his jealously ending up breaking them up. He's saying he still loves her and misses her "i have decided it's best that you know i'm still thinking about" and she misses him too "be comfored by we share the same skies"
But I think he realizes he's better off without her because he doesn't want to have to feel that jealously and worry again which is why he says "I could not be as nervous as I was" so basically with that line I think he's saying he doesn't like being alone and the thought of being alone scares him but its still better than worrying about if his girlfriend is cheating on him. |

It's about a girl that goes out partying and doing drugs and drinking and never thinks about the consequences. She thinks because she's young and pretty nothing can happen to her, and then the drugs kill her. Or at least I'm guessing it was the drugs, if it wasn't that it was something else. Hence the line "One of us never made it home that night" and also "Jenny died" |

I agree. It's about him being with someone just because he's lonely and she he wants to love her, but he doesn't think he should be. Maybe because he doesn't want to get hurt? The line "this time no" makes me think that he was hurt before and doesn't want to have to go through it again, so he says to himself "this time no" because he won't allow himself to love her for fear of being hurt. |

I agree with all the comments, he can't stay in a relationship and doesn't want anything serious. But the end line "the hardest love has the coldest end" makes me think that maybe he never gets into anything serious because he's afraid of being hurt because he knows that when you really love someone and it ends it's really hard. |

Heard this song on the radio in London and immediately liked it. It's so catchy and I can't stop listening to it! I definitely think it's about a guy who was in a relationship and started getting jealous "wasted on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head" in his head he was imagining his girlfriend was cheating on him so he ended the relationship but then realized she didn't cheat on him, so he screwed up the relationship and he's just realizing how stupid he is for doing that and how he regrets it.

I agree, brilliant song. And I also agree with the meaning. It's about feeling like you're a no one because you didn't get where you thought you would in life, but then you meet someone that loves you despite that and realize that it doesn't matter what job you have or how much money you have. So basically there is so much more to life rather than your job and money or "things they teach you at school". |

I can't believe there are so few comments on here. This song makes me so sad. It really makes me want to be a kid again. Just as someone said, I'd give anything just to be a kid and believe again. It's so sad that when you're a kid you're just itching to grow up and when you do, you're not happy about it. I just turned 18 an I was dreading my birthday because it meant I would no longer be a kid. |

I think, like many people on here that this song is just a message of hope. Despite all the starvation, poverty, genocide, and the general devastation of the world and the bad things that are happening in it, the world is a wonderful place full of beauty and we all need to take time to realize that and appreciate it.
I think there is NO cover that can ever live up to Louis, this song is simply brilliant.
And I love all the comments about people sharing the memories they have with the song, it makes me feel happy and hopeful. |

I can't believe the song is on the New Moon soundtrack. It really disgusts me. The Killers are WAY better than that. I think they're SUCH an amazing band that they deserve everyone to know about them and love their music, but I just really feel like this is the wrong way to get more popular.
Anyway, I don't think the song really is fitting for the movie anyway. (I've read the book.)
And just to let everyone know, this song was not written for the soundtrack. They didn't want to put it on Day & Age. Just wanna make that clear...
