I hear this song as being about their moving to the next level, having doubts, undergoing (more) self-examination, and anticipating what others will say while, at the same time, thinking about the importance of the words we all use. This verse is likely my favorite Avett Brothers lyric: And everyone around me shakes their head in disbelief And says I'm too caught up They say young is good and old is fine And truth is cool but all that matters Is that you have your good times But their good times come with prices And I can't believe it when I hear the jokes they make At anyone's expese except their own Would they laugh if they knew who paid? |

Some of you guys need to get out more--or maybe stay in and watch a few old werewolf movies. You know, the ones with the genteel British guy, perfectly dressed and groomed who, in spite of Claude Raines' warning, turns into a howling monster, mutilating and devouring by the light of the full moon. As to the guy who thought this was ripped off from Sweet Home Alabama, can I use the word 'idiot' on this board? If you were serious, here's the sequence. 1. Lynard Skynard has hit with Sweet Home Alabama 2. Warren Zevon has a hit with this completely unrelated song 3. Kid Rock, possibly the biggest doofus in the history of music, records a song about listening to the Skynard song and inexplicably uses the music from the Warren Zevon song. Got it? Good, because I don't want to have to come after you. ;) |

In an interview in the new Relevant Magazine, Jeff Tweedy says that the song is told fromt he point of view of a Civil War soldier who was paid to fight as a substitute for a wealthy man (a common practice.) He's now about to die and is writing to the man who paid him to fight. Tweedy also said this song was written without judgment either on the speaker or the man who paid him. Also, this song originally had an unmanagable number of verses (14? I don't remember.) |
