Young Galaxy – Pretty Boy Lyrics 10 years ago
Though I'm assuming it wasn't written with them in mind, it's definitely about a young, misfit couple moving to the city with only each other, and ignoring those who disapprove of their lifestyle.

I read this amazing story the other day. Then this song came on and I was a little alarmed at how relevant it seemed. It would now be hard to convince me that this song is NOT about their experience!

Keaton Henson – You Lyrics 11 years ago
If you must wait,
Wait for them here in my arms as I shake
If you must weep,
Do it right here in my arms as I sleep
If you must mourn my love,
Mourn with the moon and the stars up above

If you must mourn,
Don't do it alone

If you must leave,
Leave as though fire burns under your feet
If you must speak,
Speak every word as though it were unique
If you must die sweetheart,
Die knowing your life was my life's best part

If you must die,
Remember your life

You are, you are

If you must fight,
Fight with yourself and your thoughts in the night
If you must work,
Work to leave some part of you on this earth
If you must live darling one,
Just live

This is so familiar to me. Falling in love with someone from afar on public transportation, imagining what they're like inside, wishing you had the guts to say something to them, then leaving and forgetting about them completely, until the process repeats itself with someone else. Amazing song.

Keaton Henson – Lying to You Lyrics 11 years ago
I actually cried the first time I heard this song. He goes the entire song saying how he doesn't really love this woman he is with and how he never can or will. Then, in the last line, he reveals why that is:

"It may seem strange that still I stay with you, if it's true you're not really the one. And why don't I just keep on looking for her? Because I found her and now she is gone."

He had "the one." But now she is gone, whether she died or just left him. And now he knows he can never truly love anyone else like he loved this woman, so he'll be lonely for the rest of his life.

Bastille – Pompeii Lyrics 11 years ago
There's obviously a volcanic eruption going on if you look at it literally, but I think the song is a little deeper than that. I agree somewhat with JWStreeter.

To me, I see someone who has been stuck in a continuous cycle, getting nowhere. As a twenty-something recent college graduate, I definitely relate. The first lines seem to really sum it up for me: "I was left to my own devices.
Many days fell away with nothing to show." I imagine him working away at some dead end job with years going by. And then he stops and looks back at his life and sees that nothing has changed. Nothing is really happening and he starts to wonder when it will really begin. Even though he's always been an optimist, he's having a hard time being positive about his situation.

Tegan and Sara – Living Room Lyrics 11 years ago
I don't think this has to do with a personal, sexual relationship like a lot of people here have said. To me, it seems like she got a little too interested in her neighbors' lives from afar. Kind of like when you watch a TV show and you get too invested in the characters affairs. She gets so interested in watching their lives from across the way that she thinks about them all night.

Passion Pit – Where We Belong Lyrics 11 years ago
The licensed lyrics are incorrect:

It’s gotten cold in here, but a solemn warmth draws near
And with a gentle touch, all these burdens and such fears are wiped clear

Who says you ought to stay? How’s this the easier way?
It’s far from giving up, cowards never say “enough is enough”

And then I’m lifted up, out of the crimson tub
The bath begins to drain and from the floor he prays away all my pain

Who says that God exists? We can’t see icons or myths, but
I believe in you, do you believe in me too, Gabriel?

All the things you can’t control should never destroy the love one holds
I found a place, I found a place, I found a place where we belong

Never did I think that I'd be lifted to the whitest clouds
Never did I ever think I'd find all of the things I’ve found
It's hard to keep on living when your heart weighs but a million pounds
All I’ve ever wanted was to be happy and make you proud

Passion Pit – Love Is Greed Lyrics 11 years ago
You want a love, a love for us
You want a selfless love that we can always say we trust
Love has always been a mockery of those in love and scared to be in the mean
Don’t wanna love, don’t wanna hurt
If all that loneliness requires just another’s comfort
Better off being all on your own, there’s a beauty in being alone

Today we’re arguing it’s not worth making
Another person that’s just yours for the taking
All your hoping and praying won’t do more than saying that

Love is just greed
It’s almost taken me, but now I can see
Love is just greed
A selfish little me to follow all you lead
If we really love ourselves, how do you love somebody else?

A love to us, a love to them
It’s just the history repeating itself time and time again
Love is not a veil to hide your voice, all this talk of love just turns to noise
So you want love, a love so tough
That even all these truths don’t seem as though they’re adding up
Haven’t you already had enough? What’s this suffering remind you of?

Someday we’ll all agree it’s not worth making
Another person that’s just yours for the taking
All your hoping and praying won’t do more than saying that

Love is just greed
It’s almost taken me, but now I can see
Love is just greed
A selfish little me to follow all you lead
If we really love ourselves, how do you love somebody else?

A love all gone is just another story
What’s gone sour once was glory
And this romance you want, ask for it then
Honey, could you put your arms around me so?
Tell me things about you that I wouldn’t know
And tell me that you love me like you do
And maybe I will too

Love is just greed
It’s almost taken me, but now I can see
Love is just greed
A selfish little me to follow all you lead
If we really love ourselves, how do you love somebody else?

Passion Pit – Cry Like a Ghost Lyrics 11 years ago
The licensed lyrics that replaced mine are horrible (the second verse especially..) so:

All on my own, where I found you alone
You were caught up in somebody else's mess
And yes, I drank all those drinks on my own
My life’s become some blurry little quest

And the clock kept ticking slowly, and you leaned over to ask me
If I even had a clue where I was
Well I lied down your wood floors, and my brain and body took course
In the night and then, as though it never was

It all began to feel the same
I want to know where they keep the rain

Sylvia, right back where you came from
You’re a pendulum, heartbroken and numb but
Sylvia, no one’s gonna tell you when enough’s enough
Enough is enough

Sick to the bone on the steps to my home
The moon shined through the drapery of leaves
To her, to ignore everyone on my own
My true love, just to feel some made up breeze

But as my body crumbled, you walked as I just stumbled
And we spoke only of things made in my head
You never once controlled me what all the others told me,
That if I kept on going, I’d be dead

It’s not just you who felt the pain
Now tell me where they keep the rain

Sylvia, right back where you came from
You’re a pendulum, heartbroken and numb but
Sylvia, no one’s gonna tell you when enough’s enough
Enough’s always too tough

See what I’ve done now, I don’t understand
She says I screamed and that I raised my hand but
I never meant to, wasn’t even there
I never meant to, I would never dare

Sylvia, right back where you came from
You’re a pendulum, heartbroken and numb but
Sylvia, no one’s gonna tell you when enough’s enough
Enough’s always too tough

Sylvia, right back where you came from
You’re a pendulum, heartbroken and numb but
Sylvia, no one’s gonna tell you when enough’s enough
Enough is enough

Snow Patrol – Open Your Eyes Lyrics 11 years ago
This song really means a lot to me. Not necessarily the meaning with which it was originally written, but the meaning that I've sort of given it based on my own life.

To me, "this dark room" is the proverbial "closet." It's being told from the perspective of a gay person who is "out" of the closet, to someone who is still "in." The speaker wants to show this person that it's okay. Open your eyes, come out here into the open and be your true self.

"The anger swells in my guys, I won't feel these slices and cuts." People can be mean and rude, but he isn't going to let it get to him. "I want so much to open your eyes, I need you to look into mine." He needs this person. He wants to open his eyes to true happiness, to show them that it's okay to be who they really are.

"They don't get your soul or your fire." The people who are hating just don't get what makes you really great. So, "take my hand, and we'll walk from this dark room for the last time." He asks the closeted person to be brave, to take his hand, and walk out of there for the final time. Because if he does, "we can do what we like, anywhere." He wants to open his eyes to a new world, because he loves him. "I won't waste a minute without you."

I know this probably isn't how it was originally intended, but that's the beauty of music, really. Hopefully somebody else out there can relate to my interpretation as well. :)

Bon Iver – Blindsided Lyrics 11 years ago
I've always believed this was about him discovering someone cheating on him.

He's been blindsided by his lover cheating on him. He bikes down to downtown, to "the lockdown," to a poor area, maybe. He crouches beneath the window sill of the house of her or her supposed lover. For all the agony it will cause him to see this, he would rather know. So he peeks in. He's not really like this, it's not really like him to do something like this. "I'm probably plight-less." He's trying to convince himself that he's overreacting, she's probably not cheating, he might have just made up all the signs. He cups the window, he wants to know, would you really rush out like that? would you really cheat on me? Then he finds out.

She is cheating on him with someone else. He walks down to the shoreline to work it out. "The end of a blood line." He was thinking of having a family with her, but all those thoughts are gone now.

I love the little detail of the first few times being "I am blindsided," and then the last ones instead saying "I was blindsided." He was blindsided, but now he knows.

Bon Iver – Skinny Love Lyrics 11 years ago
A lot has been said about this song, but it's one of my favorites ever, so I figured I'd put down my thoughts.

His heart has been broken, smashed into a million pieces. But Skinny Love isn't about the one who broke his heart. He's trying to find something in new relationships now, but is unable to. He's pretty much at rock bottom. He pleads with his new girl, "skinny love" to just last the year. He needs someone, he hasn't had a meaningful relationship since his heart was broken. But he knows it's his fault. "Cut out all the ropes and let me fall:" forget it, it's not going to happen, and it wouldn't be easy, "this order's tall." It's a tall order to try to deal with him right now in this state.

In the first chorus, I think this "skinny love" is speaking to him. She tells him to be patient and kind and maybe this will work. But she knows it won't, and in the morning, she'll be a different "kind." Not a genuine kindness like before, but a false, pity sort of kindness. She's leaving. She holds the "tickets," a list of all of his faults and mistakes, and he is left to work through them alone, to "pay the fines."

He is speaking again and asks her "What happened here?". Now he's really at the bottom. He has his heart broken again, this time essentially by himself, and is as full of sadness as he could be. "Sullen load is full."

Then I think in the next chorus he is speaking to himself. "I told you to be patient...fine...balanced...kind." You need to be those things for a relationship to work. Then in his despair, he addresses the original heartbreaker. "Who the hell was I?" Maybe he was cheated on. He's broken, and it's all her fault. He realizes how broken he really is, and why "skinny love" didn't last.

I imagine him looking in the mirror and asking himself: "Who will love you? Who will fight? Who will fall far behind?" If someone is going to really love his broken soul, they're going to have to fight for it. They're going to have to fall behind in life to go pick him up out of the hole he has fell/dug into. Is there anyone out there who will fight that hard for him?

This song comes and goes so fast.

Seems like he's singing to someone he used to be close to (or at least wanted to be). Someone who's changed. "There used to be a movement in the way your dress would wave." I'd imagine she's sort of settled down.

But he's not quite over her. "If you wanna, you can find me..." But in the end, he ends up singing only to the radio. He asks the radio if there's still some magic left. Magic that she seems to have lost.

The Gaslight Anthem – Handwritten Lyrics 11 years ago
I'd say it's about... music. And how much music can mean.

In the first verse, I think he's addressing the listener. What's your favorite song? He know's there's someone waiting for his songs, holding their breath and waiting for the songs that can heal them, really speak to them. And he's holding his breath too. Maybe waiting for the song that can really heal him to come out from within himself.

Then in the chorus, he talks about actually writing these songs. Every word handwritten. He writes for a lot of reasons: to ease the loss of youth, to ease how long he has missed someone, to plead forgiveness. But whatever he's writing about, it's handwritten. From heart to limb to pen. Nothing else in between.

"There's nothing like another soul that's been cut up the same." When you really connect with a song, there's nothing like the writer knowing exactly the words to describe what you are feeling. They've been there too. There's a connection ("take a hold of my hand"). He asks the listener /someone else if they want to drive without a word in between, with just the music playing. The music (maybe his) that has the power to sew up the seams.

I think the end just stresses again the connection that music can give us. With this pen, with this song, "I thee wed." To wed someone is to have a deep connection with them. I think us listening to his songs represents that bond. From his heart, to his limb, to his pen, to our ears, to our hearts. When you listen to these songs, it doesn't feel too far.

Nice. I really like what you said about the "lines" being the distinctions we make. Also, "the bitter mechanics of life" goes along with the second comment you made, where the death is all just one part, one side of life. This song just keeps getting better and better to me!

A little addition:

I know he's said that this song is about being an atheist or whatever, so you could also look at "the lines are all imagined" as being the lines in the bible, literally the words said by god and others were all imagined.

“I read an article–I forget where, exactly–but it was just basically about how in the United States we used to manufacture a lot of stuff, like a lot of the microphones that I buy on eBay because they’re good, high-quality microphones, but they’re old. Nobody makes them anymore because we don’t make anything, basically. So it was about that issue, and it was about the argument that they were making. It was that big-money interests that lobbied to have free trade with Asia. So we were able to buy goods made in countries that had no respect for civil rights, and the relationships with the unions [in this country] could finally be skirted around and we could end that. So now we’re in the situation today where you cannot make a living, basically. We used to make every fucking thing we used, and we lost all that. Fucked the country, saved their asses, fucked the whole economy.”

The Shins – Port of Morrow Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is UNREAL.

I love the first verse, when he sees the pigeon about to be killed and he fears for it, but he knows what's going to happen; those are just the mechanics of life.

I love how at first he wants to hide the fact that "the lines are all imagined" from his little girl, but then at the end, wants to impress it upon her. There is so much that is just imagined in our world today that we take for granted to be real. To realize that it doesn't exist, that it doesn't matter, is incredibly important (or is it?).

"Ace of spades, port of morrow, life is death is life"...

Then he makes a statement of human history: "Must've been a world of evil clowns who let it happen... But now I recognize, dear listeners, that you were there and so was I." The first time I heard this song, and I heard him sing "dear listeners," it felt so surreal.

The last line, that there is "a skull under your curls" is incredibly powerful to end the song. No matter how full of life a young girl might seem, she's just a skeleton on the inside. Just like everyone else who is alive, and everyone who is dead.

When it all comes together, it seems like an incredibly complex and simultaneously simple statement on life. Whatever it is, this song feels incredibly important to me.

For some reason, this song reminds me of The Virgin Suicides. I see a boy watching a mysterious girl from afar, but still knowing a lot about her life, knowing her troubles.

She doesn't have a great life, her dad lives at the bar, and she seems to be spiraling downwards ["my mother says your dirty, they're gonna find you dead," "you blow just like a broken kite, you're giving up the fight"]. But he wants her, and he wants her to overcome everything she is facing.

I think this is about the innocent early stages of a relationship.

Especially the line: "It's not that the darkness can't touch our lives, I know it will in time, but she's no ordinary valentine." They are still at the point where everything has been perfect, they haven't had any conflict between them. He knows that those little things are inevitable, but for now, she is perfect as is their relationship.

I'd say it's about a plain, ordinary guy who ends up with a wild, bad-girl.

He has his life in a quiet order, but suddenly finds her in the middle of it, unsure of how she got there. He's not sure how he feels about this relationship [his gut (head) and his heart are out of phase]. The "bait and switch" line shows that she might have seemed like a nice girl at first, but then revealed her true self. The "I'll tell her I'll leave if she don't settle down" and "I'm just a simple man, cursed with an honest heart" lines show that he is a shy kind of guy and she has a power over him. Whether he wants it or not, he's stuck in this relationship.

A few differences I hear:

"Peace and quiet by means of subtraction"
"My gut and my heart are so out of phase"
"I'm just not used to these powerful waves"
"With a moral compass, bait and switch"
and maybe "Why'd she go and tear it all apart?"

The Damnwells – Werewolves Lyrics 12 years ago
I have no idea if this is on the right track or not, but here's what I think:

I see him talking to a girl who's been sort of trapped in her overbearing parents' world. In the first verse, he talks to the parents, telling him how he likes/loves their daughter and he's not going to stop. They've been through this before though. In the second verse, he asks her to come with him and get away from the "hate and hurt and misery." In the chorus, he is speaking again to the parents and tells them to "let her hear the werewolves if she wants to." Let her go out in the world if that's what she wants.

Literally, the verses are about a fighter and his lover. In the first verse, he is preparing for a fight but his girl is worried. He reassures her even though he's not sure about what's going to happen. In the second, he is in the midst of the fight thinking about their love, when he is hit hard. Then in the third, she is holding him as they both know that he is about to die.

The chorus is amazing. That's all I really have to say about that.

Then there's the bridge. You can pretty much count on every Fray song having one of these types of lines. One that if you didn't know better you might think is an ancient proverb or something. "What breaks your bones is not the load you're carrying. What breaks you down is all in how you carry." Regardless of what you're going through, as long as have the right attitude, you can get through it.

Florence + the Machine – Landscape Lyrics 12 years ago
I love this song so much! I'd say it's about a girl who, despite the upbeat feel to the song, is sort of lost, definitely divided within herself, and possibly depressed. And all of that either runs in her family, or is causing a division within her family (or both). I love the part about the lighthouse. A lighthouse is a sort of beacon of hope, and when she goes to look for that hope, she finds that it was washed out to sea. The singer then sings directly to the girl, "I wanna give you back the open sky." The singer wants to help the girl. And then the girl is either attempting or thinking about suicide. Kind of a sad song, but I really love this one!

A few lines I think are different:
"Acres of longing, mountains of tenderness"
"It's cutting down the family tree"
"Growing in the landscape"
"She saw that the lighthouse had been washed out to sea"
"You put the gun into your mouth to bite
You pull it and spit out"
