Ray LaMontagne – Hold You In My Arms Lyrics | 5 years ago |
I read somewhere that it's about a love affair, and he's the other man. The first verse is about how he's emotionally there for her, "but who really profits from the dying" means that him being there for her while she stays with her spouse doesn't fix the situation for anyone. In the second verse, he's wondering what this affair means for them which has turned physical, and though her kisses help him stop fretting, through it all he would hold her forever and be with her if she would be with him forever instead. The last verse is about the danger of what they're doing, and the reality that she could be happy with just him, and he would happy to hold her forever. |
Ray LaMontagne – Sarah Lyrics | 5 years ago |
I think he's thinking about when he told Sarah on the train his secret which is that he cheated on her. He's also explaining how it was when they were young before he became a jerk. The reason I think he cheated on her was how he became "coarse, cold, & reckless." All ways to describe someone who has not cared about your heart and cheated on the person they're supposed to love and whose heart they're supposed to take care of. Now he can't call her. He broke the relationship. He was "scared" and "young" and so he cheats in order to feel less freaked out about their relationship & make it less important to him. So now he's wondering if it's ever going to be the same. |

Meg & Dia – Monster Lyrics | 5 years ago |
It should be written like this: His little whispers, "Love me. Love me. That's all I ask for. Love me. Love me." He battered his tiny fists to feel something. His whispers (desires) and then the assault (battered his tiny fists) he perpetrates against Hannah are motivated by his broken inner-child (which is why his whispers are little and his fists are tiny.) It's an interesting look at personality disorders and mental illness and their roots and how the abused become abusers. |
Damien Rice – Volcano Lyrics | 6 years ago |
@[sem3000:25273] For example: she gives him mountains which are obstacles to get to her. He gives her the sea, which love when compared to the sea is vast and endless. |
Damien Rice – Volcano Lyrics | 6 years ago |
I think the phrasing is tricky. I can see how the stanzas are written why they think that he is the volcano, but from listening to this, I would have written down the phrasing differently. I think she is the volcano, and he is trying to protect himself by trying to be detached because she's a volcano and young and tumultuous and too immature to love him the way he loves her. |
New Radicals – Someday We'll Know Lyrics | 7 years ago |
This song is heart wrenching. One of the parts that stands out to me is this part: "One day I'll go dancing on the moon / someday you'll know that I was the one for you" because it's basically saying you'll realize that we belong together when pigs fly - AKA "when I get to dance on the moon" -> when the impossible happens, then you'll believe "that I was the one for you." It shows that he's lost hope that she'll want to be with him, even though he can't understand why. |
New Radicals – Technicolor Lover Lyrics | 7 years ago |
It reminds me of "The Zero Theorem" film. |

Amy Winehouse – Back To Black Lyrics | 9 years ago |
@[sem3000:3006] oh and this is crazy. I just read that if you use a penny in tar heroine, it helps make it so you can snort it. So she loves puff, but he loves blow. So he like to snort the heroine, and she likes to smoke it, but she's trying to be the penny, because she wants to be what he wants: the blow. Damn. |
Amy Winehouse – Back To Black Lyrics | 9 years ago |
I found this website that has drug slang translation. I think she used a lot of play on words: Black to Black play on words for 1) "back to back" - Smoking crack after injecting heroin or heroin used after smoking crack 2) "black" - Marijuana; opium; methamphetamine And the line: My Odds are Stacked - "stacking" combining drugs So she injected heroine and consecutively smoked marijuana - which makes sense about about loving "puff" later. I think that loving "blow" is pretty obvious for cocaine. And I'm a "tiny penny" : a penny balloon that contains narcotics I think this all gives a deeper insight into the darkness of her drug usage to numb the pain. The straightforward interpretation is correct, and then this background information shows insidious her love and drug life were. |
Charlotte Sometimes – Sweet Valium High Lyrics | 10 years ago |
When does she she "want"? All I hear is "Don't you drug me up." |
Brand New – The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot Lyrics | 10 years ago |
"It's cold as a tomb, and it's dark in your room, when I sneak to your bed to pour salt in your wounds." I have the impression that they had sex again after being broken up.. especially bc of the next lines: "So call it quits or get a grip. Say you wanted a solution. You just wanted to be missed" means they are not together anymore, she is looney & they hooked up, but that's not really going to solve anything. She wants his attention, but she can only have so much. He's telling her either get over me and have casual sex - get a grip at what this really is now, or call it quits.. |
Jim Reeves – I'm Crying Again Lyrics | 10 years ago |
"Yes I miss you my darling, and I dream of your eyes so blue Yes I think of you my darling, and my heart is a cloak of mourning " I gaze at the stars with a prayer in my heart I ask for bitter strength just to hate and depart "Yes come back to me my darling I miss my darling tonight" [guitar] "Since you left me, my world is torn, The sun stopped shining, and the moon turns" So please come back to me my darling Can't you see that I'm crying again |

Nine Inch Nails – Only Lyrics | 10 years ago |
This is not the pretentiously written fluff piece I was expecting to read, but instead a concise and intellectual presentation of the intrinsically metaphysical elements of this song. I admire and envy your command of language. |

R.E.M. – Try Not To Breathe Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I don't know. I think this is about being desperately depressed and anxious from a traumatic life event, but you aren't physically alone, just emotionally. Like there is someone sitting next to you who is completely unsympathetic and intolerant to your feelings. So you tried to tell the other person about it, and they shut you down. So holding in the anguish causes stress on your body until you literally start shaking and shivering. The isolated feeling adds so much insult to injury that you want to cry or cry out for some compassion, but since you can't do that without cruelty from the other person, you hold your breath so you don't speak or audibly cry. The more you hold your breath the more you wish you never had to breathe again. |
The Postal Service – The District Sleeps Alone Tonight Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Taking a stab at it - he's a part of her past. She's a snob now, and he feels alienated and recognizes her rejection. She is only letting him in as a visitor, as though her circle associating her with him would damager her persona. I think he is referring to her new persona when he says "A stranger with your door key Explaining that I am just visiting" like it is technically her holding the key, but she is a stranger now. |
Kings of Leon – Use Somebody Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I think his groupies are kind of being compared to prostitutes, but he desires this other woman because he respects her. So he stops partying with the groupies, and goes home at night to write music that will make her respect and desire him too. "Off in the night, while you live it up, I'm off to sleep Waging wars to shape the poet and the beat -> songwriting I hope it's gonna make you notice someone like me." |
Lana Del Rey – Get Drunk Lyrics | 10 years ago |
She's spinning out of control being completely reckless, and she just wants to be around people who will party with her. |
R.E.M. – Nightswimming Lyrics | 11 years ago |
You know that Dashboard Confessional's lead singer is a huge fan of REM, and the band has performed (with REM's lead singer Michael Stype's) this song before. I've always wondered if that line about the "dashboard" in this song with it's feel like it's a "confessional" is what inspired the band's name. |

Everclear – I Will Buy You A New Life Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Dang this ISN'T supposed to be ironic. Ugh don't know how that typo happened. |
Everclear – I Will Buy You A New Life Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I think this is supposed be ironic. He's seriously wanting money for the woman he loves because she's afraid of being poor so she's tried to make it work with good looking guys (things come easier for the handsome), and rich guys with issues - (it's hard to know which was first or if she was with one and cheated with the other) "Yes, I know all about that other guy The handsome man with athletic thighs I know about all the time before With that obsessive little rich boy They might make you think you're happy Yeah maybe for a minute or two They can't make you laugh No they can't make you feel the way that I do" He thinks he she gives him a chance even once she'll want to be leave her guy for him: "Will you please let me stay the night No one will ever know" Because like he said - "They can't make you laugh No they can't make you feel the way that I do" |
The Beatles – You've Really Got a Hold on Me (Smokey Robinson cover) Lyrics | 11 years ago |
This song is about being a codependent to someone who is unstable or wrong for you in some way. There's lots of songs about being codependent -" Britney Spears "Toxic" (btw Naim Yael does a killer cover), Rod Stewart (originally by Tim Hardin) "Reason to Believe," Sia "The Co-dependent, Jazmine Sullivan "Holding You Down," Bad Company "I Can't Live Without You," Dido "White Flag," Dean Martin "You're Nobody 'Till Somebody Loves You," Dolly Parton "Jolene," Everclear "You Make Me Feel Like a Whore," Ella Fitzgerald (edgy cover by Tricky) "Black Coffee," Soft Cell "Tainted Love," U2 "With or Without You," Melissa Etheridge "I'm the Only One," Ducan Sheik "Barely Breathing," Lauren Hill "The Ex-factor," Sade "Mr. Wrong," John Mayer "Heartbreak Warfare," and even the song "Your Are My Sunshine." |
Tonic – If You Could Only See Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I think this song could be put on here differently so that it's flows like a conversation/explanations and then his thoughts. *To the friends and family who want him to leave a toxic relationship: "If you could only see the way she loves me Then maybe you would understand Why I feel this way about our love And what I must do If you could only see how blue her eyes can be when she says When she says she loves me" (Codependency) *Tumultuous thoughts about this girl he was sticking up for: Well you got your reasons And you got your lies And you got your manipulations They cut me down to size Sayin' you love but you don't You give your love but you won't *Excuses to friends a family: "If you could only see the way she loves me Then maybe you would understand Why I feel this way about our love And what I must do If you could only see how blue her eyes can be when she says When she says she loves me" *Tumultuous Thoughts: Seems the road less traveled Show's happiness unraveled And you got to take a little dirt To keep what you love That's what you gotta do... Sayin' you love but you don't You give your love but you won't You're stretching out your arms to something that's just not there. Sayin' you love where you stand Give your heart when you can *Excuses for staying with her: "If you could only see the way she loves me Then maybe you would understand Why I feel this way about our love And what I must do If you could only see how blue her eyes can be when she says When she says she loves me" *Tumultuous Thoughts - Sayin' you love but you don't You give your love but you won't Sayin' you love where you stand Give your heart when you can *Excuses - "If you could only see the way she loves me Then maybe you would understand Why I feel this way about or love And what I must do If you could only see how blue her eyes can be when she says When she says she loves me" |

"So different now FROM what it seemed" means "My life now is so different than how I expected it turn out." She thought the love her life was going to marry her, but he used and left her pregnant and alone, so instead of being happily married she ends up unmarried, alone, and separated from her daughter whose under the care of strangers that she pays child support to so people won't know she has a baby without a husband because she wouldn't be hired back then. |

Coldplay – The Scientist Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I think the song's about a scientist trying to come to terms with science and spirituality. He's kind of come to a point in the road where he realizes he "needs" God, and so he chooses to set God "apart" from science, and just accept God as something that can't be explained through science. The "running in circles, chasing tails, coming back as we are" could lend itself to scientist trying to come up with how the universe was formed, like trying to find a reason for the big bang, or is it the chicken or the egg that came first, and finally coming back to the conclusion that there isn't a conclusion and that he is still just a human without all the answers. I think the second part is about how he could choose to reject god (tails) or believe in god (heads) and then it's a play on words "heads on a silence apart" that he feels the void without spirituality. |

The Temper Trap – Trembling Hands Lyrics | 11 years ago |
This song means so much to me. I have injured my voice, my instrument, and have been trying in vain to sing again for over a year. I go back to the doctors and voice teachers, but I always feel like they can't fix me or really work with me, and I'm on my own. I wish someone would be there for me. |

I just reread the lyrics based on your opinion, and I think you're right for the first half. However, it seems that he ends up falling for her because he starts to add "even when you're not new," and the compliments become more sacred: "you're priceless" and "you're holy." |
Ray LaMontagne – Sarah Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I think the lyrics are based on a live performance recording: When we first met we were kids, we were wild, we were restless And after a while, I grew coarse, I grew cold, I grew reckless I hold this memory, hold you so close to me, whispered, "Will we always last?" Lately it feels like I'm asleep and I just can't wake up Pacing the floor, want to call, but I can't so I hang up Sharing a seat on the train with a lady who's crying has ruined her make up Now I see just how young, how scared I was Eyes closed tight, throwing punch after punch at the world Sarah, is it ever gonna be the same? Sarah, is it ever gonna be the same? Said goodbye to all the places that I used to go Said goodbye to all the faces that I used to know Nothing lasts forever... I guess by now, I should know... I should know. There ain't a thing I can say that will ever repair You had so much advice, and yet couldn't share. Maybe someday, we will look back on this and we'll smile, but right now I can't bear it. Now I see just how young, how scared I was, Eyes closed tight, throwing punch after punch at the world. Sarah, is it ever gonna be the same? Sarah, is it ever gonna be the same? |

I don't care how lame or nerdy this sounds. If you've read Anne Rice's novel "Interview with a Vampire" then you'd be amazed about how much this sounds like the transformation from human to vampire that is described by Lestat. |
