At the Drive-In – Arcarsenal Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm not truly sure if this song even has a continuous theme, but I'll say something about the Dahmer theory and how it could be credible:

must have read a thousand faces
must have robbed them of their cause (Throughout life Dahmer has met and seen many people, and due to his sick nature he twisted the general view of each one and "robbed" them of their purpose; or perhaps he saw faces (which he ate occasionally) and immediatelly saw them as a grotesque thing, instead of a thing of individual beauty)
sickened thirst, sickened thirst
keeps it together
soft white glow in the cranium
a bulls eye made sedated (what ever his deep seeded issue is with himself keeps his Nuerons firing in a local area that feeds his dark drive to destroy and mutilate, the narrow mindness numbing him (sedated). Bulls eye i think is a metaphor to the nuerons firing (soft white glow) that he struck and drove him to insanity)

beware

must have read a thousand faces
and all these voices won't give up (psychosis of his mind telling him (whether literally or figuratively) to hate)
sickened thirst, sickened thirst
glues it together
a catatonic leisure
at 1000 miles per hour (again deep seeded issue psychologically and physiologically local in his mind like an addiction. Catatonic leisure is a play on words alluding to "catatonic leision" which is where a "bruise" on the mind leads to psychological disorder. This "bruise" for him was figurative and he enjoyed it. The thoughts (or nuerons) fed themselves at a thousand miles an hour, meaning he was constantly feeling crazy.)

beware

so who's in charge here
barking out loud so clear
because i'd really like to meet him (ATDI asks what superego (or mental justification is present that drove him to insantiy)

uproar east, strike west (2 things; 1. could be talking about how he killed mostly african americans and asians; they "uproared" and bothered him and they're from the east and he struck them down in the west; 2. a play on the 2 hemispheres of the brain. east is right and west is left.)

have you ever tasted skin
sink your, sink your teeth in (ATDI asking the listeners if they could relate, if they are crazy)

overall, alot of ATDI's songs have psychological references so it's not hard to see that they might approach this one in that way. to me, they seem to focus on his sickness and how it drives him. Again, I'm not sure if any of this is right. It's just my two cents and I don't know enough about the band to make a full analysis. Brilliant song BTW.

Pink Floyd – Green Is the Colour Lyrics 13 years ago
The song is about an Island, more directly, Ibiza. Rogers said he wrote this song when they were in Ibiza recording for la valle. The song makes much more sense when it's about an island. However, it could have a double meaning and be about a girl. though i highly doubt it because water's rarely ever wrote love songs towards girls. I could go deeper but here's a quick explanation. Blue canopy = sky. He's gotta shade his eyes just to see the island. the dress is the bright white sand. Shadow of a wave is the surrounding crashing waters. Hazy visions are the mirage spectical you acheive staring across sand. The sun in her eyes is just the reflection of the sun. Moonshine made her cry is the fact the the moon brings in the tide. Ibiza is a highly forested island in the urban area, so green is her colour. The last two lines are very typical of waters's writing style. Make a huge leap to metaphysical metaphor at the end, so he could say it had artistic meaning. Oh roger. What will we do with you... oh yea. we'll go to your wall tour coming up.

Pink Floyd – Eclipse Lyrics 14 years ago
Jesus why did i read all those comments. took way too long. anyways, to anylize eclipse! Eclipse, first of all follows brain damage, which in my opinion is lyrically the best song on the album. Not cuz of what they mean but by how they are used. I am a firm believer in the use of "auditory images" and that pink floyd knew about them all too well. Especially waters. Brain damage sets the stage for eclipse by emphasizing the slavery that is "auditory imaging" and showing you how the loon is in fact just you, though waters himself has taken hold of you at that moment. With that said, Eclipse to me is describing perception or rather how each one of our perceptions in this life is different from the next person's and that this is what sort of shapes us. Some people see it as a way of discovering yourself, others feel like your losing your nuetrality (which is power)... side note: syd barret used to lay in his room all day and not move with his "senses" closed and his mind open, claiming that in the darkness in his head he has complete freedom, but as soon as he percieves with his eyes, nose, ears, etc., his mind becomes enslaved by sensation and his freedom is no more. This is what i mean by nuetrility or i guess i should say instead Perceptual nuetrility. you actively ignoring the world around you gives you power, because you are nuetral to it( meaning not aknowledging it exists or doesn't exist). but when you let your sensations (touch, see, taste, feel, hear- notice how hear isn't in there?, love, hate, etc) grab your attention you are enslaved by them. they shape you through slow conditioning. this is what i think the song is talking about. the metaphor of "everything under the sun" is simple to me; the sun simply represents what your mind is "shedding light on" or giving its attention. the only way to get rid of the sun is through an eclipse by which you "shed no light" and give no attention to anything. making you nuetral... Now i know alot of you are like wtf? this dude is wack. but listen, waters in many interviews discusses this use of "perceptional nuetrility" in lyrics and the music to take away the power that music itself takes from your mind and gives it back. If you have no idea what im talking about, read some floyd interviews or some damn philosophy books, mainly ones on perception; it will blow your mind... Out!

i disagree with deanjuba. I think this song can definantly be analyzed and yours was a damn good one. Very intricate and well supported.

Pink Floyd – Seamus Lyrics 14 years ago
This is definantly my least favorite song on meddle. it seems out of place (though alot of you say it compliments it, i have to disagree). It sounds more like it belongs on ummagumma. Especially since it has been translated into a sexual metaphor (ummagumma is slang for sex). Its blues feel is definantly entrancing and the lyrics are easy. If anything i would say this is the last song they wrote to stretch their musical ability before starting what critics call their followup stage (in contrast to their experimantal stage).

Pink Floyd – Fearless Lyrics 14 years ago
ROFL at all of you! Except those few decent comments at the front. This song definantly has multiple themes and aims. The Syd Barret theory is highly possible, the Jebus one fits but its highly doubtful, especially knowing the band at that point in their career. In Floyd's early years up until dark side, their lyrics were highly ambiguous. waters had not yet found his passion lyrical directness seen in dark side through the final cut and he had not yet "taken over the band's songwriting." With all that said this song, like almost all of meddle and obscured by clouds is highly transcendental. Thats what i think people miss when they read floyd lyrics. Most look for a tangible or situational meaning. Why not metaphysical? The songs flow so much better when you look at them as thoughts not words or actions. Thats why they seem (especially on this album excluding seamus) to take you away into another realm. And what super awesome about this song is for the first time they were able to put more concrete ideas into words. Anyways, now to say some concrete shit of my own. the themes i see as obvious are self reliance, intimacy with rebelion, determination and drive of a dream (the first stanza for sure), idealistic monism (though thats more of a beatles thing i still see it in the last stanza), and a highly romanticized alienation - which definantly makes me think about waters views towards barret. I don't really think its about coming over obsticles specifically. I do think thats part of determination but i see the character described more as just a free spirit doing his thing than a man taking on a challenge. Anybody agree with any of this or have i done too much cid for the day?
