I listen to this song when I run. Starting slow with that dreamy beginning I feel the anticipation of a good run. Then Bonzo hits that drum shooting me out of a cannon. A team of horses run beside me in time to the galloping drum. Time changes carry me across ever changing terrain. I'm on a trip through lands I'll probably never see. When I get tired and want to give up, that cymbal crash in the middle is a hand on my back pushing me forward and faster. Back to the dreamy end just like the beginning...I feel like I could run forever. This song is not a song, it's an experience. Who gives a shit what it means...it's how it makes me feel. It helped me to keep running when I wanted to give up on the whole thing.

Jones wrote and arranged the music. Plant wrote the lyrics. As someone pointed out, Plant's fixation with Viking lore is evident (He even, symbolically, gave his son a Viking funeral). Also true, it's about plants dissolutionment with the excesses and liberties taken by the band and his anger at Page and Grant for basically abandoning him (and the band) in favor of pleasing themselves. Neither Page nor Grant attended Robert's son's funeral. They chose instead to stay in San Fran and enjoy the thousands of dollars of drugs they'd already paid for in advance. Page mixed the song, which probably accounts for the lyrics being so low in the mix. It's really the only song mixed that way on ITTOD. |

Some get it. The meaning is clear especially if you know the history of zep when this album was written.
It's about JImmy page and his addiction to heroin (lady IS slang for drugs because of how seductive they can be. Other references: don't let her get under your skin, crying in the darkness, don't ask anyone's help) Also in live performances, Plant often includes verses from Carolselaramba (spelling) which is definitely about how he felt abandoned by page when he really needed him( where did you run to where did you go, strong was your... strong was your bow.) |
