As the song's lyrics gives us an idea, it's all about remembering the past, probably the early childhood days when things were simpler, cozy, freedom of mind, a happy, warm outlook towards life ...a sense of warmth within your chest as symbolized by the opening lines "Sunbeams colored me golden brown". "Handstands in the grass" suggest childhood memories, "shadows" (plural) gives us an idea that the person reminiscing her past remembers some people who were in her life, childhood friends maybe, her childhood love or anyone else. She recalls how it used to be. Now, contrast it what she is experiencing now. Feeling the music is very important when one listens to this track. Now it's all the past, some distant past that she is being nostalgic about. "The Water's Deep" symbolizes what the world feels like to her now, like an ocean or a river, deep and cold (cold feeling comes from the music) and she dived in into it, she had to, she grew up, things changed, she had to "dive in". Now using the power of her memories, she is reliving those moments she adored which is symbolized by the line "I caught my breath as I emerged beneath the sun". She is tired, cold and wants to end everything and probably just die ( I don't want to breathe" and she asks someone (maybe God or maybe her father or mother who are no longer with her in her imagination) as a young child would do, oblivious to all the grief, pain and suffering the cold and bitter world has to offer, and who calmly goes to sleep knowing that it's a sweet feeling to be sleeping that everything will be fine the next day he'll wake up. She is feeling broken and tired, the "child" inside her is scared and she is "asking" God or her "parents" is "it will be like sleep". There is a lot of sweet pain in this song if you pay close attention. A beautiful song. |

When i had heard this song, this is what came to my mind naturally. I hadn't seen the video by then. To start with, I think the song is about a girl, who is for some reason or her own lack of confidence, unable to confess her love to the person she loves. The person she loves, is most probably oblivious of the fact that she loves him. Now i am going to explain in line by line. "Love, love is a verb Love is a doing word Fearless on my breath Gentle impulsion Shakes me makes me lighter Fearless on my breath Teardrop on the fire Fearless on my breath" The girl certainly loves this guy. She is sure about it. But for some unspoken reason, she is unable to tell him about her feelings. "Love love is a verb" her feelings are able to come on her lips (verb) in reality, but only when she is alone (Fearless on my breath). A feeling that "shakes and makes her lighter" the feeling of love, makes you feel so elated and blissful. She is feeling that, the happiness is obvious on her lips, but only when she is all by herself, alone. The fire that burns inside her, the passion, which is "fearless on HER breath" extinguishes. or ore appropriately fails to manifest itself before her love or the world (teardrop on the fire). "Nine night of matter Black flowers blossom Fearless on my breath Black flowers blossom Fearless on my breath" These lines again explain how her feelings are visible and obvious when she is alone (night of matter)of matter implies the substance, the certainty of her love. "Black flowers blossom" the flowers signifying her feelings visible so clearly and on her lips and her countenance when she's alone. " Water is my eye Most faithful mirror Fearless on my breath Teardrop on the fire of a confession Fearless on my breath Most faithful mirror Fearless on my breath" These lines show that she is in a lot pain due to fact that she cant tell him her feelings towards her or to the world. Her teardrops reflect her pain, which too, only come out when when is alone. Nobody else but her knows what she is feeling and what she's going through. her tears are her "most faithful mirror" showing her, the reality and show her what she's going through,. It's killing her, keeping it all inside her. I am not sure about "Stumbling a little" part but i think all this is kind of breaking her down. She cant let him know about her feelings and this pressure building inside her is making her weak. But she tells herself to be strong, reminding her that she has to do what is right and correct. Tell me what you think about this Interpretation. |

I think the song is about what love really is. How a person who is madly in love can lead herself (As in this case) to her annihilation (figuratively). " It's unfortunate that when we feel a storm We can roll ourselves over 'cause we're uncomfortable Oh well, the devil makes us sin But we like it when we're spinning in his grip " It says that is it unfortunate that we just "roll ourselves over", meaning, we just go to someone when we are uncomfortable or something is not going right in our life, looking for acceptance, love, to be caressed and taken care of, we desperately start to look for someone close and special, even though we were doing perfectly fine when things were going fine. This tendency, this behavior is dangerous and it makes us a prey of the devil, falling in the "sin" which is what is used to refer to love here. Once we are in love, when we have done that sin, there is no way of coming out and setting ourselves free. "But we like it when we're spinning in his grip" -> We are now liking the feeling, just like alcohol. It doesn't matter what happens to us or our life, even if the world starts to break apart before our eyes, we still consume alcohol just like we are consuming love here, we are getting addicted to love. " Love is like a sin, my love, For the ones that feel it the most Look at her with her eyes like a flame She will love you like a fly will never love you again " The first line of the above para is very important. As you shall see, The person in these lines has already realized how sinful love is and how we, under its control, damage our life as well as someone else's life. IN SPITE OF THIS FACT, she is still in love, as apparent by the part "...,my love". She is still doing the sin and is being controlled by the "devil". She adds that love is a sin for those who really feel it, truly and passionately. She tells his lover that this is how love works. Look at her with love and affection and warmth and she will come to you (as a general rule of nature) blindly and passionately and helplessly only to destroy herself and everything she was and everything she had JUST LIKE a fly helplessly gets attracted to a flame, killing itself. Therefore, as you can see, humans are being compared to flies which just leap into fire and kill themselves, we also let love consume ourselves, even when we know that it's the end and we can't stop this from happening, ever. It's just a matter of time when we "fall" in love. |
