Genesis – Keep It Dark Lyrics 12 years ago
This song, especially its chorus, is absolutely charming. Imagining this other, bright world leaves me with a smile. Although, actually, the story of the man who has been to a better world and now is forced to live again in ours, not even being able to talk about what he's seen, is quite sad.

We know he has been abducted by aliens because Tony Banks said so in one or more interviews. The lyrics themselves don't reveal this, I think.

Genesis – The Lady Lies Lyrics 12 years ago
It's one of my favourite Genesis songs, both musically and lyrically. From the very first chord to the fade-out, it is absolutely haunting and brilliant.

In the beginning, it sounds like the ordinary knight-saves-maiden-tale, but soon our story becomes a lot darker. The chorus is indeed very tasty, and Phil's high-pitched vocals add to it. Just imagine how inviting these lines must sound when sung by a beautiful lady - I'm not surprised our knight cannot resist her. She seems rather confident, too.

The instrumental break (how nice is this!) after the second chorus describes his struggling, torn between reason and lust, but in the end too much attracted to her not to go.
I think, the lines that follow, "So glad you could make it, we had everything arranged", tell us that the lady IS a demon. She is speaking about herself as "we", as if there are two personalities, the woman and the demon, inside her. Also, Phil is now singing her lines in a deeper and dark tone of voice.
"For who can espace, what he desires?" is another great line. So, this, of course, is what we are supposed to learn from Tony Banks's fairy-tale. ;)

I like how they ended the song: slowly fading out, after having given us the appealing chorus for a last time, and leaving the listener to imagine what became of the poor hero in the end.
I don't know about you, but it definitely creates some disturbing pictures in my head - while, at the same time, another part of me forces me to push the repeat button. :)

Incubus – Black Heart Inertia Lyrics 13 years ago
It's the story of someone who is caught in a depressive state, struggling to get out because he realises, he is sick of
his loneliness and negative approach to love.

Walking alone tonight
‘Cause I’ve only got room for two
I love these lines. He knows he'll stay lonely as long as he keeps his black heart. This night, he's at a point where he wants something to change, wants a relationship.

I think the "bigger bang" refers to something deeper than the superficial relationships, which we see so often these days, especially among young couples. People have "cohabitants", "part time lovers", "sex friends", with no need for being committed.
He is looking for a real, lasting relationship. This is stressed again, of course, in the chorus when he wants to "share in the view".

Also, the chorus makes me believe that he is not just talking about love in general. There is a specific girl, "you", who he is into. She is the cause he's trying to overcome his inertia and make a new start (the "first step of a climb").
Clearly, he is in love with her, but he's putting some pressure on her, too: He hopes *she* will solve his problems, when actually it should be him. He repeatedly asks her to erase his black heart, to "send it away". Very human, especially in a new relationship, when the pink glasses are still on, to make the lover responsible for our happiness, isn't it?

I had to look up the word "inertia", had never heard it before, but I think it is well-chosen for this song. (Generally, I like lyrics that are beyond primary-school level and a little challenging, at least for non-natives like me.) It perfectly describes the numb, emotionally cold feeling that the person is trapped in. Also, the music and the lyrics go very well together. The song has this heavy, trotting rhythm, especially in the beginning, which makes you picture someone carrying a burden, but at the same time a catchy, uplifting melody, that, I think, is very motivating, like it's saying: "Go, make the climb!".

Sting – Never Coming Home Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm pretty sure it was inspired by his parents, his mum running away from home (though she did return later) in a secret, yet perfectly calculated, plan while his dad was at work.
In his autobiography, "Broken Music", where we learn about this incident, he says that back then he has sided with his father and couldn't forgive his mother for what she did until it was too late. I think the song is an attempt to understand both sides.

Anyway, Sting's songs use to have more than one source of inspiration or layer and what he describes here is a perfect picture of thousands of married couples, whether one of them eventually escapes or just keeps on dreaming about it.
I love how he includes symbols of the everyday routine, eg. the girl with an umbrella (like there are hundreds at the train station, looking just the same), the husband expecting her to wake him, then his everyday bathroom procedure etc. It shows how routine can trap us, make us blind to the things that happen around us and for the woman, makes it even harder for her to escape.

PS: Sting's mum left no letter.

Sting – The Book Of My Life Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this is one of the best songs Sting has ever written, the music is totally gripping and the lyrics are as beautiful as honest. I find it a very inspiring song. It really gets you into the mood of reflecting, whether you are lucky and have a fireplace at your home or not.

Some thoughts on the song:

The "ghost who won't die" is easy to identify: his father. Still, Sting has mentioned several times that he believes in ghosts and that we need them in our life, for guidance and reflection. So maybe he's also talking about "good ghosts" in general.

"There's a chapter on love where the ink's never dry" - very beautiful line and also one of my favourite paragraphs in "Broken Music": when he shares his thoughts about this big thing we call "Love".
That the ink is never dry could mean that love is everlasting and always in motion. It could also refer to the stormy, passionate sexual love that young lovers feel and the impatience that comes with it. Another topic he deals with very honestly in "Broken Music".

As for the "you" in the last stanza, I agree with vittau's interpretation: It is himself - the man he has become because of all the good and bad "chapters" in his life and is now.
Of course, "all that's left is you" could easily be interpreted as a declaration of love to a woman, but I don't think it makes sense here as the whole song is about Sting and his life, not in any way is it a love song. Plus - and I mean that in the most positive way - the person that Sting has always been most faithful to throughout his life is himself!
I think what he wants to say is: In the end there is only one thing that is important: Who you are and how you've lived your life and that, when reflecting on it, you can say "It was good.", no matter what other people might think.

Sting – Send Your Love Lyrics 14 years ago
"Bad poets borrow. Good poets steal." ; )
Sting names William Blake and Blake's view on religion as an inspiration to this song in his book "Lyrics".

Actually, I think the whole lyrics read like a poem, I love them, and I feel they were somehow wasted on the disco-like music.

"You see the stars are moving so slowly
But still the earth is moving so fast
Can't you see the moon is so lonely
She's still trapped in the pain of the past"

Great lines! They pretty much sum up the time we live in - in a very poetic way. For those who prefer prose, there's the "no religion but sex and music ..." paragraph. ; )

Genesis – Counting Out Time Lyrics 14 years ago
Among the most hilarious song texts ever! Peter Gabriel hit the nail on the head. ; )
You feel sympathy for our poor boy, but at the same time laugh about his desperate attempt to learn love-making from a book. : ))

I love the silly rhyming which he keeps on throwing in very consciously:
resting - for this testing, button - nuttin, distress - from my mistress : D
I also like the sarcastic subtone in the last stanza: "I'll get my money back from the bookstore right away".

Genesis – A Trick Of The Tail Lyrics 14 years ago
One of my favourite Genesis-songs, with great narrative and very descriptive lyrics.

Everytime I listen to it, I immediately picture the beast and his city and his journey. For me, this song is made to remind us there is more between heaven and earth than we know or dare to imagine.

I also see it as an homage to man's phantasy and imagination. I think even grown-ups in this modern, reason-based world, as we are, need phantasy and the pictures or stories that it creates. If we keep our mind open and our imagination alive, we may one day be rewarded by being shown "a living story". ; )

PS: What do you think the beast looks like? I know it says "horns", but I can't help thinking of a beautiful unicorn. I think it's the melody, it sounds like a trot or canter.

Genesis – Undertow Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this is one of the most moving songs ever!
The music is just brilliant. As for the lyrics, I actually find them very uplifting:

Telling us that everyday we should remind ourselves that life is a treasure and therefore we have to seize the day (instead of waiting for a tomorrow that never appears).
The chorus with the description of how we'd react to our last day is just beautiful.

I don't think the person in the song is really ill or going to die. To my mind, it seems more like someone - averagely happy, averagely wealthy - is suddenly struck by the insight that life is precious. In the first stanza, the thought of other (poor) people not surviving the night starts him thinking about "the last day". In the second stanza, he realises that a day spent with drinking wine and doing nothing is a wasted day and that he wouldn't do so if he knew his time left on earth was limited.

Sarah McLachlan – Full Of Grace Lyrics 14 years ago
I've first heard the song on the best TV series ever: "due SOUTH" (a Canadian production about a Mountie in Chicago, anyone remember?)

It was played in part one of the series's finale and the beautiful melody as well as the lyrics seemed to express the emotions of all three main charactes so perfectly.

More than 11 years later, I still come back to this song every now and then, not only because it reminds me of the show, but also because it's simply an amazing, touching, haunting piece of music! It gets me into day-dreaming every time.

Maroon 5 – She Will Be Loved Lyrics 14 years ago
They have known each other for a long time (and also had a sexual relationship during one point or the other) and he feels responsible for her.

She is extremely insecure and has suffered a lot. She's probably in a relationship with a man who treats her badly, hurts her one way or the other, hits or misuses her maybe, in other words: She is NOT loved. But for some reason, like it often is, she's not strong enough to leave him.

The singer wants to change her life, make things better for her, make her "be loved", but he's also quite insecure and not strong or brave enough to really change anything.

So, summing up, it's about two people who know that there must be more to life than what they currently have but somehow they haven't made up their mind yet on how to change things.

I also love the "rainbows and butterflies" line, one of the best lines Adam has ever written!

Maroon 5 – Can't Stop Lyrics 14 years ago
This song reminds me of The Police in their early years - the quick tempo, the catchy melody, the high-pitched voice and most of all:
The lyrics seem like a mix of "Can't Stand Losing You" and "The Bed's Too Big Without You" (both excellent Police songs with hilarious lyrics)!
There's even the exact same reference to "making love to my pillow" in "The Bed's Too Big..." ; )

It's not such a big surprise, given the fact that Adam declared himself as a big Police fan and named them among who has musically influenced him.
I like how this is so obvious in many of their songs, especially this one, but how they still managed to make their own song out of it, with their own sound.

Sting – Spread a Little Happiness Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm not sure if he was really happy when he wrote this. I think he just tried to write one of those happy-whappy nice tunes with some 50's feeling to it. The melody and the lyrics and the whistling and all, it reminds me of "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head".

I think every now and then Sting wanted and tried something that was not his usual style, whether it was just for fun or whether he saw it as a way of developing as a song writer. Like he said he wrote "De Do Do Do..." because he was interested in what attracts us to those simple phrases like "Do Wah Diddy".

Whatever his reasons were to write this, I like the song but even more the video for it (Sting as a dancing priest, oh my Lord).

Sting – Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot Lyrics 14 years ago
This is one of the most relaxing and most uplifting songs ever!

To my mind, it is also very true. In the end (when everything else has failed or become unimportant) our soul and what our soul wants and needs is the only thing that matters.

In our modern, hurried world we often forget that we even have a soul - we do what we ought to do, what people expect from us, what society asks of us, what we've been told was right, ... But every now and then, we need a moment all on our own, to recover not only our exhausted bodies but also our souls. Personally, good and uplifting music has always been what helps me best to recover. ; )

Sting – I Need You Like This Hole in My Head Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this one!
First, because I love dolphins.

Second, because I like the play with words. I've always liked it when Sting's titles sound so different from what the song really means. When you only read the title, you would assume it means that "I don't need you at all" for, really, who of us needs a whole in their head? But when you hear/read the whole story, it suddenly means the total opposite, namely "You're everything! I need you like the air I breathe"!

The "hole" in a dolphin's head is its nose; their nose is not in the front of their faces like with most other mammals, just in case you hadn't known. *biologylessonisover*

Sting – Fragile Lyrics 14 years ago
How can there only be 16 comments on a song so beautiful, so powerful, so true??

The song was inspired by the death of an innocent man who was mistaken for an enemy and killed when all he actually wanted was to help. I don't know what is worse: killing someone accidentally/by mistake or killing someone because you want to...

To me, the song points out that either way, all forms of violence, are brutal, tragic and most of all useless (nothing comes from them)!
And if not you object to violence in general, perhaps you need the death of an innocent to awake you and make you re-think the methods and use of war or violence. I think that's what Sting means with "Perhaps this final act was meant to clinch a lifetime's argument..."

I totally agree with Sting (well, I always do, I think *g*)!

I agree with you, the cards metaphore is new, creative and very beautiful.
And we've recently seen that NOT everyone can use it and make it work (I'm referring to Lady Ga-Ga's "Poker Face", which is a nice tune, I admit, but the lyrics are crap and the way she uses the game/cards as a metaphore in it is just ridiculous.)

The Police – Dead End Job Lyrics 14 years ago
Very straight-forward and most definitely autobiographical. ; )

"The queue gets longer every day, all I wanna do is play" - I think he's refering to the days when he had to queue up for his jobseeker's allowance and that was the only money he had, but the dream of becoming a professional musician and being able to live from music was always stronger than all the money troubles.

Like he says in "Broken Music", he did not know for certain that he'd become a star one day, it just seemed that no other job than professional musician did work out for him and that's why he carried on working on that dream.

This is most probably my favourite B-side/unknown Police song ever!
It creates an amazing atmosphere and I love how the melody just keeps on flowing while the lyrics tell us of the tragedy that happened.
And I love how Sting's voice sounds so young in this song - as if he wants to emphasise how young and innocent the couple was and how the whole life of the young man is ruined before it had even begun.

The Police – I Burn For You Lyrics 14 years ago
Yes, I agree, in context with the "Brimstone & Treacle" movie the song is really creepy!

However, the song wasn't written for the movie, Sting wrote it while he was still in "Last Exit" (the band he played with before The Police) and I think it was inspired by his first wife, Frances.
Personally, I think the Last Exit demo version of this song is even more haunting than the one he did with The Police. Very atmospheric song!

Anyway, that's probably the only Police song I never listen to because I just can't stand the French. There's a reason why very few rock songs are sung in French, it just doesn't sound good. ; ) It would have been so much hotter if the lyrics had been in English. *sigh*

Sting – Tomorrow We'll See Lyrics 14 years ago
Teenage transvestite prostitutes? I didn't even know such a cruel "job" exists! I've always wondered why he's refering to the friend that ended up dead as a "he". I mean, sure, there are male prostitutes too but it's not very common (at least in our society).

Anyway, not knowing what this song was actually about, I've always seen it as Roxanne's answer to the young man who loved her so desperately. ; )
She's trying to explain why she can't come with him: She's somehow trapped in her way of life but she's also afraid to leave this life. As horrible as it may seem to us, it's her everyday routine - she's good at her job and it's the only life she knows. She'd rather carry on "walking the streets for money" than trying to get out and maybe risking not succeeding in a new life.

I think this is a general problem of many prostitutes/criminals. They are so used to the life they are living that they are afraid to leave it behind because they think it's the only thing they are good at. And they hide their fears behind the excuse that it's only "one more night and tomorrow we'll see".

Sting – Perfect Love Gone Wrong Lyrics 14 years ago
As I love dogs, I just gotta love the song! : )
I adore Sting for picking up this sad topic of a dog becoming unimportant and singing it from the dog's point of view!

This paragraph for example is perfectly sad and touching:

I howl all night and I sleep all day
It takes more than a biscuit, baby, to chase these blues away
I've got a long enough leash
I could almost hang myself
It's a dog's life loving you baby

What confused me when I first listened to the song and what I find quite funny is that even Sting's dog seems to have attitude. *g* It's quite unusual for a dog to say things like:

- I'll wear my best collar to his funeral
- Runner up and second best just ain't my pedigree

: D Don't get me wrong, I still love these lines from a lyrical point of view!

Note: On YouTube someone commented the music video of this song with "Maybe Sting is our Faust..." and though I never thought of it before, this isn't so wrong:

Sting is multi-talented, charismatic and a bit of a control freak - definitely similarities to Faust! : )
Plus, Mephisto tries to seduce Faust and get his soul by showing him all the joys and sins life offers. I could imagine the woman in the song does a similar thing and that's why he's refering to Mephistopheles.

Wow, love the song even more with this thought in my mind (as I love "Faust", the play)!

The Police – Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic Lyrics 14 years ago
OK, I got an approach that just came to my mind, thought I'd share it with you:

Maybe the guy is behaving in the way that he describes because, unconsciously, he doesn't want a real relationship with her at all. I mean, if you're extremely in love with someone and just watch them from a distance, it's easy to declare everything they do as "magic". You idealise the other person.
If they became a couple, he'd maybe find out that she wasn't that magical after all and that love isn't always sunshine and butterflies. That's why it's actually easier and better for him to go on admiring her from a distance.

The reason I got this idea is that while the lyrics are so sad, if you listen to the song, you automatically get happy! : )
So I concluded: He's trying to make the whole world believe that he's unhappy and desperate but deep inside him he's actually happy with the situation as it is and enjoys his mad infatuation and secret love.

But then, it could also be just another example of Sting mixing sad, serious lyrics with a catchy pop melody. : D

Love it! The melody is so catchy and the lyrics are just sweet.

He's totally in love, maybe for the first time (as he had never felt the same with the "thousand" girls he had before), and actually can't believe this big thing called love is happening to him ("goin' insane" and "I just don't know what's come over me").

The Police – Wrapped Around Your Finger Lyrics 14 years ago
I knew this song existed but I refused to listen to this song for some time, when I first got into The Police, simply because the title sounded so slushy. *g* You can imagine how surprised I was when I finally did listen to it for the first time! It's a wonderful song and without doubt one of the most atmospheric songs ever written! It captivates you from the very first second to the last and you can really feel the tension and sexual heat!

I don't believe that this song describes only one particular situation. It could be about a forbidden relationship with a married woman (although I never thought of it this way), it could as well be about the relationship between a younger man and an elder woman who's teaching him, then it could be Goethe's "Sorcerer's Apprentice", only with an extra portion of erotic added, ...

I especially like the last stanza when the apprentice shows us he's not as innocent and dumb as everyone thinks - what an unusual and fresh ending to the story!
And if you haven't loved The Police before, you will start to love them from the point where the drums come in and Sting turns "your face to alabaster" in his most distinctive tone of voice!

The Police – King Of Pain Lyrics 14 years ago
This is another wonderful, outstanding Police-song and another poem written by Sting! The lyrics alone would be enough to make you feel all the pain - and to vote Sting among the best (song)writers ever, in my opinion.

He uses very powerful imagery in this song (lots of nature references and adjectives) which makes it easy for us to picture all of his examples. I can see the poor red fox running and the black hat hanging in the tree, lost and torn.

I love the fact that Sting didn't choose the typical symbols for pain we usually get to hear in music, like a broken heart, a dark night, a man alone on the street etc. He decided to give us the big picture, listing several examples of pain found in nature or in everyday life. This makes the song sounding simply authentic instead of slushy.

This song creates such a sad but beautiful atmosphere around me everytime I listen to it!

At first, it sounds as if it was just describing the feelings of someone who's suffering from a depression at the moment. However, with the lines "I could be replaced by any bright star" and "Instead of worrying about my clothes ..." they make it very clear that it's about the dark sides of being famous.

I also love the line "Life was easy when it was boring" - this is somehow true, I often thought the same during the more exciting but also exhausting periods in my life.

Genesis – Tonight, Tonight, Tonight Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with you that the lines (and the music vid) make it very easy for one to think of a drug addict when listening to this song. However, to me personally it always described a more general feeling of despair and helplessness.

I can really see the singer wandering alone during dark streets at night, not really knowing what to do next or where to go, just knowing that this time - tonight - he has to do something differently to make it right.

The lyrics consist of short, easy sentences - which I think was done on purpose because it emphasises the narrator's mood: He's desperate and can't think clearly anymore which makes it impossible for him to think/speak in long, straight sentences.

This part makes me shiver everytime I hear it:

Please get me out of here
Someone get me out of here
Just help me I'll do anything, anything
If you'll just help get me out of here

The music and the way Phil sings these lines go straight into my heart!
Most probably the best song about addiction, helplessness and the wish to escape from it ever written!

The Police – Don't Stand So Close To Me Lyrics 15 years ago
This was the first song of The Police I listened to, long before I finally became fond of this wonderful band - and it was simply because at that time I had a crush on one of my teachers too. : )

Actually I saw Sting perform it live at a German TV-show and I couldn't believe that there was a song that described my feelings so perfectly!

No surprise, I go along with the other users who said it was about the pain and difficulty of forbidden love - and the love is mutual, that's actually quite obvious.

I always interpreted the chorus as sung from both sides. They don't want to be too close because it makes it even harder for them to resist their (forbidden) feelings but also because they don't want people to know that they have a special relationship. The chorus is a simple as true - just one line but it sums up all the difficulties of the relationship!

Two more things I find interesting:

The teacher is described both as "young" (in the first stanza) and "old" (like the old man in that book). I think this is a clever way of showing that it always depends on your point of view. For the girl, he's young enough to fall in love with him and wanting a romantic relationship with him. She doesn't see the different age group he's in (believe me, it IS this way, back then I really thought that a 15-year-old girl and a thirty-something-year-old man could make a perfect couple).
On the other hand, the man can't help feeling old and maybe like a paedophile when standing next to her.

I aways found the following line the "proof" that they are a secret couple:
"Wet bus stop she's waiting
His car is warm and dry"
So although they know that they shouldn't be together, they can't resist it. He can't resist saving her from the rain and giving her shelter (!) and she can't resist his invitation and gets into the car (the car being a symbol for a totally different life/world she's entering). This is such a perfect picture!

The Police – Secret Journey Lyrics 15 years ago
@ DJgif:

Oh sure, that would make sense! I actually like the idea: The narrator meets the older and wiser version of himself (the holy man) who tells him that he shouldn't worry because eventually everything had worked out well (or will work out well, depending on which point of view you're talking from).

In general, I think this is a very nice song of describing the relationship to a person, older than you and experienced in how to handle their life, who had a special influence on you (eg. your parents, a teacher, an older colleague/friend).

"And as the world was turning
It rolled itself in pain
This does not seem to touch you
He pointed to the rain
You will see light in the darkness
You will make some sense of this "

I think what these lines want to say is: When you're young, you often worry too much about things (you think the problem you're just dealing with is so big that it makes the earth roll in pain) and every now and then it's good to have someone older and wiser around you, who proves you that life always goes on and that maybe you will see things from a different point of view as time goes on.

However, for the younger one it's often difficult to understand what the older one wants to tell them, simply because they lack personal experience:

"I listened to his words
I strained to understand him
I chased his thoughts like birds"

As for the image of the "holy man": A priest recently told me that in the Catholic church, somebody who's "holy" is not seen as a perfect person but as someone "who made the best of their talents given" or, speaking more informally, "who did it right".
I don't know if Sting meant it that way when he chose the word "holy", but anyway I think it fits.

In our world there's no time for sorrow
In their world there is no tomorrow

Ouch! What true words!

The Police – On Any Other Day Lyrics 15 years ago
The lyrics are hilarious! I love that sarcastic tone included.
As for the meaning, it's similar to "Synchronicity II"; a man who can't deal with his family problems anymore - only here the situation is described in a less dark and serious way.

Sting – When The Angels Fall Lyrics 15 years ago
I have two approaches to this song:

1) It could be about a person (maybe Sting himself) turning his back on religion because he doesn't believe in it anymore. The angels he believed in (when he was a child) fall and the churches break down, meaning they are not important to him any longer. ("You can't control us anymore")

2) My second idea is that it's not about a specific person but about our society in general turning its back on religion and that Sting is actually criticising this.

In our generation, the angels are not important to us (although they still watch us and keep us safe). People don't believe in God anymore or at least they don't think he has enough power to influence their lives: "Your hands are empty [...] You can't control us"

People are more interested in satisfying their individual (material) needs and they only have faith in themselves. The emphasis is on the individual. That's how the lines
"These are my feet, These are my hands, These are my children, And this is my demand"
could be interpreted.

Either way, it's a very sad song. I wish he had chosen something a little less depressing to end the album.

Sting – The Soul Cages Lyrics 15 years ago
This song could have so many different meanings, but to me it seems as if it was nothing more or less than an interesting and frightening story Sting wanted to tell. He's the master of narrative lyrics and he likes telling tales (and he's damned good at it).

The fisherman and the brave young boy are fantastic characters and the idea of someone collecting human souls like birds makes me shiver.

The very last stanza, however, is the most powerful. The way how Sting sings it, so full of emotions, and the image of the Newcastle ship almost make me cry.

Sting – They Dance Alone (Cueca Solo) Lyrics 15 years ago
This song touches me everytime I hear it.

I think even after having written and recorded this song, he still couldn't believe that those things he sang about were actually happening. There's a little bit of surprise left in his voice and that's what makes it even more touching.

I don't think that this song is only sad. The lines

One day we'll dance on their graves
One day we'll sing our freedom
One day we'll laugh in our joy
And we'll dance..

appeal quite positive to me - he's sure that one day things will change eventually and to honor the women we'll dance on their graves.

Check out this live performance where Sting and Peter Gabriel dance with the real women ("los madres") in the end! It breaks your heart!

Sting – Fortress Around Your Heart Lyrics 15 years ago
virtuallypainless - Thanks a lot for your interpretation, it's great!

I loved this song (both music and lyrics) from the first time I heard it but I never really got the meaning of it (maybe because I cannot relate it to anything in my own life).

This song is a poem! Period.

Sting – Be Still My Beating Heart Lyrics 15 years ago
I consider this as one of the most beautiful songs ever written! (Especially the lines "I sink like a stone that's been thrown in the ocean, my logic has drowned in a sea of emotions" - awwwww, so beautiful)

It's often said that Sting is a little control freak and in this song I can really picture him, trying to keep his heart under control but it doesn't work out.

Sting – Everybody Laughed But You Lyrics 15 years ago
During the first stanza it sounds as if it was a love song but as the song goes on, it's not that clear anymore.

Personally, this song reminds me of something (not a person, it's actually a TV series) that is very important to me and has influenced me all through my life. Other people often don't understand how a TV show and its fictitious characters can be so important (so they laugh) but as the years go by, friends come and friends go, but I know for sure that this one thing will always stay and whenever I need it, I just open my cupboard and get it! : )

Sting – All This Time Lyrics 15 years ago
I love how the music and the lyrics are so completely different! This is a pop song which the radio stations love to play but I think hardly any of them has ever listened to the dark and sad lyrics.

I think the main message of this song is that religions think of themselves as being more important and influental than they actually are.
And that sometimes rites just annoy you and hinder you from finding your peace.
