Florence + the Machine – Remain Nameless Lyrics 12 years ago
I logged in just to say I love your interpretation! I didn't think of this and, while I'm still not sure it's the truest meaning to me, it's definitely fitting. I really, really like the idea. :)

Florence + the Machine – Hardest of Hearts Lyrics 12 years ago
To me this song is about unrequited love- someone is in love, and either can't (b/c of fear or b/c of the circumstances) express how they feel.

I mostly think this b/c I am applying my own circumstances to the song, but I just imagine that when do the "Sweetest of words have the bitterest taste"? When you can't say them and have to hold them in. They burn away at you b/c they want released, to be expressed. :)

Meh, could be wrong, but it's just what I think of. Yay.

Adele – My Same Lyrics 12 years ago
That's kind of awesome, b/c when I hear this song I think of me and my best friend, not me and a guy! Haha! I wonder why it's her "ex" best friend... :-\ *runs off worried about friendship* lol.

I love this song, but does anyone else think it sounds more like she says "lying prostate on the ground" instead of "prostrate"? I mean I know it's not supposed to be prostate, but still. :)

Yeah, apparently it's a B-side to "Elephants..."... here's a youtube link where you can hear it. :)

Sweet baby Jesus I second what everyone else said- the most genius, well thought through interpretation of a song I've ever read. Well done. :)

Kate Nash – Mansion Song Lyrics 14 years ago
Yeah I love this song, too.

Every time I listen to it, though, I find myself going "what the f*** does she mean about 'take a piece of raw vegetable and hold it to your breast'?!"

SO any ideas? That is the one part that stumps me every time. Is it some English slang that I don't know about here in the America's, or just a metaphor I'm missing lol. Sometimes I think of a limp piece of celery that she's clinging to, all sad that it's limp hehe... I don't know why, though, that makes no sense. I just thought I'd throw in what I always picture hehe. :)

Thanks!

Regina Spektor – Sunshine Lyrics 14 years ago
Ok, well, bare with me here b/c this is the first time I've had a thought about this song (beyond the obvious "I want some sunshine in my winter and rainy days" interpretation, and it's going to take a bit to get my thoughts into words lol. BUT this song kind of reminds me of someone who is her (or whoever's) "sunshine", he lights up her sky, right? But he has some anger issues and possibly is bipolar. She wants her sunshine back, for him to come back from his swing into a horrible mood/state. Hence the last stanza. Like the beginning of the song is her being all happy with him when he's in a good state, and then the end is him going into a bad state and her pleading for him to come back.

Well, that's my two cents... I hope it was understandable- it IS 8am and I am still asleep hehe. :)

This song SO reminds me of Bjork! Anyone else? There's one song in particular that this reminds me of... Ooops. Does anyone else know this song? I think it's the random screaming sounds lol. I'd post a link but I can't find it on youtube. :)

Kate Nash – Don't You Want to Share the Guilt? Lyrics 14 years ago
This was what I thought, too. :) It kind of makes sense now... the bit about "don't you want to share the guilt?" Is kind of like don't you want to share the load/burden? You know? Just an idea. :)

And that is the beauty of her music to me, that really there is no right or wrong. But I love hearing other people's interpretations and comparing it to my own, even expanding my own idea of the song. But ultimately like you said there is no right or wrong, only what it means to me. And I love it. :)

Regina Spektor – Pavlov's Daughter Lyrics 14 years ago
You do have some interesting points there, although I don't quite feel the same way you do about this song overall. Still really interesting. Just a thought (this is why I wanted to post): where she says "I hear them say my name Regina, Regina, Regina-a-ah..." maybe it's the machine/everyone in it calling her name and trying to pull her in? I think that'd fit the theme of your post. Just a thought. :)

Wow I really like this interpretation. I never thought of it this way before but a lot what you said makes sense to me. Hmm... :D Even if it's not actually what she meant when she wrote it, it fits for me (and you apparently) haha.

Bahahaha! Maybe you're right, but I literally just laughed out loud. I doubt it really means VAGINA. Hahaha. I wish she was a lesbian, I'd get with her hehe. If I ever got the chance... anyway, my point is I have nothing against the idea of her being lesbian (I even would like that) but I really don't think that's what this song is about.

Funny idea though! :D

If I had heard this live I am positive I would've bawled my eyes out. I almost cry every time I hear it anyway. It is a very moving song about a very moving/awful subject. :( Belt also makes me cry every time I hear it, if any of you have heard that one (although it makes me cry for a little different reason).

Regina Spektor – Left Hand Song Lyrics 14 years ago
Funny story that turned into a "ah-ha!" moment for this song.

Yesterday I bought an Izze Sparkling Blackberry drink (I dunno if any of you have heard of it, but it's my favorite and it comes in a glass bottle). Anyway, I hadn't had one in a long time so I was sooooo excited to drink it! I saved it for when I got home so that I could have it with dinner. I cooked my dinner still without drinking it, and finally went to eat/drink and BAM I knocked it on the floor and it shattered!!!! I wanted to cry (it was just one of those long frustrating days and that was my "reward").

In case you can't guess where this is going now (hehe) all I could think was "a lesson in how fleeting preservation is". I.e. what's the point of "preserving" things when lots of times the preservation doesn't even last (like the old meatball in tinfoil- I imagine it to be all moldy and old now, but at the time I'm sure someone was like "mmm! save that for later!). So it kind of made me start thinking of this song as an "enjoy things now while you can't, don't wait for later since it's not even promised to us!"

That's my 2 cents. :D

Every time she gets to the part that's like "I say that very same thing to myself, all the time, I say 'yo girl... can't you watch where you're going?...'" I literally start to cry b/c it's just so raw and... I dunno... pitiful. No matter how hard I try not to it just breaks my heart.

Regina Spektor – Begin to Hope Lyrics 14 years ago
Does anyone else think the intro music sounds a lot like "Man of a Thousand Faces"? I think it's that song almost every time I first hear it, if that made sense.

Anyway, to me this song isn't really about ignoring evil (or not ignoring it), it's about having hope and allowing yourself to believe in yourself and be happy. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think this song is more about being yourself and here in the moment, not getting caught up in other s***. Because somehow when she says "begin to hope" I think of "begin to have hope in yourself". Maybe that's just me making the song apply to my current life situation though. :D

I hope that made a little sense haha, I'm sick and tired so my brain's not completely functioning. :)

Regina Spektor – Wallet Lyrics 15 years ago
I didn't think I was going to like this song b/c it sounds so simple, yet it's one of my favorites from the new album! I don't even know where to start hahaha.

A) It's a cute song
B) I love how she says "an old piece of juicy fruit" LOL
C) I think it's about a girl finding a wallet and all, like Krazyglue said, but I think the deeper point here (to me at least) is that two people are being connected without actually knowing or meeting each other, if you get what i mean.

Regina Spektor – Machine Lyrics 15 years ago
Ok, first of all I want to say I love this song! It reminds me a lot of Bjork, if any of you listen to her. :D

Second of all, I'm sure my meaning isn't the right one, but to me this song is more about people all being connected into the "machine" of human kind. And the whole "collecting my moments into a higher power" bit is about people talking to God, and how God wishes to be part of humanity in a way. Especially because it says "a mightier power/who just lacks my perspectives/ and who lacks my organics/and who covets my defects"- it just makes me think of some like high perfect being who wishes to be able to connect on a human level.

...

Now that I think about it that describes a machine, too, in some ways. Now that I REALLY think about it "God" and machines have a lot in common. Hehe.

Ok, well, just had to contribute my two cents. :D

I love this song! The funniest part is the first time I heard it I was like "eh" and the second time I was like "I CAN'T STOP LISTENING!" haha. Does anyone else feel like a few songs on this album are reminiscent of Bjork? (this one and Machine remind me of her the most) Just curious. :D

How could I have missed that! It does seem obvious now haha. I definitely agree about the giving up on religion and good is better than "perfect" according to the bible! Thanks for that insight. :)

Regina Spektor – Man of a Thousand Faces Lyrics 15 years ago
OH, I forgot to mention the religious undertones for me. I was raised in a super ... what's the word... fundamentalist religion, so now as a liberal adult the idea of religion has negative undertones to me, even though I'm still religious (I know it's contradictory, but I figured some background info would explain my interpretation here).

So all that to say the part about "to a place of no religion" and stuff actually makes me think of a place that's stress free- once again he's not feeling the pressures of anyone on him to be someone else. Including religious pressures. :)

Regina Spektor – Man of a Thousand Faces Lyrics 15 years ago
OK- first of all like mli said, that line about "good is better than perfect" really hit me like a ton of bricks (in a good way). It's helped me a ton. :)

Anywhoser, I just wanted to give my "opinion" here. I think that like love_is_free said it's about a man who puts on a different face for everyone to please everyone, and he kind of gets lost sometimes not knowing who his true self is. However, when he's home alone he can be himself, and he begins his "quiet ascension" into being himself, and the only person who really sees his true self is the moon, a "stranger" in that he's obviously never met her, but a way she does know the true him.

Haha, I may be way off base there- but that's just kind of what I think of when I hear this song. It may have just became my new favorite Regina song, though. It hits so close to home in some ways!

Regina Spektor – One More Time with Feeling Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree... yet somehow parts of it sound good. Like the chorus part with the "cymbals" (I don't know percussion terms). It just feels like someone trying to sound and fake happy but obviously they're not. But besides that part I think I liked the acoustic version better b/c it had more feeling!

Oh yeah I get that same vibe. And the "I'll believe it all, I won't let go of your hand" bit makes me think of someone holding their partner's hand like "oh, yeah, uh-huh... I bet honey" but not actually listening to a single thing, you know? Like "oh, yeah, I believe you, whatever". It's interesting it's got such a happy beat to it though. I guess like a lot of relationships (at least a lot that I know)- they seem happy but if you know much about them they aren't. :(

Regina Spektor – Folding Chair Lyrics 15 years ago
Ok, at first I thought I didn't like the new version- I'm so used to it being a little bit faster! But now that I heard the song all the way through a few times I actually really like some of the new background noises! And I love how the "ooohs" after "dolphin song" sound like a dolphin going "oih oih oih!" haha!

Anyway, as for the meaning- to me I've always thought it's about this lady who has a "perfect life"- a son, a husband, a perfect body, etc. But either she's secretly sad or something happens and she's sad and goes to this abandoned beach and thinks about things and about dying. I dunno, that's what it meant to me. :)
