I think it's about AIDS, and that the only thing that can provide real comfort to the victims is faith. "And I'm not your favorite one/But who will walk you out when it's all done?" The use of the word "fun" substitutes for/plays on the word "gay". "And how can it be that fun/When everyone around you dies so young?" It deals, also, with shame and ignorance. "No one knows where you are" - Because the afflicted one left because of judgement by those around him - "And no one thought you'd ever get that far" - the judgemental ones are actually uninformed about the disease itself. Alan and Mimi are fantastic musicians and songwriters, but this song bothers me. |
