But, I'm pretty sure InTheFade86ed had it right with the "shoot the shit" being another drug euphamism.

You guys are all dumbasses! his screen name is rednek4jesuswhtpwr! It's obviously a sarcastic comment meant to make self righteous idiots respond with there opinions, which I should say are much more annoying than the trolls themselves. Then you go on to poke fun of his intentionally bad grammar only to your own intellectual demise. God people, take a logic class or something. Quit being so fukin stupid.

Nirvana – Oh, Me Lyrics 15 years ago
I think the song is actually about nirvana(the state). Losing a mile to touch feelings would be moving backwards from a state of nirvana back to an emotional state. He would lose his soul because the way he does because he would come back to nirvana. In buddhism Nirvana is the last stage of a soul's life, so losing your soul in buddhism is attaining nirvana. Part of understanding a state of nirvana is the realization that no matter what happens the result is perfect. For example, you fail out of college, the result is perfect because as you fail the system educating you fails too leading to a change, the world is always changing and change exists. That's old news because he's already been in a state of nirvana and understands understanding. Its about reaching nirvana and coming back to reach it again. It could be a metaphor for getting high through a vague interpretation of the state nirvana, reaching a perceived state of nirvana through drug use, if he comes back down he'll get high again and lose his soul on the way(shame).

I think you should go into your own idea further. I think you are right about people searching for the level surface. You should dig deeper in your own mind and have confidence in your answer instead of regressing to the accepted standard of the board. You are absolutely correct in your intuitive response, but you need to see that for yourself.

Nirvana – Plateau Lyrics 15 years ago
The selfish cowardice and insatiable desire for mediocre achievement that humans possess causes a regression to a flat social mean. This song expresses this.

This song is about the middle class. The middle class is the social plateau, or flat middle ground of life. Holy ghost and talkshow hosts chaperon people on their way to mediocrity. What are probably the tow most prominent influences in a middle class life? I would guess religion and television. Who needs action when you've got words points out complacency when it comes to taken action to solve/read your problems/aspirations. Instead, of doing something we clean it up with a bucket and a mop. The illustrated book about birds tells of the vain attempts to acquire useless knowledge to impress the other lifeless souls on the plateau. Go into many average middle class homes and you can find an illustrated book about birds sitting on a bookshelf(my grandparents and my father come to mind). It's a depressing song because its a true warning of where average aimed, structured aspirations(wife and kids, house and a yard, median salary) take us. Once we begin to realize the mundane life we lead we search for the next plateau(midlife crisis).
