LCD Soundsystem – Pow Pow Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't know for sure, but I think you guys may be over-thinking this one. To me this is just James Murphy's response to his current place in his career, his life, and the music community. He has gotten to a point where he is able to be less temperamental, calmer, and accepting. I love his little off-handed comments at the end of some of the verses, like when he says "you know, there are a lot of good places to eat." He has a new perspective on the things going on around him, and that allows him to slow down and enjoy what he has.

Or, its a huge, glaring political statement. Thats just my two cents.

MGMT – Congratulations Lyrics 14 years ago
I really agree with you on a lot of this. I especially like what you said about how not going through the minutia of the grunt work leads to a sort of disillusionment and isolation from reality. That is something I had never thought of before. Great insight!

MGMT – Congratulations Lyrics 14 years ago
Who cares if they are popular or not though? I really like their music. Shouldn't that be all that matters to me? If you are listening to music to flaunt you're tastes to those who are less involved in the whole music scene, are you really any better than the "poseurs?" No, you're not. You're worse. Sorry for the rant, I guess i am in a bad mood.

MGMT – Congratulations Lyrics 14 years ago
First of all, I have to say, Congratulations is an incredible album. I am really impressed with what they did.

Does anyone else get a sense that these guys are seriously trying to distance themselves from the people who only liked the "hits" on the first record? Obviously this album is significantly less mainstream-friendly, and they are refusing to put out any singles. Plus I see this song as them feeling almost guilty at all the praise they are getting.

This is how I see it. They have said before their plan has always been to infiltrate popular culture, then freak everyone out. But they have also said that on Oracular Spectacular, most of the songs were masked with irony, and that that album is not truly "them." So they infiltrated, but now they see that they are only known for the facade of irony they put up on OS. So they decide that now they are reasonably popular, its time to show the world who they really are, and they know that "popular" culture may not completely embrace their new persona. So they are purposefully distancing themselves from what they used to be. It's a theory, its probably wrong.

Anyway, specifically about this song; to me, its about how the fame and adulation they have gained is not only strange to them, but it's not for the reasons they want. They are skeptical to accept this fame, because it has come because of the aforementioned ironic facade. Also, they are making fun of the petty problems that come with fame. "Its hardly a sink or swim when all is well if the ticket sells."

The Flaming Lips – Watching the Planets Lyrics 14 years ago
God this song is good. As is the whole album.

I feel like this song is about the human race's futile attempts to figure out and define everything.

Like, sometimes, you just have to let things be as they are. There are things out there that can't be explained, and people look everywhere for answers; religion, science, whatever, yet they end up "finding out there ain't no answers to find." You just gotta accept that there are things in this world that are beyond you and that you can't define everything there is.

At least, that's how I take it.

The Dead Weather – I Cut Like a Buffalo Lyrics 14 years ago
The line is definitely "you know I look like a women." Jack said that himself in a Spin interview I think. It is entirely possible this is sexual in nature, but the way Jack talked about it, it seems like its got a more serious meaning to it. He has said this is his favorite song he ever wrote. It could have a ton of meanings.

Whatever it is, I would love to sit down with Jack and talk about it. He seems like a really cool and funny guy. (watch the interview with the dead weather on youtube. hilarious.)

Phoenix – Lisztomania Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this song. I'm thinking its about dealing with fame and handling the constant changing public interest. Lisztomania means how popular Franz Liszt was, and how there would be women screaming at his shows, which is pretty impressive, considering he was a classical composer. Thats an interesting scene to imagine. Him on stage in some classical opera house, with women in classical dresses screaming like a 13 year old girl at a Beatles concert.

They are basically using that as there example of the ultimate fame and fan adoration. The chorus is talking about how fame can grow very quickly, and fade very quickly, and you have to know how to deal with both. The verses seem to be about someone gaining fame, then looking back when he loses it and wondering if it could have been different and feeling very sorry for himself.

The Moody Blues – Nights In White Satin Lyrics 15 years ago
On a literal level I feel like this song is about a man in a relationship that has fallen in love with another woman and trying to figure out what to do about the relationship is in. Hence the "letters I've written, never meaning to send." He's trying to break up with her but can't bring himself to do it.

On a slightly deeper level, I agree with the whole album as a day in the life of an average man as an extended metaphor for life, with this being the death, looking back and regretting not doing more, and falling into the mundane routine and loneliness of modern working and middle class. Also, it signifies the regret of not finding simple joys in life and working and working all the time. "Bedsitter people look back in lament, another days useless energy spent."

At its deepest level, I feel that its really about the realization of true beauty in life, and finding true happiness above the superficial joys that we are supposed to live for. This realization confuses or even scares the speaker. This is evident in the lines "Beauty I've always missed, with these eyes right before" and "Just what the truth is, I can't say anymore."

At a fairly shallow level, I think this is THE trippiest song ever written. The orchestral parts and the otherworldly background singing make this song ALMOST frightening. But its also somehow soothing. I don't recommend doing... illegal things, but if you do, I recommend turning out the lights, closing your eyes, and listening to this song. Then listen to "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane. He he.

The Dead Weather – I Cut Like a Buffalo Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song, and I really can't wait for the album. Jack White is my freakin hero.

Anyway, about this song, I think it is about being taken seriously. Like, even though he seems almost like a joke, he "cuts like a buffalo," as in he is a force to be reckoned with. This is evident in lines such as "I look like a women but I, cut like a buffalo," and "Don't take it easy on me, I'll never take it easy."

Also, That even when he is being non-serious he is taken seriously. "You know I treat you like a joke, but you don't know when I'm jokin'."

This could be completely wrong, or only part of what it means, but thats what I take from it. Jack White himself said that he loved this song but was afraid to listen to it at the same time, because he was being so honest with himself in this song. I really don't know what he means by that.

Also, I don't get the line, "You cut a record on my throat, but the records not broken." Jack said this summed up everything he is artistically, but I don't get it at all.

The Dead Weather – Treat Me Like Your Mother Lyrics 15 years ago
I like how a this and "hang you from the heavens" both just sound like songs of hate and contempt between Jack White and Alison Mosshart. Both of these songs straight up frighten me.

Specifically it sounds like a girl that learned how to manipulate the guy: dress like, act like, and make reference to his mother. He can't lie or disrespect his mother, so when the girl acts like his mother, she can pretty much get him to do whatever she wants.

However, the guy has the girl figured out too. "you blink when you breath and you breath when you lie. You blink when you lie." So basically its just this standoff of two people who may or not be in a relationship that both know just how to manipulate the other. And neither of them are backing down.

Thats a pretty messed up concept.

MGMT – The Youth Lyrics 15 years ago
MGMT is calling the youth to a revolution. They want the world to be a place where everyone can get along and you can just be happy and "live and love and sleep together." The youth is changing. We are slowly breaking out of the brainwashing of what we are and how we should act. We are beginning to reach this point. No generation of youth has been this open minded and free thinking before. We are almost ready for a change. But we are not quite there yet. "are you starting to change?" He's asking you if your ready for change.

The "boos to cheers" line (no, its definitely not booze to tears) is saying how not long ago, the youth was not open to things they weren't used to (their music.) But now we are starting to break free of the norm and accepting things as weird as MGMT's music. This shows we are ready for the change, but the "parents" can't do it for us. This is our revolution.

These guys are so cool. They may be way too ambitious calling for a full on revolution, but the direction they are going in is incredible. Yeah they're hippies, but they're modern hippies. They probably need a new title, because "modern hippies" doesn't really roll off the tongue.

John Lennon – God Lyrics 15 years ago
I remember him talking about this in some interview... He said about the first line, something like, "the more a person hurts, the more they reach out to God." It seems like another way of putting it is that God is a human creation, and that it is almost a personification of ones conscience.

He seems to be denouncing all the things that others (and probably he himself) believed in and looked up to, and literally says he only believes in himself, and Yoko. You can't view all these things as having control of your life. You are in control, and no one, not even the apparently almighty God, can change that.

About the line, "The dream is over." He said in an interview that this was saying that the dreams the sixties were over. "So flower power didn't work, that doesn't mean there can't still be peace." He knew that the hippy movements had failed, but instead of giving up on peace and love, he said they just had to try again in a different way.

Manchester Orchestra – I Can Feel a Hot One Lyrics 15 years ago
I know that Andy wrote this about a breakdown he had in their van on tour, but it seems to me like it is recounting memories he has with someone. The last few verses, however seem like they are talking about how this persons life ended.
The line "and I could tell it was over, from the curtains that hung from your neck." seems like it could either mean she hung herself, or he is using curtains to mean the nice clothes that are put on a person for their funeral. He says, "and i realized then you were perfect" which may be a realization he had at the funeral. Then, later he had some sort of accident (possibly a drunken car crash?), hence the "to pray what I thought were angels, ended up being ambulences." While he is knocked out or dazed, he has a vision of his unborn child crying in its mothers womb.

Very powerful stuff.

Once again though, this is just what the song means to me. Its obviously very personal to Andy Hull, but he leaves it fairly open ended for the listener to let it mean anything they want it to, which is very mature writing, especially compared to some of his earlier stuff (wolves at night, etc.) which I live, but its not nearly as emotionally mature as this.

Manchester Orchestra – Shake It Out Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is so great, and so powerful. The ending has the most force of any song I have heard in a while.

As for the meaning, Its definitely about religion, and has three parts.
The first part is about the things he has done in his life and how he is trying to reach out to the lord again after losing touch. When it says "I felt the lord in my fathers house" it shows that he had so much faith as a young kid, but has become corrupted and has drifted away from the lord.

In the second part he has a revelation "we bled it out/ over the floor of the neighbors house... I've never seen a thing so complete." This causes him to begin to come back around to God and thinks he can cure all his pain and problems.

The third part during the slow section, he see's how the lord can take away your sins "I felt the lord begin/ to peel off all my skin." However, after he has done this he realizes his problems are deeper than just the problems in his life, but are actually problems within himself that only he can fix "reveal the bigger mess/ that you cant fix."

Many of Andy's songs deal with his religious upbringing, but I feel like in this song he really takes it head on and that takes a great deal of maturity. Absolutely love this song.

Manchester Orchestra – I've Got Friends Lyrics 15 years ago
I kinda see it as him trying to live up to the high expectations he has and how he has friends in good places, but they may not really have his best intentions at heart, and just want to use him for his talent or whatever else.

"I know what they want, and I know they don't want me to stay" kinda sounds like they just want to use him and not help him or spend time with him.

Whatever it means, this song seriously rocks hard. I think its safe to say this song could become very popular very quickly.

Tim Fite – Big Mistake Lyrics 15 years ago
To me, this is a song about mistakes you make in life, and forgiveness. "Tell me a dirty joke, and I'll laugh it off lightly, if I tell you a dirty joke you might not like me." is saying that you shouldn't let petty things come between you and just to forgive and move on. Also, I think it is saying that even if someone makes a huge mistake, if you love them, you should forgive them becuase its not worth it to lose someone over one mistake.
