Frightened Rabbit – Acts of Man Lyrics | 11 years ago |
"knight in shitty armor" might be the funniest line Scott's ever written I lol every time |
Guns N' Roses – My World Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Wouldn't mind a whole album from Axl like this. |
Sarah McLachlan – Building A Mystery Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The goal is to be a poet, and a carpenter. To be one who loves, to be one who works. -311 Yeah he's an eccentric, seemingly aloof artist (her drummer/husband), but deep down beyond the facade, he's a salt of the earth blue collar man's man...putting in work, to keep Sarah interested and attracted. He's "building a mystery" FOR HER...and she is loving it. |
Silversun Pickups – It's Nice to Know You Work Alone Lyrics | 13 years ago |
It's about the girl you love confessing to engaging in prostitution. "It's nice to know you work alone" - a sarcastic consolation, in light of the crushing truth. Every cloud has a silver lining... |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Muzzle Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Billy relating to the alienated youth, not as a rock star on a pedestal, but as ordinary as everyone. He knew what we were going through, because he lived a life of it. That's why we loved him. "the world, so hard to understand...the world your can't live without...". Chokes me up every time. |
Frightened Rabbit – Fast Blood Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"good night it's stroke-time let's get paralysed" Triple entendre here; 1. masturbation before going to sleep 2. stunning kiss at the stroke of midnight 3. drunkeness |
Frightened Rabbit – The Wrestle Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Mostly about sex. A key line is; "this is the test I, left land for" Continuing with the ocean as a metaphor for healing theme present throughout the entire record, facing up to the primal act of sex becomes another pit stop challenge, along the journey to recovery, after the epic loss detailed on "Midnight Organ Fight". |
The National – Brainy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"everything you say has water under it" I believe he is referring to 'water under the bridge'...there's a history with this woman. |
Frightened Rabbit – The Modern Leper Lyrics | 14 years ago |
He is addressing us, the listener, directly; "A cripple walks amongst you" By 'you', he is talking to us, the fans. Calling us out. For somehow loving this depressing, morbid indie rock character. To us, it's all just entertainment. But for him, this is no character act. It's real, genuine human suffering. So, his observation is legitimate; "You must be a masochist to love a modern leper". By 'modern', he is refering to the depressing, indie asthetic/character which is quite fashionable these days. |
Tori Amos – Silent All These Years Lyrics | 14 years ago |
It's her "confession" to her lover about her rape. She's nervous to tell him, because she doesn't know how he will react. But he has baggage too. They may have an inappropriate relationship. She might be the "other woman", etc. Ultimately, she finds the voice/strength to confide her secret in him by the last verse, and in "taking hold of her hand", he accepts her for it. He's no angel himself, but it doesn't matter. She's still his mermaid. Fucking beautiful. |
Orgy – Social Enemies Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Jay is calling out the conservative talking heads, republican radio loudmouths, and other self righteous saviors who blast gays, stoners, and anyone different that chooses an alternative lifestyle. |
Orgy – Social Enemies Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Sounds inspired by mormons or born again's coming to his house and trying to save him. Clearly Jay wants no part of it. |
David Bowie – Bring Me the Disco King Lyrics | 14 years ago |
THE DEVIL: "Yessss my minions....today, I have a sepeeciaaal assignment for you....surely, he is a sinner...surely, he is one of usssss....bring me the disco king!" And with that, the undead ghost reapers of death scramble up to the mortal realm...and make their rightful claim...to David Bowie's last breath. |
David Bowie – Kooks Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song will be playing, if and when I ever have a family of my own. |
David Bowie – Station to Station Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I appreciate that in-depth analysis, JourdainB. Regarding "The European 'canon'"; I'm quite sure Bowie is referring to the record itself (Station to Station), as the latest phase of his musical evolution. The Thin White Duke aesthetic is decidedly "European" (white, sophisticated, and cold). Thus, his "European Canon" (latest body of work) is presented here, for your listening pleasure. |
David Bowie – Win Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I guess I'll take a stab at this one... I think it's about sexual negotiation. "Since you're trying not to lose Since I'm not supposed to grin" It's like Bowie knows she's attracted to him, but he can't show it, so he has to slow down, and play the "game" a bit more first. "slow down, let someone love you" |
David Bowie – Wild Is the Wind Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This one brings the drama. Semi crushed to hear Bowie did not write it...it sounds like he could have. Thematically, it fits the Thin White Duke perfectly. He sang songs of love, yet had no real feelings of his own. His performance makes you feel the emptiness behind such words. |
David Bowie – Reality Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"tragic youth was going down on me" He's getting older |
David Bowie – Reality Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Another personal reflection. "Tragic youth was looking young and sexy The tragic youth was wearing tattered black jeans Bearing arms and flaunting all her mischief Then tragic youth was going down on me" This 1st verse sets up the image of youthful innocence. It only sounds like a blowjob from a crazed fan, but it doubles as Bowie talking about himself and his own youthful naievity. I build a wall of sound to separate us (rock star status) I hid amog the junk of wretched highs (cocaine) I sped from planet X to planet Alpha (ziggy to today) Struggling for reality (still trying to find himself) |
David Bowie – Rock 'n' Roll with Me Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Bowie's love letter, to all his true blue fans in the audience. |
David Bowie – Fall Dog Bombs the Moon Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Hope little girl Come blow me away "Look sweetheart, I'm David Bowie. I'm much older than you, and I've had every kind of woman every way imaginable...but go ahead, give me your best shot" I don't care much I'll win anyway Just a dog "yeah, yeah, heard it all before...you'll still be in my bed tonight" I'm god damn rich An exploding man (Bowie could be worth as much as $500 million dollars) When I talk in the night There's oil in my hands What a dog "They actually pay me for this...to sing. Crazy, I know" (CHORUS) Fall dog is cruel and smart Smart time breaks the heart Fall dog bombs the moon A devil in the marketplace A devil in your bleeding face Fall dog bombs the moon (What a dog) "You see, I'm the kid they made fun of. The one who took the blame in the media. Who has the last laugh now, bitches?" There's always a moron Someone to hate A corporate tie A wig and a date Just a dog "you put me on this pedestal, but I'm really no better a person than any other type" These blackest of years That have no sound No shape, no depth No underground What a dog "Just bitterness remains. I'm not part of your little scene. Just a dirty old man, little girl." |
David Bowie – Life on Mars? Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"Life On Mars" is Bowie's early career commentary on dreams of fame, amidst an unforgiving world, illustrated through a failed relationship to his then actress girlfriend. The "girl with the mousy hair" was an old flame of Bowie's. For her, it was just a "god awful small afair", but for Bowie, she was his world at the time. The relationship went wrong due to her own quest for fame, as well as pressure from her family to leave him ("her mummy is yelling "no!"). Bowie next (wishfully) imagines her single and lonely, still dreaming of fame on the silver screen. But Bowie thinks it's all bullshit ("the film is a saddened bore") "for she's lived it 10 times or more" (pattern of behavior on her part, short term relationships, failed auditions). Delving deeper into her character, she holds contempt for those who don't support her dream ("she could spit in the eyes of fools") as they ask her to focus on real life stuff, but to her, they're low class sailors and cavemen, simply there for her amusement. The irony is of course, how Bowie cleverly connects that she herself is also a contributor to the human condition she seeks to escape through her movie dream. "Is there life on Mars?" (A place where perhaps Bowie could stop the bitter heartbreak, for her to figuratively "get lost" on, and human nature in general to possibly get it right for a change.) "The workers have struck for fame" (who wants to do boring work when the life of a star is so much more enticing?) "cause Lennons on sale again" (John Lennon, friend of Bowie, who came from a working class background, and achieved super stardom.) The second verse expands upon the bullshit siren song of fame that appeals to people, ("see the mice in their million hordes"), and confesses it's not just isolated to America, or social class, "from Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads". Ironic how after such a thrashing of those who dream for fame, Bowie went on to become one of the most famous people in world. |
David Bowie – Watch That Man Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"Watch That Man" was inspired by a wild New York hotel party during the first US Ziggy tour, and "Vile Bodies" by Evelyn Waugh "; a book Bowie was reading at the time about fickle aristocratic socialites suddenly faced with apocalypse. The narrative is told through the eyes of our blase' party participant (Bowie), for whom even the most outrageous stuff is "so-so". Eventually, he begins to realize the rediculousness of his scene, and signs of the impending catastrophe, albeit through hazy, substance induced visions. "Shakey" (who is either Bowie, Defries, or some other person in charge, I can't tell...), is making sure everyone is having a good time, and probably coked up (has the shakes, twitchy, etc). "Watch that man!" is what people at the party are whispering about Bowie..."He talks like a jerk" (Bowie is known for his aloof, distant manner) "but he could eat you with a fork and spoon" (he IS kind of the mack daddy of the universe...) "I was shaking like a leaf" (effects of the coke, and fear of the impending apocalypse), "but I couldn't understand the conversation" (effects of the coke, and final disassociation from the nonsense these shallow people are still concerned with) "I ran to the street, looking for information" (Is this really the end of the world? I'm outta here!) Personally, I listen to this song any time before picking up girls, or getting ready to party ;) |
David Bowie – Moonage Daydream Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"I'm the space invader" = butt sex. |
David Bowie – Moonage Daydream Lyrics | 15 years ago |
it's about gay sex. "'lectric eye"?, "ray gun to my head"? Yup...singing about penis. "Keep your mouth shut, you're squawking like a pink monkey bird" Yeah, butt sex will do that. |
